Maldives resort deals that cost more once compulsory transfers are added

You have found a resort deal that looks cheaper than the others, and you want to know if it still is once the transfer is added.

Quick answer

A cheaper resort rate only wins if the saving beats the extra transfer cost. Over four nights for two adults, a seaplane resort needs to be about USD 175 a night cheaper before tax than a speedboat resort charging USD 150 return per person, just to break even. In our worked example, a USD 450 seaplane resort ends up about RM1,575 more per couple than a USD 550 speedboat resort.

Why the cheapest room rate can be the dearest trip

Resort transfers are charged per person, return, and are often compulsory. A seaplane can cost more per couple than two or three nights of room rate, so a low headline rate can hide a higher total.

Room rates are usually quoted per room per night before tax. Transfers sit on a different line, sometimes on a different page. That is why deals look cheaper than they are. For the full picture of trip costs, see the Budget and Real Cost hub and our guide to airport to resort transfer charges.

Worked example: the cheaper rate that costs more

Two adults, four nights, prices before meals, at RM4.09 per USD. Room rates are realistic market figures, and transfers come from published ranges checked on 12 October 2026.

Resort X, seaplaneResort Y, speedboat
Room rate per nightUSD 450USD 550
With 10% service and 17% GSTUSD 579.15USD 707.85
Four nightsUSD 2,316.60USD 2,831.40
Green Tax (USD 12 x 2 x 4)USD 96USD 96
Transfer, 2 adults returnUSD 1,200 (USD 600 each)USD 300 (USD 150 each)
Total per coupleUSD 3,612.60, about RM14,775USD 3,227.40, about RM13,200

Resort X advertises a room USD 100 a night cheaper. After the transfer, it costs about RM1,575 more per couple. If its transfer is quoted plus tax, the gap grows further.

The break-even rule

Here is a quick test for any two deals. Take the difference in return transfer cost for your whole party, then divide by the number of nights times 1.287.

Break-even room saving per night = transfer gap / (nights x 1.287)

In the example, the transfer gap is USD 900. Over four nights that is 900 / 5.148, about USD 175 a night. Resort X would need to be at least USD 175 cheaper per night to match Resort Y, not USD 100.

The same rule works for domestic flight resorts. A USD 450 per person domestic flight and boat against a USD 150 speedboat is a USD 600 gap for a couple, so about USD 117 a night over four nights.

Deals most likely to flip

  • Short stays. Three nights spreads the transfer over fewer nights, so the break-even saving rises to about USD 233 a night on a USD 900 gap.
  • Far atolls on promotion. Resorts reached only by seaplane or domestic flight often run lower room rates to offset the journey.
  • "Free night" offers. A free night lowers the room bill but the transfer stays the same. See why a cheaper island can need a more expensive transfer.
  • Room-only rates. Isolated resorts also leave you no choice of restaurant, so meals add on top.

Packages from Malaysian agencies often include the transfer, which makes them easier to compare. Always check the inclusion line. Our page on whether airport transfers are included in resort rates shows what to look for.

How to compare two deals in five minutes

You only need four numbers for each resort: the room rate, the number of nights, the transfer price per person and whether tax is added.

  1. Multiply the room rate by 1.287 and by your nights.
  2. Add Green Tax at USD 12 per guest per night.
  3. Add the return transfer for every traveller, adjusting for children.
  4. Convert the total at RM4.09 and compare.

If one resort includes meals and the other does not, add a meal allowance before deciding. The trip cost calculator does the same steps for you.

Hidden transfer costs beyond the fare

The fare is not the only transfer cost. Add these when you compare.

  • Excess baggage. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage and charges USD 5 per kg over that.
  • A missed cut-off. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so landing in Male after about 15:30 means a night near the airport, often at your own cost.
  • Tax on the transfer if it is quoted "++".

Who should run this check

Every couple comparing resort deals should, especially honeymooners chasing an overwater villa at the lowest rate. Families gain a little from child transfer discounts, but should still run the numbers.

If you already know you want a seaplane arrival for the experience, the extra cost may be worth it, and that is a fair choice. For couples weighing that experience, read why cheap seaplane resort rates can mislead, then test both options in the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Can I skip the resort transfer and arrange my own boat?
Usually not for resorts. Most resorts require guests to use their own seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight arrangement, which is why the transfer is called compulsory. Local islands are different, with public ferries and shared speedboats. Confirm the resort's transfer policy in writing before you pay.
Are children charged the full transfer price?
Usually not. Children aged 2 to 11 typically pay 30 to 40% less than adults on resort transfers, and infants under 2 are usually free. A family of four therefore feels transfer costs less sharply per head than two adults, but the total is still large.
Do transfer prices include tax?
It depends on how the resort quotes. Many resorts quote transfers with service charge and GST to be added, shown as "++". Ask whether the figure is net or plus tax, as 28.7% on a USD 600 seaplane adds about USD 172 per person.
Does a longer stay change the answer?
Yes. The transfer is paid once, so its weight per night falls as you stay longer. A USD 900 transfer gap needs a room saving of about USD 175 a night over four nights, but only about USD 100 a night over seven nights.
