Maldives speedboat travel with toddlers and small children

A speedboat is the most common way to reach a Maldives island, and with a toddler the length of the ride matters more than the price.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Most families with toddlers manage Maldives speedboats well when the ride is short, around 20 to 45 minutes, and timed for calm morning water. Choose a resort or island close to Male, ask the operator for child-size life jackets, sit low and central, and pack a small bag with snacks, water and a change of clothes. Avoid long boat legs on the arrival day.

Can toddlers do Maldives speedboats?

Yes, most do, and many enjoy them. The things that make a difference are the length of the ride, the sea state and how tired the child already is after the flight.

A 20 to 45 minute crossing in calm water is easy for most families. A 90 minute crossing in afternoon wind after a four-hour flight is a different trip.

Choose the island by boat time first

The easiest fix is choosing a resort or local island with a short transfer. Resorts and islands in North and South Male atolls are typically reached in about 20 to 75 minutes, depending on distance.

Ask every shortlisted resort for its typical crossing time, not its distance. Then rank them with a simple rule.

These bands are our planning guidance for families, not operator rules.

Time the crossing for calmer water

Morning crossings are usually calmer, and daylight helps everyone. From Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25, which puts most family transfers around midday.

The Batik Air flight landing about 21:55 means a night crossing for most speedboat resorts, with a tired child. Many families find a night in Hulhumale and a morning boat far easier.

Our flight arrival planner checks whether your landing time leaves a comfortable buffer. Use a longer buffer of 75 to 90 minutes with children.

Life jackets and safety

Ask the resort or boat operator in writing whether they carry life jackets in your child's size. Child sizes are common, but infant sizes are not always on board.

Keep toddlers on a lap or tucked beside a parent on the bench, away from open sides and the stern. Hold them firmly when the boat accelerates or crosses wake from other boats.

Boarding is the moment most care is needed. Hand the child to your partner or a crew member across the gap rather than stepping across with them.

Where to sit

Sit low and towards the middle of the boat, where motion is gentlest. The NHS gives the same advice for adults who feel motion sick: sit in the middle of a boat and look at a fixed point such as the horizon.

Covered seating keeps sun and spray off small children. Shared resort boats are usually covered, but some guesthouse speedboats have open sections. Ask before you go.

Packing checklist for the boat bag

Keep one small bag within reach, separate from the main luggage.

  • Water and simple snacks such as crackers, which can help a queasy stomach.
  • A full change of clothes for the child, plus a light top for a parent.
  • Hat and child sunscreen.
  • Nappies, wipes and a plastic bag for anything wet.
  • A favourite toy or a downloaded show for distraction.
  • Any medicines your doctor or pharmacist has advised.

What it costs for a family

Speedboat transfers are usually priced per person. A shared speedboat to Maafushi is listed at USD 25 per person one way on maafushi.com (checked 11 Oct 2026).

For two adults and a three-year-old, a return trip on that route costs about USD 150 if the child pays full fare. That is about RM614 at RM4.09 per USD. Resorts often charge children less than adults, so ask for a child rate.

When a different choice works better

If every shortlisted resort is more than an hour away by speedboat, compare a seaplane or a domestic flight. Both are shorter on the water, though they add waiting and baggage rules.

If your child gets badly motion sick in cars, choose the shortest transfer available and keep the first day light. For families with an infant and a teenager, the compromises are covered in our family pages.

Questions travellers ask

Do resorts provide infant life jackets?
Many resort boats carry child life jackets, but infant sizes are less common. Ask the resort or boat operator in writing which sizes they have. Some families bring their own infant flotation vest from Malaysia for peace of mind, since fit matters more than brand.
Can I use a car seat or stroller on the boat?
Car seats cannot be fixed to speedboat seats, so children sit on a lap or a bench. Strollers go with the luggage. A soft baby carrier is often easier than a stroller on jetties and boats, and on sandy resort paths afterwards.
Are speedboats ever suspended for weather?
Yes, on rough days operators may delay or cancel crossings, especially in the southwest monsoon from about May to November. Resorts manage this for their guests. With a toddler, a short wait in the airport lounge is far better than a rough crossing, so accept the delay if offered.
Do children pay for speedboat transfers?
Usually yes, at a reduced rate. Third-party guides suggest children aged 2 to 11 often pay around 30% to 40% less than adults for resort transfers, and infants under two are often free. Ask each resort for its exact child and infant rates.
