Public ferry travel in Maldives: how to plan around schedules

The public ferry is the cheapest way to reach a local island, provided the trip is planned around the ferry rather than the other way round.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Government public ferries are very cheap (roughly USD 2 to 3 per person on short routes) but slow, infrequent and generally not running on Fridays. Timetables change and are not reliably published online, so build your trip around confirmed ferry days, keep a speedboat fallback, and never rely on a ferry on the day you fly home.

The short answer on ferries

Public ferries are the cheapest way between Male and nearby local islands, but they suit flexible travellers on middle days of a trip, not arrival or departure days.

Fares on short routes are a few US dollars per person, according to third-party guides. The trade-off is fewer departures, longer journeys and no service on most routes on Fridays.

This page explains how to plan around that. For the choice between ferry and speedboat on a specific trip, see local island speedboat or public ferry. All transfer pages sit in the transfers hub.

Why ferry times are hard to pin down

There is no single reliable online timetable for every route. Third-party guides point to the government operator MTCC as the main source, but even travellers comparing the operator's site with hotel sites have found conflicting times.

Schedules also change with holidays. MTCC adjusted Greater Male services for Eid in 2026, as local news reported.

For that reason, this page gives no ferry times. Any time you see quoted online should be confirmed with your guesthouse and, ideally, at the terminal the day before.

A four-step planning method

This method works for any ferry route. It starts with the ferry and fits the rest of the trip around it.

  1. Ask your guesthouse which days the ferry runs on your route, the departure time and the terminal. Ask for the answer in writing.
  2. Mark Fridays and any public holidays in your dates as no-ferry days.
  3. Use a shared speedboat for the arrival and departure legs, which connect to your flights.
  4. Put ferry legs only on middle days, such as moving between two local islands, with a spare day after.

The spare day matters. If the ferry does not run or is full, you can take it the next day or switch to a speedboat without missing anything.

A worked example: Maafushi trip with a ferry day

Here is how the method looks for a five-night trip from Kuala Lumpur, landing on the AirAsia morning flight. Day labels are an example only, not a timetable.

DayLegTransportWhy
Day 1 (Saturday)Airport to MaafushiShared speedboat, about USD 25 one wayConnects to the flight
Days 2 to 4Stay on MaafushiNoneExcursions from the island
Day 5 (Wednesday)Maafushi to Male for a day outPublic ferry, if runningMiddle day, cheap, flexible
Day 6 (Thursday)Maafushi to airportShared speedboatConnects to the flight home

The shared speedboat fare is from maafushi.com, which lists USD 25 per person one way and asks guests to book in advance (checked 11 Oct 2026). Two adults taking it both ways spend about USD 100, roughly RM409 at RM4.09 per USD.

Using the ferry for both airport legs would save most of that, but risks a lost day if the ferry does not run. Most couples on a short trip judge the speedboat worth it.

Fridays and holidays

Friday is the main weekly day of rest in the Maldives. Third-party guides agree that public ferries to local islands generally do not run on Fridays.

Shared speedboats usually still run on Fridays, often with fewer departures. If you land on a Friday, confirm your speedboat time with the guesthouse before booking flights.

During Ramadan and around Eid, check again closer to the date. Our page on Friday ferry services lists the questions to ask.

Journey times and comfort

Ferries are slower than speedboats. Third-party guides put Male to Maafushi at about 90 minutes to two hours by ferry, compared with well under an hour by speedboat.

The boats are larger and can feel steadier in a swell, but they are open to spray and have basic seating. Bring water, a hat and something to keep phones dry.

Who the ferry suits, and who should skip it

The ferry suits backpackers, budget couples and travellers staying a week or more who enjoy local life. It is a good way to see how Maldivians travel.

It suits families with toddlers, older travellers and anyone with heavy bags less well. Two hours on a working boat with limited seating is a lot to ask of small children.

It suits short trips least. On a four-night stay, a missed or cancelled ferry costs a quarter of the holiday. If you are deciding what to do when a ferry falls through, read what happens when the public ferry does not run.

Questions travellers ask

Can I book public ferry tickets online?
Generally not. Third-party guides say tickets are bought in person at the terminal or on board, in local currency or sometimes US dollars. Arrive early, because seats are first come, first served. Your guesthouse can tell you the current practice for its route.
Which terminal does my ferry leave from?
That depends on the route, and Male's ferry terminals have been reorganised in recent years. Some atoll ferries have moved between Male and Hulhumale terminals. Ask your guesthouse to name the terminal and confirm it the day before you travel.
Do public ferries run during Ramadan and Eid?
Services often change around public holidays and Ramadan, sometimes with reduced or rearranged timings. Local news reports MTCC schedule changes for Eid, for example. Check with your guesthouse a week before and again the day before if your trip overlaps a holiday.
Is the public ferry safe with luggage?
Ferries are working boats that carry locals, goods and luggage. A medium suitcase is normally fine, but space is limited and there may be steps or a gap to cross at the jetty. Travel light, and read our page on ferries with large luggage if you have several bags.
