Maldives trip cost if one traveller cannot share a twin room

Someone in your group needs their own room, and you want to know what that really adds before you agree how to split the bill.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

A traveller who cannot share pays for the whole room, while taxes per person, transfers and flights stay the same. On a 3-night stay that adds about RM790 at a USD 100 ++ guesthouse room and about RM2,370 at a USD 300 ++ resort room, compared with twin sharing. In a group of three, a triple room, where the property offers one, is usually far cheaper than a twin plus a single.

Key facts

What changes when one traveller cannot share

The room cost no longer splits in two. One person carries the full nightly rate, plus the service charge and GST on it.

Everything charged per person stays the same: Green Tax, speedboat or seaplane seats, flights, and most meal plans. So the extra cost is mainly the other half of a room. Read how per person twin sharing prices work first if you are converting a package price, and see the Budget and Real Cost hub for the full picture.

There are many good reasons to need a room alone: snoring, a different schedule, a parent travelling with adult children, colleagues on a company trip, or simply a friend group with an odd number.

Worked example: twin share versus single, 3 nights

These examples use room rates within the third-party ranges published by holiday.com.mv (checked 11 October 2026): USD 60 to 180 for a local guesthouse double and USD 300 to 550 for a four-star resort room. Taxes add about 28.7%. RM4.09 per USD.

Transfers and flights are left out because they do not change. Add, for example, USD 50 for return Maafushi speedboat seats and about RM1,155 for a return KUL to MLE fare, to both columns equally.

Groups of three: twin plus single or a triple room

An odd number is the most common reason someone ends up alone. Before accepting a twin plus a single, ask about a triple room.

Here is a group of three friends at a guesthouse for 3 nights, all costs shared evenly. The triple room rate is an illustration only; ask the property for its real rate.

Set-upRoomsRoom plus taxesGreen Tax (3 guests)Each pays
Twin plus single, USD 100 rooms2USD 772.20USD 54USD 275.40 (RM1,126)
One triple room at USD 130 (example)1USD 501.93USD 54USD 185.31 (RM758)

The triple saves about RM368 each. The trade-off is space and privacy, and many resort water villas cap occupancy at two adults, so triples are easier on local islands and in beach villas.

At packages, look for an "extra adult" or "extra bed" rate. AF Travel's Le Meridien Thilamaafushi package, checked 12 October 2026, lists an extra adult bed price alongside the twin share price.

Fair ways to split the extra cost

Agree this before anyone pays a deposit. Three common approaches:

  1. The solo traveller pays the extra. Fair when the choice is personal, such as wanting privacy.
  2. The group shares the extra evenly. Fair when the odd number is nobody's choice, as with three friends.
  3. Rotate. On a longer trip, people take turns in the single room and split all room costs evenly.

Whatever you choose, put the per person total in your group chat so nobody is surprised at the balance stage.

What to ask when you request a quote

Agencies price twin sharing by default, so the single room needs its own request. Ask these questions in one message to save time.

  • What is the single occupancy price per night, and is it nett or ++?
  • Is there a published single supplement on the package, or is it quoted case by case?
  • Does the room come in a triple or family configuration, and what is the maximum occupancy?
  • Are the extra adult and child rates different from the twin share rate?
  • Do transfers stay per person, or is any boat priced per room or per trip?

The last question matters for private speedboats. A boat priced per trip costs the same for one or two people, so a solo traveller carries the whole fare unless the group shares a boat.

Also ask how the meal plan is priced. Half board or full board is usually per person, so it does not double, but some packages bundle meals into a per room price.

Who this affects most, and alternatives

Solo travellers pay the full room on every trip, so a local island guesthouse keeps the gap smallest. At resorts, the single supplement is large enough to rethink the trip length.

Families with one adult child, friend groups of three or five, and company trips with mixed genders feel it most. For travellers going entirely solo, see our page on the single supplement for solo travellers. For extra beds and children, read charges for children and extra beds, then run your own split in the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Is a single room cheaper than a double room in the Maldives?
Rarely by much. Most Maldives resorts and many guesthouses price the room, not the number of guests, so a solo traveller pays close to the full double rate. Some guesthouses publish a lower single rate. Ask for the single occupancy price, not the twin share price, when you enquire.
Can a package be booked for one person at the twin share price?
Usually not. Packages marked "minimum 2 persons", like several Malaysian honeymoon packages checked in October 2026, apply their per person price only to two people sharing. A solo booking gets a separate, higher single rate, which you should ask for in writing.
What if the person who needs a single room is a parent travelling with grown children?
Families often split the extra evenly as a group cost rather than charging one person. Another option is a family room or two-bedroom villa, which can cost less than two separate rooms. Ask about room maximum occupancy before booking, since overwater villas often cannot take extra guests.
Does a single traveller pay more Green Tax?
No. Green Tax is charged per guest per night, so a solo traveller pays the same USD 12 or USD 6 per night as anyone sharing. The extra cost of travelling alone comes almost entirely from the room and the taxes on the room.
