Why flight days matter more than you think

With the Maldives, you choose the dates first and the airline second. Three airlines fly every day, so a Friday departure after work is realistic.

With Mauritius, the flight days fix your trip. Around three nonstop departures a week means your nights are set by the timetable, and a missed connection is harder to recover.

The longer flight also costs a day each way in practice. On a 5-night trip that is a large share of your leave.

Holiday style: villa time or island time

The Maldives is built around the resort. You wake up over the water, snorkel the house reef and eat at the resort's restaurants.

Mauritius is built around the island. Couples spend days driving to viewpoints, waterfalls, markets and different beaches, then return to a hotel.

Neither is better. Ask yourselves whether you want to stay put or go out each day.

What the Maldives villa costs, worked out

Example: a standard overwater villa at USD 1,000 per night before tax, 4 nights, two adults.

1. Room: USD 1,000 × 4 = USD 4,000.
2. Service charge and TGST add about 28.7%: about USD 5,148.
3. Green Tax: USD 12 × 2 × 4 = USD 96.
4. Total: about USD 5,244, or about RM21,448 at RM4.09, before meals, transfers and flights.

Timing the trip around Malaysian leave

The Maldives is driest from about December to April, during the northeast monsoon. The wetter southwest monsoon runs from about May to November, with showers that often pass quickly and lower resort rates.

Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons run the other way. Its cooler, drier months fall in the middle of the year, which can suit couples travelling around the Malaysian mid-year break.

Check the flight days before you apply for leave. In 2026, the Air Mauritius timetable dropped to two weekly flights in May and June, which can force a 6 or 9 night trip instead of 7.

For the Maldives, the year-end school holiday (5 to 31 December 2026 for most states) pushes up demand. Couples without children often get better villa choice in November or after mid-January.

Paperwork before you fly

For the Maldives, you need a machine-readable passport valid at least one month beyond your stay, a return ticket and a paid booking. Each of you files a free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours of arrival.

For Mauritius, visa guides report visa-free entry for Malaysians, with a passport valid beyond the stay and onward ticket. Confirm current rules with the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office before you book.

• You enjoy driving, hiking and exploring towns.
• You can travel on the Air Mauritius flight days.

Who each destination suits best

The Maldives suits honeymooners on a short break, couples who want privacy, and divers and snorkellers. Budget couples can still go by mixing a guesthouse and a resort, as in a split stay honeymoon.
