Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Choose Dhigurah if you want whale shark chances in South Ari and a long sandbank to wander together. Choose Thoddoo if you prefer a greener, slightly closer island with farms, fresh fruit and a calm beach. A couple's scoring matrix

Give each line a weight from 1 (do not care) to 3 (must have). Multiply by the island's score, then add up. The higher total is your island.

What matters to youYour weight (1 to 3)Dhigurah scoreThoddoo score
Seeing whale sharks...31
Long sandbank walks and photos...32
Shortest boat ride...12
Green, shaded village walks...13
Fresh local fruit...23
Choice of places to eat...21

Scores reflect what sources describe, not our own visits. Example: a couple who weight whale sharks 3, sandbank 2, short boat 1 and others 1 scores Dhigurah 9 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 = 21 and Thoddoo 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 16.

Transfer cost for two, worked out

Return shared speedboats for two adults:

  • Dhigurah: USD 50 to 65 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 260, about RM818 to RM1,063 at RM4.09.
  • Thoddoo: USD 62 × 2 × 2 = USD 248, about RM1,014, at the cheapest listed fare.

Rooms on both sit in the guesthouse band of roughly USD 60 to 180 per night before tax. Five nights of Green Tax for two at USD 6 is USD 60, about RM245, on either island.

Matching flights to boats

AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25. Both usually fit a same-day boat to either island.

Batik Air lands about 21:55, too late for both. Plan a night in Hulhumale and travel the next morning.

For the trip home, Thoddoo's early return boat suits afternoon flights. Dhigurah's departures vary, so ask your guesthouse before you fix flights.

What your days look like

On Dhigurah, a typical stay mixes one or two whale shark trips with SAMPA-certified guides, sandbank walks and lagoon swims. Visit Maldives reports whale sharks year-round in South Ari, most often August to November.

On Thoddoo, days are slower: cycling between farms, swimming at the bikini beach and eating fruit grown on the island. Snorkel trips are arranged through guesthouses.

Food planning differs. See eating on Dhigurah and eating on Thoddoo before choosing a meal plan.

Season, weather and the boat ride

The northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, usually brings calmer seas. That matters more for Dhigurah, where the boat ride is longer and more exposed.

In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, expect more rain and choppier crossings. It is also when South Ari whale shark sightings peak, so Dhigurah couples often accept the trade-off.

If either of you gets seasick, Thoddoo's shorter ride is kinder. The seasickness guide for boat transfers lists what to pack.

Money, dress and daily rules

Both islands run on US dollars and rufiyaa. Small cafes and boat crews may prefer cash, and travel guides report limited ATM access on Thoddoo, so withdraw at Velana airport first.

Cover shoulders and knees in the village on both islands. Swimwear is for the bikini beach, and there is no alcohol. Couples should keep affection low-key in public areas.

Who should choose each

Choose Dhigurah if you are a couple who love the sea, want a shot at whale sharks and do not mind a longer boat ride. It also suits honeymooners adding a resort finish, covered in moving from Dhigurah to a Maldives resort.

Choose Thoddoo if you want quiet, shade and local life, or if one of you dislikes long boat rides. It pairs well with a second North Ari island.

If neither feels lively enough, Maafushi versus Dhigurah compares Dhigurah with the busiest guesthouse island.

Questions travellers ask

Which island is better for a honeymoon on a budget?
Either works if you accept local island rules, which means no alcohol and modest dress away from the bikini beach. Dhigurah's sandbank gives more of the classic Maldives postcard feel. Thoddoo feels more like village life. Many couples add one or two resort nights at the end for a water villa, which keeps the budget well below a full resort week.
Can Muslim couples stay comfortably on both islands?
Yes. Both are inhabited local islands where food is halal by default, mosques are part of daily life and the call to prayer is heard. Ask your guesthouse about prayer times and Friday closures. A dedicated bikini beach keeps swimwear separate from village areas, which many Muslim travellers find comfortable.
Is one island more romantic than the other?
That depends on what you call romantic. Dhigurah offers long walks along a sandbank at sunset. Thoddoo offers cycling past farms and quiet beach evenings. Neither has resort-style private dining as standard, but many guesthouses can arrange a beach dinner if you ask in advance and agree the price.
Can we see whale sharks from Thoddoo?
Thoddoo is in North Ari, outside the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Some operators may offer long day trips south, but they take much of a day and depend on weather. If whale sharks are a priority, staying on Dhigurah or another South Ari island gives you more chances.
