Baa Atoll versus South Ari for manta and whale shark interests

You want a big marine encounter on your Maldives trip and need to know which atoll fits your travel month and budget.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Your travel month decides most of it. From about late June to October, Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay offers some of the best manta snorkelling anywhere, and South Ari whale sharks are also in season. Outside that window, South Ari is the safer pick because whale sharks are seen there year-round. South Ari is also cheaper to reach on a budget, since local islands like Dhigurah are a shared speedboat ride from Male.

Key facts

  • Hanifaru manta season

The verdict by travel month

Pick by month first. From late June to October, both atolls are in season and Baa's Hanifaru Bay is the headline for mantas. From December to April, South Ari is the reliable choice, because whale sharks are present year-round.

This page sits in the comparisons and trade-offs hub. For the species question alone, read manta rays versus whale sharks. Divers should see South Ari diving versus Baa diving.

Transfer cost for two, worked out

Transfers are the biggest cost difference. Using 2026 benchmarks for return trips per adult:

  • South Ari local island by shared speedboat (Dhigurah): USD 50 to 65 one way, so USD 200 to 260 for two return, about RM818 to RM1,063 at RM4.09.
  • Baa by domestic flight plus boat: USD 350 to 520 per adult return, so USD 700 to 1,040 for two, about RM2,863 to RM4,254.
  • Baa by shared seaplane: USD 400 to 820 per adult return, so USD 800 to 1,640 for two, about RM3,272 to RM6,708.

South Ari resorts reached by seaplane cost about the same as Baa resorts to reach. The real saving is the local island route. Run the full trip in the trip cost calculator.

Flight timing from Malaysia

Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so land at Velana by about 15:30 for a same-day seaplane. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals fit; Batik Air (about 21:55) does not.

Domestic flights to Dharavandhoo and South Ari speedboats also run mainly by day. Evening arrivals usually mean a first night in Hulhumale.

What an encounter day looks like

At Hanifaru, guests usually wait for word that mantas are feeding, then go out by boat with a licensed guide. Time in the water is limited and groups take turns, so expect a short, intense swim rather than a long session.

In South Ari, whale shark trips cruise the outer reef while the crew watches for a shadow near the surface. When one is spotted, snorkellers slip in and swim alongside for as long as the shark allows.

Both days involve open water and some waiting on a boat. Beginners should wear a life jacket and tell the guide early.

Responsible encounter basics

Never touch a manta or whale shark, and do not use flash. At Hanifaru, touching and flash photography are not allowed.

Keep at least 3 m from a whale shark's head and body. Choose operators who brief guests before entering the water and limit the number of swimmers around one animal.

Decision rules if you are still torn

  1. If you travel December to May, choose South Ari.
  2. If you travel July to October and mantas excite you most, choose Baa.
  3. If you want a local island guesthouse budget, choose South Ari, where shared speedboats keep transfers low.
  4. If someone in your group cannot swim confidently, choose whichever resort has a calm house reef, and keep the big encounter optional with a life jacket.

Who each atoll suits

Baa suits couples and families with a resort budget who travel in the southwest monsoon and want a once-in-a-lifetime manta experience. The Baa manta-focused itinerary shows how to build the week.

South Ari suits budget travellers, travellers in the drier months, and anyone who wants whale sharks with more flexibility. With eight nights or more in peak months, you can combine both in one holiday, at the cost of an extra transfer via Male.

Questions travellers ask

Can I scuba dive with the mantas at Hanifaru Bay?
No. Hanifaru Bay is snorkel only, and scuba diving inside the bay is banned. Every group must enter with a licensed Hanifaru guide, usually arranged by your resort or guesthouse. Divers can still see mantas at other Baa sites, and our page on diving at Hanifaru explains the current restrictions to verify.
Is a whale shark sighting guaranteed in South Ari?
No. Visit Maldives describes South Ari as having whale sharks year-round, but individual trips can miss them. Staying several nights gives you more than one attempt. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to whale sharks, so ask who runs the trip before paying.
Can I visit Hanifaru from a local island?
Yes, in principle. Dharavandhoo, which has Baa's domestic airport, is the inhabited island closest to Hanifaru, and guesthouses there arrange guided trips in season. Visitor limits and fees apply but change, so ask your guesthouse for current rules and whether it holds the necessary permits.
Are mantas only in Baa?
No. Mantas are seen at cleaning stations in several atolls, including Ari, through the year. What makes Hanifaru special is the seasonal feeding gatherings, which depend on plankton and currents. If you just want a chance to see a manta, many atolls can offer one.
