Omadhoo is a quiet local island in South Ari, the atoll best known for year-round whale sharks. It gets fewer visitors than nearby Dhigurah, which is exactly why some travellers choose it.
This page is the full guide to the island, including transfers, things to do and a sample budget. For the wider area, read the Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll guide, or browse the island directory.
What kind of island is Omadhoo?
Omadhoo is an inhabited island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, about 74 km south-west of Male. It is roughly 950 m long and 300 m wide, and the 2022 census counted about 900 residents.
It has a small village, a school, a health centre, grocery shops and a few local restaurants. A 2026 island guide counts about 17 guesthouses, most of them small.
Who Omadhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
| Traveller | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couples wanting quiet | Strong | Few visitors, calm village |
| Snorkellers | Strong | Long house reef and stingrays at the pier |
| Whale shark hopefuls | Good | Trips to the South Ari area, never guaranteed |
| Muslim travellers | Strong | Muslim community, no alcohol sold |
| Families | Good, with planning | Walkable, but long transfer and basic medical care |
| Short trips of 3 nights or less | Weak | Up to 2 hours each way by boat |
| Evening arrivals | Weak | Shared boats mostly leave in the afternoon |
If you want more choice nearby, compare with the Dhigurah island guide.
Island customs and the bikini beach
Omadhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village and shops, and expect shops to pause at prayer times, especially around Friday midday prayers.
A 2026 island guide places the bikini beach on the western side, with white sand, loungers and shade. Swimwear is for the bikini beach only; the public beach next to it needs modest dress. See what a bikini beach is.
Getting there from Velana airport
Most visitors take a shared speedboat, about 1.5 to 2 hours. Guides from 2023 to 2026 report fares from about USD 30 to 70 per person each way, so ask your guesthouse for a written price.
| Option | Time | Reported fare | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared speedboat | About 1.5 to 2 hours | USD 30 to 70 pp one way, varies by source | Mostly afternoon departures, book via guesthouse |
| Private speedboat | About 1.5 to 2 hours | From about USD 150 per boat | Late arrivals, groups |
| Public ferry via Mahibadhoo | About 4 to 5 hours | A few US dollars | Reported Mon, Wed, Sat mornings from Male |
| Domestic flight to Maamigili plus boat | Varies | Not quoted | Rarely needed |
Reported shared departures cluster around 14:30 to 16:00, sometimes with a morning boat. There is no ticket office, so your guesthouse reserves the seat. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals from KUL usually connect; with Batik Air's 21:55 arrival, plan a night in Hulhumale.
What to do on Omadhoo
Snorkelling the house reef is the daily routine. A 2026 guide describes a reef about 1 km long with entry points from the beach, with turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays reported.
Local fishermen draw stingrays to the fishing pier around 17:30, and reef sharks gather under the pier lights later at night. Watch from the pier, do not touch or feed them, and keep children close.
Guesthouses and operators sell whale shark trips, snorkelling and sandbank trips, night fishing and dives at sites such as Maamigili Beyru. A 2023 guide quoted a whale shark tour at about USD 130 per person; ask for a current price. Read whale shark encounter etiquette in South Ari before you book.
Where to stay
Guesthouses named in a 2026 island guide include Green Leaf Omadhoo, Kirulhiya Maldives (12 rooms), Hitha Maldives (4 rooms), Noomuraka Inn (4 rooms), Avenly Omadhoo, Bird Beak Beach, Dhoadhi Beach and Omadhoo Coral View Inn. Most are small and family-run.
When you shortlist, ask whether the rate includes breakfast and taxes, whether snorkel gear is free, how far the room is from the bikini beach and who books the speedboat. Confirm the registered property name on your invoice.
Sample budget for two
This is a planning example, not a quote: two adults, one room at USD 80 per night before tax, 4 nights, at RM 4.09 per USD. USD 80 sits inside the USD 60 to 180 guesthouse band in a 2026 market benchmark.
| Line | USD |
|---|---|
| Room, 4 nights x USD 80 | 320.00 |
| Service charge 10% | 32.00 |
| Tourism GST 17% on room plus service | 59.84 |
| Green Tax, 2 guests x 4 nights x USD 6 | 48.00 |
| Total before boats and trips | 459.84 |
| In ringgit for two | about RM 1,881 |
Add the speedboat once quoted: at USD 50 per person each way, two people return add USD 200, about RM 818. Then add flights, meals and trips. Use the trip cost calculator for your own figures.
Money, health and practical checklist
- Cash: sources disagree on the ATM, so bring US dollars from the airport. Small restaurants are often cash only.
- Health: a small health centre for basic care; serious cases go to Male.
- Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
- IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
- Season: about December to April for calmer seas; whale sharks peak about August to November.
When a different choice works better
Choose Dhigurah for a longer beach and more whale shark operators, or Maafushi for short trips and late flights. Choose a South Ari resort if privacy and full service matter most.
Choose Omadhoo when quiet, a good house reef and South Ari marine life come first, and you have at least four nights.
