Quick answer

Dhigurah is an inhabited local island in Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Velana airport by shared speedboat, reported at about USD 50 to 65 per person each way. It sits beside the South Ari Marine Protected Area, where whale sharks are seen year-round, and has a long bikini beach running to a sandbank at its southern tip. It suits travellers with 5 nights or more who want nature and calm over nightlife and shopping.

Dhigurah is the local island Malaysians pick when they want whale sharks and space rather than convenience. It is further from the airport than Maafushi, quieter and built around the sea.

This page covers what the island is like and who it suits. For local islands in general, start with our beginner guide to Maldives local islands.

What kind of island is Dhigurah?

Dhigurah is an inhabited local island in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, usually called South Ari. Its name is often translated as "long island", and it is long and thin, with the village toward the north and a beach running down the west side.

The south end narrows into a sandbank, often called Long Beach. A 2025 traveller guide describes it as about an hour's walk from the northern guesthouses, by beach or by a shaded path through the trees.

The island sits next to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, known for juvenile whale sharks. That location is the main reason people make the trip.

Short trips usually work better on Maafushi. See our Maafushi versus Dhigurah comparison for the full trade-off.

Island customs and the bikini beach

Dhigurah is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, shops and cafes.

The designated bikini beach is long, running along the west side of the island according to a 2025 traveller guide. Sun chairs near the sandbank end were reported as free, but there is nowhere to buy drinks there, so carry water.

How a stay on Dhigurah works

Most visitors land on a morning flight from KUL and take the late-morning shared speedboat, reaching the island early in the afternoon. The return boats leave Dhigurah early in the morning or early in the afternoon, so plan your flight home around them.

Days revolve around boat trips with guesthouses and dive centres: whale shark searches, manta and reef snorkelling, and sandbank visits. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at your guesthouse or one of a handful of cafes.

Getting there in brief

The shared speedboat takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, with a stop at Dhangethi. Reported fares are about USD 50 to 65 per person each way; confirm the current price with your guesthouse.

The faster option is a domestic flight of about 20 minutes to Maamigili, then a short taxi and boat ride. Times and options are on our page on how to get to Dhigurah from Male airport.

Money, services and taxes

Bring cash. A 2025 guide reported one ATM near the ferry terminal and minimarkets that usually do not accept cards.

Guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 10% service and 17% Tourism GST on the room. Our Dhigurah cost breakdown shows the arithmetic.

There is no hyperbaric chamber on Dhigurah. Divers should know the nearest confirmed chambers are at ADK Hospital in Male and at Kandima in Dhaalu Atoll.

Practical points before you go

  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Food: cafes reported in 2025 include Cafe Dune, Beach View Cafe, Malaveli and Shell Restaurant, but many guests eat at their guesthouse. Ask about half board.
  • Prayer: as on every inhabited island, local life follows prayer times, and shops may close briefly for prayers.
  • Season: the northeast monsoon, about December to April, is usually drier and calmer for the long boat ride.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers

Honeymooners who want quiet often like Dhigurah more than Maafushi, though there is no alcohol and no resort service. Some couples add one or two resort nights at the end; see moving from Dhigurah to a resort.

Older travellers should weigh the long boat ride. The Maamigili flight shortens the journey and is easier on rough days.

When a different choice works better

Choose Maafushi if your trip is 3 or 4 nights or your flight lands late. Choose a resort if privacy and full service matter more than wildlife.

Choose Dhigurah when you have time, want the sea to be the main event and are happy with a simple, quiet island.

Questions travellers ask

Is Dhigurah worth it for only 3 nights?
It is possible, but nearly a full day goes on transfers, and the early return boat can cut your last day short. With 3 nights you get about two days on the island. If whale sharks are the whole point, try for 5 nights to allow for weather and a second attempt.
Are whale sharks guaranteed?
No. Whale sharks are seen year-round in the South Ari Marine Protected Area, with most sightings from August to November, but sightings are never guaranteed on a single trip. Only SAMPA-certified guides may take tourists to them, so book through your guesthouse or a recognised dive centre.
Do I need cash on Dhigurah?
Yes, bring US dollars in small notes. A 2025 traveller guide reported one ATM near the ferry jetty and minimarkets that usually do not take cards. Do not rely on a single machine; withdraw at the airport if needed and confirm card payment with your guesthouse.
Is Dhigurah good for families?
The long, quiet beach suits children, and boat trips can be gentle. Facilities are simpler than on Maafushi, with fewer shops and cafes. A family that is comfortable with basic services and dress rules usually enjoys the space.
