Quick answer

South Ari is the Maldives' best-known whale shark atoll. Visit Maldives describes the South Ari Marine Protected Area as a year-round whale shark site, with most sightings from August to November. Resorts are about 25 minutes by seaplane or a short domestic flight to Maamigili, and local islands such as Dhigurah and Dhangethi are about 1.5 to 2 hours by shared speedboat. Where is South Ari, and what makes it different?

South Ari is the southern half of Ari Atoll, west of Male. The government atoll portal names it Ari Atholhu Dhekunuburi and notes that Ari was split into north and south administrative atolls in 1984.

What sets it apart is a long outer reef where whale sharks are seen all year. This makes South Ari one of the few Maldives atolls where a single animal shapes most trip plans. For how it fits among the other regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

The South Ari Marine Protected Area and whale sharks

Visit Maldives says the South Ari Marine Park became a Marine Protected Area in 2009 and calls it a year-round whale shark aggregation site. The largest numbers appear from August to November.

The rules matter for how you visit:

  • Certified guides only: tourists may visit whale sharks only with SAMPA-certified guides.
  • Keep your distance: stay at least 3 m from the head and body, never touch, and no flash.
  • Snorkel works well: whale sharks here often feed near the surface, so non-divers can join.

Read realistic whale shark expectations in South Ari and the whale shark etiquette guide before you go.

How do you get to South Ari from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then choose a seaplane, a domestic flight to Maamigili, or a shared speedboat for local islands.

Morning arrivals on AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines can reach any South Ari base the same day. Batik Air lands about 21:55, after seaplanes and shared boats stop, so plan a night near Male. Full detail is in getting to South Ari from Male airport.

Where to stay in South Ari

South Ari offers one of the widest choices in the country, from guesthouses to large resorts.

  • Resorts: names include Lily Beach, LUX* South Ari Atoll, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Centara Grand, Vilamendhoo and Nova. See the Lily Beach planning profile.
  • Dhigurah: the main guesthouse island facing the whale shark reef, with a long beach and sandbank. See the Dhigurah guide.
  • Dhangethi: a smaller guesthouse island on the same speedboat route, with a dive centre. See the Dhangethi guide.
  • Maamigili: the airport island, also facing the protected area.

Mahibadhoo is the atoll's administrative centre according to travel guides, though we have not confirmed this on an official page. Our South Ari local island versus resort comparison weighs the choice.

How long to stay in South Ari

Four nights is a sensible minimum if whale sharks are the goal. Sightings are not guaranteed on any one trip, so two or three excursions across your stay improve your odds.

Three nights works for a resort stay where whale sharks are a bonus rather than the point. Divers often add a night or two for reef dives in the wider atoll.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food: guesthouses on local islands serve Maldivian food without pork or alcohol; at resorts, ask in writing which outlets are halal.
  • Dress: on Dhigurah, Dhangethi and Maamigili, cover shoulders and knees away from the bikini beach.
  • Taxes: Green Tax is USD 12 per guest per night at resorts and USD 6 at registered guesthouses with 50 rooms or fewer.
  • Weather: the peak whale shark months fall in the wetter southwest monsoon, so allow for choppy days.

Who South Ari suits, and when to choose elsewhere

South Ari suits first-time snorkellers who want one big wildlife moment, families with confident swimmers, divers, and budget travellers happy on a guesthouse island. Honeymooners also do well, since several resorts sit close to the reef.

If mantas matter more than whale sharks and you travel June to November, compare Baa against South Ari. If you want quieter channels and fewer boats, the Vaavu atoll guide is worth a look. Transfer times and prices change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is South Ari the same as Alifu Dhaalu?
Yes. Alifu Dhaalu is the administrative name for the southern half of Ari Atoll, called Ari Atholhu Dhekunuburi on the government atoll portal. Resorts, guesthouses and dive operators usually say South Ari. Ari was split into north and south administrative atolls in 1984, so North Ari (Alifu Alifu) is a separate atoll with its own guide.
Are whale sharks guaranteed in South Ari?
No. Sightings are frequent but depend on weather, visibility and luck, and some trips see none. Visit Maldives says the largest numbers appear from August to November. Plan at least two whale shark excursions across a stay of four nights or more, and choose an operator with SAMPA-certified guides.
Can I stay on a local island and still see whale sharks?
Yes. Dhigurah and Maamigili face the protected area, and Visit Maldives lists them among the local islands closest to the whale shark reef. Guesthouses there run whale shark trips with certified guides, often combined with snorkelling or a sandbank stop. Prices vary by guesthouse, so ask for the per person rate and what it includes.
Is South Ari good for children?
Often, yes. Several resorts have lagoons and kids' facilities, and guesthouse islands are short boat rides from the reef. The whale shark trip itself is in open water, so it suits confident swimmers with life jackets. Ask the operator about minimum ages before you book.
