The short version
A seaplane transfer is a resort-arranged flight in a small floatplane from the airport island to a platform or jetty at your resort. It runs only in daylight and has a strict baggage limit.
The main operator is Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA). Manta Air also runs seaplane services for some resorts. Your resort tells you which one you are on.
For how seaplanes compare with speedboats and domestic flights, see Maldives airport transfers explained and the transfers hub.
Arrival day, step by step
This timeline uses the Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur landing about 11:25 Maldives time. Times after landing are typical planning estimates, not a schedule.
| Time (Maldives) | What happens |
|---|---|
| About 11:25 | Land at Velana International Airport |
| About 11:30 to 12:30 | Immigration, IMUGA check, baggage collection |
| About 12:30 | Meet the resort host in arrivals, bags are tagged and weighed |
| About 12:45 | Short shuttle to the seaplane terminal |
| About 13:00 to 15:00 | Wait in the resort or operator lounge |
| Departure slot | Flight of about 25 to 60 minutes |
| Arrival | Land at a floating platform, short boat or walk to the resort |
The lounge wait is the part that surprises people. Seaplanes group guests from several flights, so a one to three hour wait is normal.
What happens at the seaplane terminal
Your bags are weighed against the 20 kg checked allowance. The 5 kg hand allowance is for a small bag you keep with you.
Excess is charged at USD 5 per kg plus tax. Two people each 6 kg over would pay about USD 60, roughly RM245 at RM4.09 per USD, before tax. Our page on seaplane luggage allowances covers this in more depth.
Passengers may also be weighed for balance on these small aircraft. It is routine and done discreetly.
On board the seaplane
Seaplanes used for transfers carry about 15 passengers. The cabin is noisy, so ear plugs are often handed out.
Pilots fly barefoot by tradition, and there is no cabin crew service. Seats are near windows, so keep your phone or camera in your hand bag for the reef views.
Seaplanes land on water, which feels smoother than many people expect. You step out onto a floating platform with crew help.
What to keep in your hand bag
Because the checked bag may travel separately on a rare occasion, pack the hand bag as if it must last a few hours.
- Medicines and any baby supplies.
- Sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen, because platforms have little shade.
- Swimwear and a light change of clothes.
- Phone, power bank and passport.
- A light jacket for the air-conditioned lounge.
- Ear plugs if you are sensitive to noise.
Departure day
TMA says it handles guests whose international flight leaves after about 09:00. Your resort sets the pickup time, often several hours before the home flight.
All three nonstop flights to Kuala Lumpur leave in the afternoon or later, so most Malaysians fit this easily. Expect a lounge wait at the airport after the seaplane lands.
Weather, waits and changes on the day
Seaplanes depend on visibility and sea state as well as daylight. Heavy rain squalls can pause departures for a while, and the lounge wait gets longer as a result.
This is most likely in the wetter southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, though squalls usually pass within an hour or two. Your resort host will keep you updated in the lounge.
If the delay runs close to sunset, the resort arranges a night near the airport and a morning flight. Our page on seaplane delays explains who arranges what.
Costs to expect beyond the fare
The seaplane fare itself is usually quoted per adult return. Third-party benchmarks put shared seaplanes at about USD 400 to 820 per adult return (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026), and children aged 2 to 11 often pay less.
Extras that can appear on the bill include excess baggage, food in a shared lounge, and tax added to the transfer if it was quoted net. Ask your resort which of these apply before you travel.
A private charter costs far more than a shared seat. It is only worth pricing for groups, special equipment such as surfboards, or a tight international connection.
Who a seaplane transfer suits
Seaplanes suit couples and families on morning flights who want a remote resort, and anyone for whom the aerial view is part of the trip. They suit travellers less well when luggage is heavy, flights land late, or someone has limited mobility.
Infants under two fly free but have no seat or baggage allowance, so plan baby kit within the parents' 25 kg each. If timing is your concern, read whether seaplanes fly after dark and what happens if your seaplane is delayed.
Questions travellers ask
Will I know my seaplane time before I fly?
Can I sit next to the pilot or choose a window?
Is there a toilet on board?
What if my bag goes on a later seaplane?
