Speedboat transfer versus seaplane: cost and experience compared

Choosing between a speedboat resort and a seaplane resort is really a choice about budget, flight times and how far from Male you want to wake up.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

A speedboat resort is usually the better value and the safer fit for short trips or late flights from Malaysia, at about USD 100 to 370 per adult return. A seaplane resort costs about USD 400 to 820 per adult return and flies only in daylight, but it reaches quieter, more remote atolls with a memorable flight. For a couple, the gap is often RM3,000 to RM5,000.

The verdict by traveller type

Choose a speedboat resort if your trip is three or four nights, your flight lands late, or the budget is tight. Choose a seaplane resort if remoteness and the arrival itself are part of the holiday, and your flight lands in the morning.

What the difference costs a Malaysian couple

The transfer gap is the number to watch. Using the midpoints of the two ranges, here is the arithmetic for two adults.

Basis: 2 adults, returnSpeedboatSeaplane
Per adult (midpoint)USD 235USD 610
For twoUSD 470USD 1,220
At RM4.09 per USDAbout RM1,922About RM4,990
DifferenceAbout RM3,070 more

At the top of both ranges the gap rises to about RM3,680. Put that against your nightly room rate to see how many extra nights it buys. The trip cost calculator does this for your own figures.

Malaysian agency packages sometimes include the seaplane in the price. HolidayGoGoGo's Brennia Kottefaru 4D3N honeymoon, for example, listed a return seaplane within RM4,799 to RM6,199 per person, excluding flights (checked 11 Oct 2026). Compare complete packages like for like.

The experience: what each arrival feels like

A speedboat arrival is quick and simple. You walk from arrivals to the jetty, board with your bags and reach many resorts within an hour. In the wetter southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, the ride can be lively.

A seaplane arrival has more steps. You shuttle to the seaplane terminal, wait in a lounge, then fly low over reefs and sandbanks. Many travellers count that view among the highlights of the trip.

The seaplane also lands on a platform or jetty, sometimes followed by a short boat ride. Expect barefoot crew and no cabin service on a flight this short.

Flight times decide more than people expect

From Kuala Lumpur, the AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning flights (landing about 09:50 and 11:25) give enough time for a seaplane. The Batik Air flight landing about 21:55 does not.

Taking that evening flight to a seaplane resort means a night in Hulhumale and losing most of a morning. On a three-night trip, that is a third of your resort time. Read whether seaplanes fly after dark before choosing a late flight.

When the other choice is the better one

A speedboat resort is a weaker fit if you want to snorkel in a remote atoll or go somewhere with few other islands in view. A seaplane resort is a weaker fit for seasick-prone travellers on longer boat legs, since some seaplane resorts still add a boat.

Families with toddlers often prefer the shortest total journey, which is usually a near-Male speedboat. Couples on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon often decide the seaplane is worth the extra.

A quick decision rule

Work through these four questions in order. The first "yes" usually settles it.

  1. Does your flight land in Male after about 14:30? If yes, a speedboat resort avoids losing a night, because seaplane guests need time to clear arrivals before the 15:30 planning cut-off.
  2. Is the trip three nights or fewer? If yes, a speedboat resort gives you more hours on the island for less money.
  3. Does anyone in your group get badly seasick, or is anyone pregnant or travelling with a baby? If yes, ask each resort how long the boat leg is, and lean towards the shorter total journey.
  4. Is the arrival view or a remote atoll a priority, and is the extra RM3,000 or so comfortable? If yes, a seaplane resort is worth it.

If none of these settle it, compare two specific resorts on full price for your dates. The cheaper total is often the speedboat resort, but not always.

Hidden costs on each side

Seaplane trips have more small extras. Excess baggage on Trans Maldivian is USD 5 per kg plus tax, and a lounge may charge for food if your resort has no private lounge.

Speedboat trips have fewer extras, but private boats for late arrivals can cost much more than the shared rate. Ask for the night surcharge in writing if your flight lands after dark.

Both may add Tourism GST to the transfer price. Check whether each quote is before or after tax.

If you are still unsure, what to expect on a seaplane transfer walks through the day step by step.

Questions travellers ask

Is a speedboat resort less "Maldives" than a seaplane resort?
The water, reefs and villas are similar in quality across both groups. Speedboat resorts sit in North and South Male atolls, so you may see other islands, boats or planes on the horizon. Seaplane resorts are more isolated, and some sit near marine areas like Baa or Ari. The difference is remoteness, not beauty.
Can a seaplane resort ever be cheaper overall?
Yes, sometimes. A seaplane resort running a package offer with transfers included can undercut a speedboat resort with a high room rate. Always compare the full stay, including transfers, taxes and meals, rather than room rates alone. Packages from Malaysian agencies often bundle the seaplane, which makes this comparison easier.
Which is better with heavy luggage?
Speedboats are more forgiving. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per person and charges USD 5 per kg over that. Speedboats rarely enforce a strict weight. If you fly in with 30 kg each on Malaysia Airlines, a seaplane trip may add excess charges.
Are seaplanes safe for older parents?
Seaplanes board from a floating platform with crew help, and seats are close together. Most fit, mobile older travellers manage well. Anyone with limited mobility should ask the resort how boarding works and whether a speedboat or domestic flight alternative exists.
