Speedboat versus seaplane transfers in the Maldives, priced in ringgit

You have shortlisted two resorts and one needs a seaplane, so you want to know what that really adds to the trip.

Quick answer

A shared seaplane usually costs about USD 400 to 820 per adult return, against roughly USD 100 to 370 for a shared speedboat to a resort near Male. For a couple that gap is about RM2,500 to RM5,400 before taxes. The seaplane also brings a 15:30 landing cut-off and a 20 kg bag limit, which can add a hotel night or excess baggage fees.

How much more does a seaplane cost than a speedboat?

A shared seaplane costs roughly USD 400 to 820 per adult return, while a shared speedboat to a resort near Male costs about USD 100 to 370 per person return. Those are third-party guide ranges checked on 11 October 2026, and each resort sets its own price.

The gap matters because transfers are paid per person, on top of the room. It is often the single biggest line after flights and accommodation, which is why the Budget and Real Cost hub treats it as its own budget line.

Couple and family costs in ringgit

The table converts the ranges at RM4.09 per USD (Business Today, 7 October 2026). Figures are before any taxes the resort adds to the transfer, and before excess baggage.

Transfer typePer adult return (USD)Couple (USD)Couple (RM)
Shared speedboat, resort near Male100 to 370200 to 740about 820 to 3,030
Domestic flight plus speedboat350 to 520700 to 1,040about 2,860 to 4,250
Shared seaplane400 to 820800 to 1,640about 3,270 to 6,710

The arithmetic for the seaplane top end is 820 x 2 = USD 1,640, then 1,640 x 4.09 = RM6,707.60.

For a family of two adults and two children aged 2 to 11, guides report child fares about 30% to 40% below adult fares. On a USD 600 adult seaplane fare, that suggests roughly USD 360 to 420 per child, so about USD 1,920 to 2,040 for four people, or RM7,850 to RM8,340.

The costs that do not appear on the transfer line

The seaplane price is only part of its cost. Three knock-on items can change the total more than the fare difference itself.

The 15:30 cut-off. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so you need to land in Male by about 15:30 to reach the resort the same day. AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) usually make it, while Batik Air (about 21:55) does not.

The extra hotel night. A Batik Air arrival on a seaplane trip means a night in Hulhumale or an airport hotel, plus a morning transfer back to the seaplane terminal. A speedboat resort can often take you the same evening, so ask the resort about late boats.

Baggage. Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage, charges USD 5 per extra kg plus taxes, and caps any single bag at 32 kg. A couple carrying 28 kg each would pay 8 x 2 x USD 5 = USD 80 each way, about RM330, before taxes.

Worked example: the cheaper flight that costs more

Take a couple choosing between a cheap evening Batik Air fare and a daytime AirAsia fare for a seaplane resort. On 11 October 2026 Traveloka showed early November one-way fares of about RM473 on AirAsia and RM479 on Batik Air, so the airfare difference was small.

The Batik option then needs a night near the airport, which the seaplane resort's speedboat-only rival would avoid. Once that hotel night and its transfers are added, the "cheaper" flight is usually the dearer trip.

The rule of thumb: price the arrival time before you price the resort. Our airport to resort transfer budgeting page covers the full list of transfer charges by atoll.

Decision rule: which transfer suits you?

Use the speedboat if your budget is tight, you arrive in the evening, or you are travelling with older parents who prefer a short, simple trip. Resorts in North and South Male Atoll are usually a short boat ride from the airport, so ask each resort for its stated journey time.

Use the seaplane if the resort you want is far from Male, you land before mid-afternoon, and the 20 kg limit suits your packing. Many honeymooners see the flight itself as part of the holiday, which is a fair reason to pay for it.

Consider domestic flight plus speedboat for distant atolls such as Addu or Dhaalu, where it can cost less than a seaplane and suits some later arrivals. Our explainer on why a cheaper island can need a more expensive transfer shows how room savings can be cancelled out.

Who should look past the seaplane

Families with young children often find the speedboat easier: no bag weighing, no daylight deadline and less waiting at the terminal. Travellers prone to motion sickness should know that speedboats feel rough in the wetter southwest monsoon (about May to November), while seaplanes are quick but can be bumpy too.

Divers with heavy gear and surfers should check the luggage rules first. Trans Maldivian states that surfboards cannot travel on scheduled seaplanes and need a charter, which changes the maths entirely.

Prices change with each resort's contract, so treat every figure here as a planning range and confirm the live transfer rate with the resort. To see how transfers sit alongside taxes, flights and meals, run your numbers through the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Can I pay for the seaplane on arrival instead of in advance?
Resorts normally arrange seaplane seats themselves and want the transfer confirmed with the room, because flights are scheduled around confirmed guests. Some bill it to your room account, others ask for prepayment. Ask the resort or your travel provider which applies, and whether the quoted transfer figure already includes taxes, so you compare like with like.
Do children pay the full seaplane fare?
Usually not. Third-party transfer guides report that children aged 2 to 11 typically pay about 30% to 40% less than adults, and Trans Maldivian carries infants under two free but without a baggage allowance. Each resort sets its own child rate, so ask for the child price in writing when you request a family quote.
Is a private speedboat much more expensive than a shared one?
Private boats are priced per boat, not per person, so the gap shrinks as your group grows. For a couple it is usually a clear premium. For a family of five or a group of friends it can come close to the shared per-person total. Ask for both options when the resort is within an hour of Male.
Does a domestic flight plus speedboat cost less than a seaplane?
Often a little. Guides put domestic flight plus boat at about USD 350 to 520 per adult return, against USD 400 to 820 for a shared seaplane. Domestic flights also run after dark on some routes, which can help evening arrivals. The trade-off is two legs and a longer door-to-door time.
