You are looking at Maldives dates over Christmas or New Year and want to know what the compulsory gala dinner adds before you commit.

Quick answer

Many Maldives hotels and resorts add a compulsory gala dinner charge for every guest staying on 24 and 31 December. Published 2026 examples range from RM625 and RM725 per adult at a Maafushi hotel package to USD 550++ and USD 750++ per adult at Radisson Blu Resort Maldives, which is about RM2,895 and RM3,948 after service charge and GST. A couple staying over both nights at that resort would add about RM13,686 to their bill.

What a compulsory gala dinner is

It is a set festive dinner on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, or both, that a hotel charges to every guest staying that night. It is billed on top of your room or package, even when your meals are already included.

The charge usually covers a buffet or set menu with entertainment. You pay it whether or not you attend. Our Budget and Real Cost hub covers the other charges that appear only on certain dates.

2026 examples in ringgit

Here are two published 2026 examples at opposite ends of the market, checked on 12 October 2026. Prices marked ++ have 10% service charge and 17% GST added, an uplift of about 28.7%.

Property and basis24 December31 December
Arena Beach Hotel, Maafushi (HolidayGoGoGo package), per adultRM625RM725
Same, per childRM285RM335
Radisson Blu Resort Maldives, per adultUSD 550++ = about RM2,895USD 750++ = about RM3,948
Same, per child aged 6 to 11USD 325++ = about RM1,711USD 425++ = about RM2,237

The RM figures for Radisson are calculated as USD x 1.287 x 4.09. For example, 550 x 1.287 = USD 707.85, which is about RM2,895.

Even a local-island hotel package carries a compulsory dinner. Do not assume the charge only applies at luxury resorts.

Worked example: what a family adds over both nights

Radisson Blu Resort Maldives says the supplements apply to stays between 24 and 31 December 2026. Here is the gala cost alone for three parties staying over both nights.

PartyCalculation (USD, after ++)Approx. RM
Couple2 x (707.85 + 965.25) = 3,346.2013,686
Couple plus child aged 83,346.20 + 418.28 + 546.98 = 4,311.4617,634
Couple at Arena Beach package2 x (625 + 725)2,700

The couple at the resort would pay more for two dinners than many Malaysians spend on a whole local-island trip. That is why the dinner belongs in your budget before you choose dates.

How to plan dates around the gala nights

The simplest decision rule: if your trip does not include the nights of 24 or 31 December, you pay no gala charge. A stay from 26 to 30 December avoids both at most hotels that charge per night.

Many packages are also not priced across the festive peak at all. AF Travel's Le Meridien Thilamaafushi package, checked 12 October 2026, prices travel to 23 December 2026 and from 11 January 2027, with the gap unpriced. Expect a separate quote, and higher rates, for those dates.

Before choosing December dates, check four things:

  1. Which nights carry a compulsory dinner, and the price per adult and child.
  2. Whether the price is nett or ++.
  3. Whether a minimum stay applies over the festive period.
  4. Whether your package lists festive surcharges as excluded.

How to watch for gala charges before you book

Gala prices are often published late, sometimes only a few months before December. If a resort has not yet published its festive terms, assume a charge exists and ask for last year's figure as a guide.

Look for these phrases on resort pages, package pages and invoices. Each one usually signals a compulsory charge.

  • "Mandatory festive gala dinner supplement"
  • "Compulsory Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve dinner"
  • "Festive surcharge" or "peak season supplement"
  • "Festive gala dinners excluded" in a package's exclusions

The HolidayGoGoGo Adaaran Club Rannalhi package, checked 11 October 2026, lists festive gala dinners as excluded even though its meals and drinks are all-inclusive. That wording means the dinner will be billed separately if your stay covers those nights.

Also ask how the charge is paid. Some resorts add it to your final bill at checkout, while some agencies collect it with the package balance. Either way, it is not optional once you stay that night.

For Muslim travellers and families with young children, ask what the dinner includes. A set menu with free-flow wine is priced differently from a family buffet, and the resort may offer a halal or alcohol-free alternative.

Who the festive dates suit, and who should shift

Festive dates suit couples and families who want a celebration and have budgeted for it. The Malaysian school holiday at year-end makes this window tempting for families too.

Travellers watching cost get more from early December or mid-January, when the drier northeast monsoon has usually started and the gala nights are behind you. If you must travel then, a local island stay keeps the dinner charge in the hundreds rather than thousands.

For how an all-in tax check works, see the tax-inclusive versus tax-exclusive audit checklist. For family pricing line by line, read adult, child and infant pricing. Then add the gala line to the trip cost calculator.

Questions travellers ask

Can I skip the gala dinner if I do not want to attend?
Usually not. Where a resort calls the dinner compulsory or mandatory, it is charged to everyone staying that night whether or not they attend. Some resorts offer an alternative venue or in-villa dining for the same charge. Ask before booking rather than at check-in.
Is the gala dinner charge halal or alcohol-free?
Gala dinners are often built around a set menu and may include wine or champagne in the price. Muslim travellers should ask the resort for a halal menu, whether alcohol is included, and whether a non-alcoholic version carries a lower charge. Get the answer in writing with your booking.
Are children charged for gala dinners?
Often, at a reduced rate. Radisson Blu Resort Maldives lists 2026 child rates for ages 6 to 11, and HolidayGoGoGo's Arena Beach package lists RM285 and RM335 per child. Age bands differ by resort, so ask how infants and under-6s are treated.
Does an all-inclusive package already cover the gala dinner?
Often not. The HolidayGoGoGo Adaaran Club Rannalhi and Brennia Kottefaru packages checked in October 2026 list festive gala dinners or festive surcharges as excluded, even though meals are included. Check the exclusions line for any package covering late December.
