Thoddoo versus Ukulhas for snorkelling beginners

You are new to snorkelling, want easy reef time and good beach days, and are choosing between two North Ari local islands.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Ukulhas usually suits nervous beginners better, because it is small, its lagoon and reef sit close to the main tourist beach, and shared speedboats run several times a day. Thoddoo suits beginners who want more space and a greener island, but its outer reef has stronger currents, so plan guided snorkel trips there. On both, choose a guesthouse with breakfast included and a guide for your first sessions.

The short verdict for beginners

Ukulhas is the gentler start: a small island with a lagoon and reef close to the main beach. Thoddoo is the roomier, greener choice, with good snorkelling but stronger currents at the outer reef.

Either works for a first-timer who snorkels with a guide. This page sits in the comparisons and trade-offs hub, and the beginner snorkelling guide covers technique.

A beginner readiness checklist

Score yourself honestly before choosing. The more "no" answers, the more you should favour Ukulhas and guided trips.

  1. Can you float on your back for a minute without help?
  2. Have you used a mask and snorkel before, even in a pool?
  3. Are you comfortable in water where you cannot stand?
  4. Can you stay calm if water gets into your mask?
  5. Will you always snorkel with a buddy or guide?

If you answered no to two or more, start in the lagoon with a life jacket. The guide on whether non-swimmers can snorkel explains how.

Beach time and breakfast-inclusive guesthouses

For a trip that is half beach, half reef, Ukulhas edges ahead because its lagoon beach is the island's main attraction. Thoddoo's beach is calmer and quieter, with farms to explore when you want a break from the sea.

On both islands, many guesthouses include breakfast in the room rate. That matters more on Thoddoo, where fewer restaurants mean breakfast and a dinner plan save effort.

When comparing listings, check three things: breakfast included, distance to the bikini beach, and whether snorkel gear is lent free.

Cost for two, worked out

Return shared speedboats for two adults:

  • Ukulhas: USD 50 to 55 × 2 × 2 = USD 200 to 220, about RM818 to RM900 at RM4.09.
  • Thoddoo: USD 62 × 2 × 2 = USD 248, about RM1,014.

Rooms on both fall in the guesthouse band of roughly USD 60 to 180 per night before tax. Green Tax is USD 6 per guest per night at small guesthouses. Use the trip cost calculator for the full picture.

A sensible first three days

Day one is for the lagoon. Practise breathing through the snorkel in water where you can stand, and check that your mask seals.

Day two is a short guided boat trip with life jackets on board. Tell the guide you are a beginner so they choose a sheltered site.

Day three is your choice: a second guided trip, or a lazy beach day. Beginners often improve fastest with two short sessions rather than one long one.

When to go for calm water

The northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, usually brings calmer seas and easier boat days. That suits beginners on both islands.

In the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, wind and rain can stir up the water and cancel trips. Leave a spare day in your plan, and read whether you can snorkel in the rainy season.

Safety habits on either island

Snorkel in daylight, with a buddy, and tell your guesthouse where you are going. Ask each morning about currents and wind.

Stay in the lagoon unless a guide is with you. On Thoddoo, avoid the outer reef edge on your own.

Wear a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen. On local islands, cover up when you leave the bikini beach.

Who should choose each

Choose Ukulhas if you are a nervous beginner, a family with children, or someone who wants beach days with the reef nearby. It also pairs easily with Rasdhoo, as described in moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas.

Choose Thoddoo if you are a confident swimmer who wants space, fresh fruit and guided boat snorkelling. Couples weighing Thoddoo against a South Ari island can read Dhigurah versus Thoddoo for a couple.

Questions travellers ask

Do guesthouses on Thoddoo and Ukulhas include breakfast?
Many do, and breakfast-inclusive rates are common across local island guesthouses, but it is not universal. Check the listing says breakfast included, and ask whether it is a set Maldivian or continental breakfast. Ask too whether lunch and dinner can be added as half board, which helps on Thoddoo where restaurants are fewer.
Can I hire snorkel gear on the island?
Guesthouses and excursion operators on both islands usually lend or rent masks, snorkels and fins, but sizes and condition vary. Beginners often bring their own well-fitting mask from Malaysia, since a leaking mask is the most common reason first sessions go badly. Life jackets are normally available on guided trips; confirm before you go.
Which island is better for children learning to snorkel?
Ukulhas, on balance, because the beach and lagoon are close to most guesthouses and the island is easy to walk. Keep children inside the lagoon with an adult in the water and a flotation vest. On either island, ask for a private or small-group guided trip rather than joining a large boat.
Which island has the better beach for lazy days?
Ukulhas is known for its lagoon beach, which is the main reason many people choose it. Thoddoo has a designated bikini beach that travel guides describe as calm and quieter. If your trip is more beach than reef, Ukulhas edges it; if you want to mix beach with cycling and farms, Thoddoo works well.
