Thoddoo island guide for Malaysians: farms, two beaches and a quiet pace

You want a local island with more space and greenery than Maafushi and are wondering if Thoddoo fits your trip.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Thoddoo is an inhabited farming island in Alifu Alifu (North Ari) Atoll, about 1 to 1.5 hours from Velana airport by shared speedboat. It has designated tourist beaches, a reef within a short swim, a Bank of Maldives USD ATM since August 2025 and, since February 2026, a twice-weekly Maldivian seaplane. It suits couples, friends and families with 4 nights or more who want a calm, green island rather than nightlife.

Thoddoo is the local island Malaysians choose when they want greenery, space and a calmer beach rather than a busy excursion hub. It is a farming island first and a tourist island second.

This page covers what Thoddoo is like and who it suits. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, and browse other options in the island directory.

What kind of island is Thoddoo?

Thoddoo is an inhabited local island in Alifu Alifu Atoll, usually called North Ari. It sits on its own, away from the main ring of the atoll, and is larger than many guesthouse islands.

It is known for its farms. Papaya and passion fruit are the main crops, with watermelon and vegetables in smaller amounts, according to Wikivoyage. Fruit farm visits are one of the island's simple pleasures.

Tourism has grown fast. When Bank of Maldives installed a USD ATM on 20 August 2025, it described Thoddoo as having more than 50 guesthouses.

Island customs and the tourist beaches

Thoddoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, shops and cafes, and keep swimwear for the tourist beach.

aMaldives (updated April 2026) describes two designated tourist beaches: Sunrise Beach in the northeast, usually quieter, and Sunset Beach on the west, which is larger. Loungers and hammocks are usually free. Ask your guesthouse which beach is closest.

The general rules are in what a bikini beach is.

How a stay on Thoddoo works

Most Malaysians land on a morning flight from KUL and take an afternoon shared speedboat, reaching the island before dinner. Return boats to Male leave around 07:00, so the last morning is early.

Days are simple: a guided snorkel or island hopping trip, a cycle to the farms, an afternoon on the beach. Evenings mean dinner at your guesthouse or one of a handful of cafes. Activity ideas are on what to do on Thoddoo.

Getting there in brief

Shared speedboats take about 1 to 1.5 hours, with departures reported around 10:00 and 16:00 from Male. Since 12 February 2026, Maldivian also flies a seaplane to Thoddoo on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The details, fares and timing rules are on how to get to Thoddoo from Male airport.

Money, health and services

  • ATM: Bank of Maldives opened a USD ATM on 20 August 2025, with a branch planned for 2026. Still carry some cash for small shops.
  • Health: travel guides report a health centre and pharmacy for minor issues; serious cases go to Male.
  • Mobile data: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo both offer 4G, and guesthouse WiFi can be slow.
  • Taxes: small guesthouses charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 10% service and 17% Tourism GST on the room.

Our Thoddoo cost breakdown shows how those add up.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers

Honeymooners who want privacy and quiet often like Thoddoo, though there is no alcohol and no resort service. Many couples add a resort night or two at the end of the trip.

Families do well with a guesthouse near the beach and a guided snorkel trip rather than reef swims alone. Older travellers may prefer the seaplane day, which removes a long boat ride on a rough sea.

When a different choice works better

Choose Maafushi if your trip is 3 nights or you want many excursions and cafes close at hand. Choose Ukulhas if you want a small, walkable island with the beach on your doorstep; see the Ukulhas island guide.

Choose Thoddoo when you want room to breathe, fresh fruit and a quiet beach, and can plan around a few boats a day.

Questions travellers ask

Is Thoddoo good for a first local island trip?
It can be, if your flight lands in the morning and you have at least 4 nights. Thoddoo is calmer and has fewer cafes and excursions on sale than Maafushi, so first-timers who want a busy island usually prefer Maafushi. Those who want quiet beaches and room to cycle often prefer Thoddoo.
Can I use a card on Thoddoo?
Some guesthouses accept cards, sometimes with a fee or minimum, but small shops and cafes are often cash only. Bank of Maldives opened a USD ATM on the island in August 2025. Bring US dollars in small notes as well, in case the machine is out of service.
Is there a clinic on Thoddoo?
Travel guides report a health centre and pharmacy for minor problems. Serious cases are transferred to Male, so take travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, and bring any regular medicines from Malaysia in their original packaging.
Is Thoddoo halal?
Thoddoo is a Muslim community, food in local cafes and guesthouses is halal by default, and alcohol is not sold on the island. Prayer times shape the day, and many village shops close around Friday midday prayers. Muslim travellers usually find it an easy fit.
