Ukulhas is the local island for people who want the beach to be the centre of the trip. It is small, tidy and easy to settle into.

This page covers what Ukulhas is like and who it suits. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, and browse other options in the island directory.

What kind of island is Ukulhas?

Ukulhas is an inhabited island in Alifu Alifu Atoll, usually called North Ari. Wikivoyage gives its size as about 1,025 metres long and 225 metres wide, with around 1,000 residents.

The village fills the middle of the island. The tourist beach runs along the western and southern sides, about 1 km of sand according to aMaldives (April 2026), with a shallow lagoon in front.

The island has a long-standing reputation for keeping its streets and beaches clean. Island guides credit it with one of the first organised waste management programmes on an inhabited island.

Island customs and the tourist beach

Ukulhas is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, and wear swimwear only on the designated tourist beach. Wikivoyage notes the rule is strictly enforced.

aMaldives describes free sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach. Walk there in covered clothing and change on the beach. The general rules are in what a bikini beach is.

How a stay on Ukulhas works

Most Malaysians fly in on a morning flight from KUL and take an afternoon shared speedboat. You arrive in time for a swim and sunset.

Days mix lagoon swims, a snorkel or manta trip, a sandbank picnic and long lunches. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at a handful of restaurants and cafes. See what to do on Ukulhas for ideas.

Return boats leave early in the morning or around midday, so plan your last night with your flight home in mind.

Getting there in brief

A 2026 tour operator lists shared speedboats from Male at 10:30 and 16:00 (09:30 and 16:30 on Fridays). Booking listings in October 2026 showed fares of about USD 50 to 55 per person one way.

Public ferries also run a few days a week but take around 4 hours. Full details are on how to get to Ukulhas from Male airport.

Money, health and services

  • Bank: Bank of Maldives opened a branch with a USD ATM on 21 August 2025. Older guides that say "no ATM" are out of date. Still bring some cash.
  • Cards: some restaurants accept cards, sometimes with a fee of around 3%; small places may be cash only.
  • Health: Wikivoyage and aMaldives report a health centre and pharmacy. Serious cases go to Male.
  • Mosques: a few small mosques, one of them dating from the 17th century, according to Wikivoyage.
  • Mobile data: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo both cover the island.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers

Honeymooners like the beach and the calm, though there is no alcohol and no resort privacy. A common plan is 3 or 4 nights on Ukulhas, then a resort night or two before flying home.

Families benefit from the short distances: everything is a few minutes' walk. Older travellers should weigh the 1 to 1.5 hour boat ride; the seaplane serves nearby Rasdhoo, not Ukulhas, so the boat is the usual way in.

When a different choice works better

Choose Maafushi for 3 nights, a lower transfer cost and more excursions. Choose Thoddoo for more space, greenery and cycling; see the Thoddoo island guide.

Choose Ukulhas when you want a calm, clean island with the beach a short walk from your door.

Questions travellers ask

Is Ukulhas good for a first local island trip?
Yes, for most travellers who land in the morning. The island is small and easy to understand, the tourist beach is close to most guesthouses, and there are enough cafes and trips without the busyness of Maafushi. The main trade-off is a longer, pricier transfer than Maafushi.
Is Ukulhas good for children?
It is one of the easier local islands for families. Distances are short, the lagoon beach has shallow water, and a health centre is on the island. Children still need a vest and an adult in the water. Ask guesthouses for family rooms and cots in advance.
Can I visit Ukulhas from a resort or Rasdhoo?
Yes. Ukulhas is close to Rasdhoo, linked by public boat and speedboat, so some travellers split their nights between the two. Trips from nearby resorts are possible but must be arranged with the resort. See our page on moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas for options.
Is alcohol available on Ukulhas?
No. Alcohol is banned on inhabited islands, including Ukulhas. Guesthouses can sometimes arrange a day trip to a resort or a safari boat if you want a drink. Muslim travellers often find this one of the island's advantages.
