Maldives immigration checklist for a Malaysian family

You are organising passports and forms for the whole family and want one list that covers everyone from booking to the Velana counter.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

For each family member you need a machine-readable passport with at least one month of validity, a seat on a confirmed return ticket, a place on the prepaid booking and an IMUGA declaration filed within 96 hours of landing. The family needs enough funds for the stay. Work through the list in three rounds: at booking, in the final week and at the airport.

Key facts

  • IMUGA window

    96 hours before arrival

    One per person, free

  • Departure declaration

    Not required

    Scrapped 15 Aug 2024

This checklist covers every Maldives entry item for a Malaysian family, grouped by when to do it. Tick each one per person, not just per family.

The rules come from the Maldives Immigration tourist visa page, checked on 12 October 2026. For the reasoning behind each item, see the entry and travel paperwork hub and the guide to entry requirements for Malaysian children.

The per-person document grid

Copy this grid into your notes app and fill it in for your family. Every column must be complete for every traveller before you leave for KLIA.

The official passport rule is one month. We use six months in the grid because some airlines apply it at check-in, as explained in the passport validity guide.

Round 1: when you choose your dates

  • Check every passport's expiry date. Why: renewals take time, and children's passports often expire first.
  • Confirm no one holds an extended-validity or emergency passport. Why: extended passports are refused, and emergency passports need checking, see entering with an emergency passport.
  • Book a confirmed return for every person, including infants. Why: each traveller needs their own seat or infant booking on the return.
  • Pay for a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse that lists every family member and child age. Why: the rule asks for a prepaid confirmed booking, and occupancy limits apply.
  • Book a Male or Hulhumale night if you land late. Why: seaplanes stop at sunset, and late arrivals cannot reach seaplane resorts the same day.

Round 2: the final week

  • Prepare a consent letter and birth certificates if a parent is not travelling. Why: officers and airlines may ask who is responsible for a child.
  • Save all confirmations in one phone folder and print one set. Why: arrival halls are not the place to search emails.
  • Enable cards for overseas use and get some US dollars. Why: you must have enough funds, and resorts take deposits.
  • Leave alcohol and pork products out of your bags. Why: both are prohibited imports and will be taken at customs.
  • File IMUGA for every person once the 96-hour window opens. Why: it is mandatory for each traveller, babies included. Our IMUGA timing guide gives the opening time for each KLIA flight.

Round 3: at KLIA and Velana

  • Check every QR code opens on the phone before leaving home. Why: some airlines ask for it at check-in.
  • Keep passports and matching QR codes together, in the same order. Why: it speeds up the counter for the whole family.
  • Carry the booking voucher and return e-tickets in hand luggage. Why: officers may ask, and checked bags are out of reach.
  • Keep children with you at the immigration counter. Why: the officer may want to see each traveller with their passport.

A worked example: a family of five on the AirAsia morning flight

The Tans fly AirAsia from KUL on a Sunday, landing in Male at about 09:50. Their IMUGA window opens on Wednesday at 09:50 Male time, which is 12:50 in Malaysia.

They file all five declarations on Thursday night. Each QR code is saved as "Tan_Mum", "Tan_Dad", "Tan_Kid1" and so on, then printed on one page.

The youngest is 18 months old, so she pays no Green Tax and has her own passport and declaration. The grandmother's passport expires in eight months, which clears both the official rule and the six-month buffer.

When this checklist is not enough

Some families need extra steps. Families arriving from or transiting a yellow fever risk country need certificates, except for infants under one.

Families continuing to a third country must also meet that country's entry rules. Expatriate families in Malaysia should check each nationality's passport rules separately.

Once the paperwork is done, turn to the budget. Our guide on Maldives trip costs from Malaysia shows how children change the total, and the IMUGA step-by-step guide covers the form itself.

Questions travellers ask

How long does the whole family's paperwork take?
If passports are valid, the bookings are paid and everyone's details are to hand, IMUGA takes about ten minutes per person. A family of five should set aside about an hour, plus time to save and label each QR code. Passport renewals are the slow part, so check those first.
Should one person hold all the documents?
One organised adult holding everything is efficient at the counter, but risky if that bag goes missing. A good compromise is one adult with the originals and a second adult with photos of every passport, booking and QR code on their phone.
Do grandparents travelling with us need anything different?
No, adults of any age use the same documents. Older relatives are more likely to have a passport close to expiry or a long-unused one, so check it early. Make sure their name on the ticket and IMUGA matches their passport exactly, including bin or binti.
Does each family member need to queue separately at immigration?
Families usually go to the counter together, with each person's passport and QR code ready. Hand them over as a set, in the same order, so the officer can match passport to declaration quickly. Young children should be with you at the counter.
