Which type of Maldives holiday should you choose?

There are several very different ways to holiday in the Maldives, and the brochures blur them together.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

There are five main types. A local island guesthouse suits budget travellers and friend groups, a speedboat resort near Male suits short trips and first-timers, a seaplane or domestic-flight resort suits honeymoons and longer stays, a twin island trip combines a local island with a resort, and a liveaboard suits divers. Choose by budget, whether you need alcohol-free or resort privacy, and how many nights you have.

Five ways to holiday in the Maldives

Most Maldives trips fall into five types. Each has a different island, transfer, food arrangement and price, so picking the type first narrows everything else.

This page is part of our Start Here hub. If you are still deciding between the two main styles, read the luxury resort versus local island comparison next.

Package figures are advertised Malaysian prices checked in October 2026. The basis varies by seller, so confirm what each includes.

Step 1: start with budget per person

If your budget is under about RM 3,000 per person including flights, a local island is the realistic choice. Guesthouse doubles run about USD 60 to 180 a night before tax, and the speedboat to Maafushi is about USD 25 each way.

Between about RM 4,000 and RM 8,000 per person, a speedboat resort or twin island trip fits. Above that, seaplane resorts and water villas open up. Our page on what makes a Maldives trip expensive shows the maths.

Step 2: check your flight and nights

All nonstop flights from Malaysia leave from Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia lands about 09:50 and Malaysia Airlines about 11:25, both early enough for a seaplane. Batik Air lands about 21:55, after seaplanes stop.

On a three-night trip, a speedboat resort or local island near Male gives you more beach time than a long seaplane transfer. With five nights or more, a remote resort or a twin island split becomes worth the travel.

Step 3: match the type to your group

  • Honeymoon couple: seaplane or speedboat resort, possibly with one water villa night.
  • Family with young children: speedboat resort with a kids club and beach villas.
  • Friends on a budget: local island guesthouse, with day trips to a sandbank or resort.
  • Older parents: speedboat resort near Male with a morning flight.
  • Divers: local island dive centre or liveaboard.
  • Muslim travellers wanting no alcohol nearby: local island, or a resort that confirms halal food and prayer arrangements.

If one of you wants luxury and the other adventure, read what to do when travellers want different trips.

What a day looks like in each type

On a local island guesthouse stay, you eat breakfast at the guesthouse, join a shared boat trip for snorkelling or a sandbank, and walk to a local cafe for dinner. Evenings are quiet, with no bars, and Fridays are slower because many shops close around midday for prayers.

At a resort near Male, the day is built around the beach, the pool and the house reef. Meals happen at resort restaurants, and you can book a spa, sunset cruise or snorkel trip at the activity desk.

At a remote seaplane resort the rhythm is similar, but the island is often quieter and the reefs further from Male. Arrival day goes to the seaplane, so a short stay loses proportionally more time.

On a twin island trip you get one of each, with a speedboat or seaplane day in the middle. On a liveaboard, days follow the dive plan, with two or three dives and meals on the boat.

Step 4: decide what you will not compromise on

Write down the one thing that must be right. For some it is privacy, for others halal food, a kids club, a reef off the beach, or the overwater villa.

That single priority usually settles the type. For example, wanting a drink at sunset rules out a local island, while wanting to meet Maldivians rules out a private resort.

When a different choice works better

If the overwater villa is the only reason you want a resort, a split stay may suit you better. See whether you need a water villa.

If you are unsure, the twin island format is a sensible first trip because it lets you try both styles. Once you have chosen, the first-time traveller checklist covers what to sort before you fly. Package prices on this page were checked in October 2026 and will change.

Questions travellers ask

Can I mix two types in one trip?
Yes. A twin island trip, for example two nights on Maafushi and two at a resort, is a common Malaysian package format. It gives you local life and cheaper nights plus a few resort days. The trade-off is an extra transfer day, so it works best with four nights or more.
Which type is best for older parents?
A speedboat resort near Male usually suits older travellers best, because the transfer is short, there is no seaplane baggage limit to manage, and everything is on one island. Choose a morning flight from Kuala Lumpur and a resort with level paths and a short walk to the restaurant.
Is a liveaboard suitable for a first-time visitor?
Only if diving or snorkelling is the main reason for the trip. A liveaboard moves between dive sites, with cabins and shared meals on board. Non-divers and anyone prone to seasickness usually enjoy a resort or local island more.
Which type works for a halal-conscious family?
Local islands have no alcohol and many halal-friendly cafes, though you dress modestly outside bikini beaches. Many resorts also serve halal food on request and some Malaysian packages are sold as Muslim tours. Ask the resort directly about halal certification and prayer space.
