When to go

Best time to visit the Maldives from Malaysia

You have leave to plan, maybe a school calendar to work around, and you want the weather odds on your side without overpaying.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20264 min

Quick answer

For the best odds of calm, sunny days, go between January and April, during the drier northeast monsoon. For better value and fewer crowds, May to November usually costs less, with more showers and rougher seas on some days. Families tied to Malaysian school holidays should treat March, late May to early June, and late August as the realistic windows, and pick a transfer that copes with weather.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

January to April gives the best odds of dry, sunny days and calm seas. This is the northeast monsoon (Iruvai), which Visit Maldives describes as the dry season from December to April.

The wetter southwest monsoon (Hulhangu) runs roughly May to November. Showers are more frequent and some days are windy, but rain often passes quickly and temperatures barely change.

There is no "bad" month for everyone. The right month is the one that matches your goal, your leave and your budget. Our When to Visit hub collects every month and season page in one place.

Pick your month by goal: a decision table

Use this table to match your priority to a window. It is a planning rule of thumb, not a forecast.

Your main goalBest windowTrade-off to accept
Calmest seas and most sunshineJanuary to MarchHighest prices, earliest booking
Honeymoon on a mid budgetLate April, or May with flexible plansMore cloud risk, better value
School-tied familyMarch break, late May to early June, late AugustPeak Malaysian demand on flights
Manta rays at HanifaruRoughly June to NovemberWetter season, boat trips may be cancelled
Whale sharks in South AriAugust to November for peak sightingsChoppier crossings on some days
Lowest total costJune to September, outside Malaysian holidaysShowers, some rough transfer days

If two goals clash, decide which one you would regret losing. Most couples choose weather. Most divers choose the wildlife season.

How the two seasons feel on the ground

The temperature hardly moves. The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) reports daytime highs of about 30 to 31 C and night lows of about 24 to 26 C for most of the year.

What changes is wind, cloud and sea state. In the drier months the water is usually flatter, which helps nervous swimmers, young children and seaplane schedules.

In the wetter months a typical day may mix bright spells with a heavy shower or two. Some days are grey throughout. Windier days can make boat trips bumpier and occasionally cancel excursions.

The switch between seasons is not a fixed date. In 2026, MET announced the southwest monsoon reaching the southern atolls on about 8 May, spreading north later in the month (Atoll Times, 10 May 2026).

How Malaysian school and public holidays change the answer

For families, the school calendar often decides the month before the weather does. The 2027 calendar from KPM (via ecentral.my) gives these Group B breaks:

  • First-term break: 6 to 14 March 2027, in the drier season.
  • Mid-year holiday: 22 May to 6 June 2027, just after the wet season begins.
  • Second-term break: 28 August to 5 September 2027, in the wet season.
  • Year-end holiday: from 4 December 2027, as the drier season starts.

Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu) usually start a day earlier. Flights from KUL fill quickly in these weeks, so book early. See our page on Malaysian school holidays versus Maldives peak pricing for the cost side.

Does the season change what it costs?

Yes, usually. Many resorts and Malaysian agencies price the drier months highest. One example: AF Travel's 4D3N Le Meridien Thilamaafushi package (checked 11 Oct 2026) lists RM8,956 per adult twin share for 11 January to 14 April 2027 and RM7,936 for 15 April to 30 September 2027.

That is RM1,020 less per adult, or RM2,040 for a couple, for the same package in the wetter months. Flights are excluded, and rates change, so treat it as a pattern rather than a quote.

Run your own numbers with the trip cost calculator, and read when the Maldives is cheapest without compromising too much.

Transfers: the part of the weather that affects your schedule

Rain on the beach is a mood problem. Rough seas or low cloud on transfer day is a schedule problem.

Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset, and Trans Maldivian says to land in Male by about 15:30 to reach a seaplane resort the same day. From KUL, AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrive in time. Batik Air (about 21:55) needs a night near the airport.

In the wetter months, a speedboat resort near Male, or a buffer night in Hulhumale before flying home, lowers the risk of a missed connection.

Who each season suits best

The drier months suit first-timers, honeymooners who want photos with clear skies, grandparents and families with small children who need calm water. They also suit anyone with only four nights, where a lost day hurts more.

The wetter months suit flexible travellers, divers chasing mantas or whale sharks, budget-minded couples and anyone happy to read on a covered deck during a shower. A seven-night stay absorbs a grey day more easily than a 4D3N.

Questions travellers ask

Is there a month when the Maldives is guaranteed to be sunny?
No. Even January to March, the driest stretch, can bring a grey day or a passing storm. What changes between seasons is the odds, not a promise. Plan a trip that still works on a cloudy day, for example a resort with a good house reef or indoor options, and avoid packing every boat excursion into the last day so you have room to reschedule.
Which month is cheapest for Malaysians?
Resort and package prices usually dip in the wetter months, and Malaysian agency packages often show lower rates from mid-April or May to September than from January to mid-April. Airfares follow Malaysian demand as well, so school holidays and long weekends can push fares up even in the wet season. Compare the same resort across two date ranges before deciding.
Is the best time different for divers and snorkellers?
Often, yes. Manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll happen roughly June to November, and whale shark sightings in South Ari peak from August to November, both in the wetter season. Calm-water snorkelling for beginners usually suits the drier months better. Decide whether wildlife or calm seas matters more, then choose the month.
How far ahead should I book for the drier months?
For January to April, especially around Chinese New Year and the March school break, book flights and rooms several months ahead because both Malaysian and European demand is high. For a specific villa type at a popular resort, earlier is better. Wet-season trips usually have more flexibility, though school holidays still fill seats on the KUL to Male flights.
