The two seasons in plain terms
The Maldives has two monsoons. The northeast monsoon, called Iruvai, runs roughly from December to April and is the drier season.
The southwest monsoon, called Hulhangu, runs roughly from May to November and is the wetter season (Maldives Meteorological Service, Visit Maldives). The month boundaries are approximate and shift a little from year to year.
What stays constant is heat. Daytime highs sit around 30 to 31 C and nights around 24 to 26 C for most of the year. The best time to visit guide and the when to visit hub break this down month by month.
What actually changes between seasons
This table sets out the realistic differences. It describes typical patterns, not a forecast.
| Factor | Dry season (about Dec to Apr) | Wet season (about May to Nov) |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | Fewer rainy days, showers still possible | More showers, some stormy spells |
| Sky | More clear, calm days | More cloud, sunny breaks common |
| Wind and sea | Calmer on most days | Breezier, choppier channels |
| Temperature | Highs about 30 to 31 C | Highs about 30 to 31 C |
| Prices | Higher, festive peaks late Dec and early Jan | Usually lower |
| Malaysian school breaks | Year-end (Dec), first-term (Mar) | Mid-year (late May to early Jun), second-term (late Aug) |
| Transfers | Fewer weather holds | More bumpy boats and seaplane waits |
What does not change
Some things are the same in both seasons, and they are worth remembering when a forecast app shows rain icons all week.
The water stays warm all year. Resorts run as normal, with spas, pools and restaurants open, though some schedule maintenance in quieter months.
The rules stay the same: visa on arrival, the IMUGA declaration, taxes and the seaplane daylight rule. Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset in every season (Trans Maldivian Airways).
Realistic wet-season expectations
A wet-season week often brings a mix: a few bright days, a few cloudy ones and passing showers. A stormy spell can bring a run of grey, wet days, which is the main risk.
Visit Maldives frames rain as part of the experience, with spa time, slow meals and watching storms over the sea. That framing suits couples and readers more than families with active children.
Choppier seas matter more than rain for many trips. Boat excursions may be cancelled, speedboat rides feel rougher, and seasick-prone travellers should favour short transfers. Read is the Maldives rainy season a good time for a holiday for the full case.
Realistic dry-season expectations
The dry season gives better odds, not a guarantee. Showers still happen, and December can start wet before settling.
The trade-off is cost and crowds. Christmas, New Year and some other peak periods carry festive surcharges, and the best rooms go early. Families tied to the December school break face both higher prices and higher demand.
How the seasons line up with Malaysian holidays
For many Malaysian families, the calendar decides the season. The 2027 school calendar from the KPM, summarised by ecentral.my, puts the first-term break on 6 to 14 March for Group B states, inside the dry season.
The mid-year break runs from 22 May to 6 June 2027 for Group B, and the second-term break from 28 August to 5 September. Both fall in the wet season, which usually means lower prices but more weather risk.
The year-end break starts on 4 December 2027 for Group B, at the turn of the season. Group A states (Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu) usually start a day earlier.
A decision rule for Malaysians
Use this rule to pick a season:
- If you must travel in school holidays, your season is set by the calendar. Choose early December for drier odds at moderate prices, or the mid-year break for lower prices with more weather risk.
- If you are flexible and weather matters most, aim for January to April.
- If budget matters most and you can enjoy a slower trip, the wet season gives better value.
- If you are prone to seasickness, favour the dry season or a resort with a short speedboat ride.
- If a wildlife goal drives the trip, check its season first, then accept the weather that comes with it.
Who each season suits
The dry season suits honeymooners wanting the best photo odds, families on the year-end break and older travellers who prefer calmer seas. Expect to book earlier and pay more.
The wet season suits budget-minded couples, adult groups, readers and spa lovers, and divers following wet-season marine life. For transfer concerns specifically, see does bad weather affect Maldives seaplanes, and work out costs with the trip cost guide.
