When to go

Maldives weather by month, a complete guide for Malaysians

You have a rough window for leave and want to see the whole year at a glance before you commit to dates.

Last reviewed 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Maldives weather stays warm all year, with daytime highs around 30 to 31 C. January to March is usually the driest and calmest, April is a hot transition month, May to November is the wetter southwest monsoon with more showers and windier days, and December starts the change back to drier weather. Monthly patterns are tendencies, not promises, so plan transfers and activities with some flexibility.

How does Maldives weather change through the year?

The Maldives has two monsoons and two short changeovers. Heat is constant: the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) reports daytime highs of about 30 to 31 C and night lows of about 24 to 26 C across most months.

Rain, wind and sea state are what move. The northeast monsoon (Iruvai) brings the driest, calmest spell, roughly December to April. The southwest monsoon (Hulhangu) brings more showers and wind, roughly May to November.

For the decision itself, our best time to visit from Malaysia page weighs weather against price and school holidays. This page is the reference year, and the When to Visit hub links every season page.

The year at a glance

This table summarises the usual pattern and the Malaysian calendar beside it. "Rain risk" is our plain-language reading of the monsoon pattern, not a measured figure.

The drier months, January to April

These are the months with the best odds of blue skies and flat lagoons. They are also the busiest and usually the most expensive at resorts.

April is often the hottest-feeling month, with high humidity and very little breeze. It is still a good month, just a sticky one.

The wetter months, May to November

The southwest monsoon is not constant rain. It usually means more cloud, short heavy showers and some windy days, with sunny breaks in between.

The onset is gradual. In 2026, MET judged the monsoon to have reached the southern atolls on about 8 May, using rain and wind thresholds at southern stations, and it then spread north.

These months also hold the main wildlife seasons. Manta gatherings at Hanifaru Bay run roughly June to November, and whale shark sightings in South Ari peak from August to November, per Visit Maldives.

What weather means for transfers

Weather matters most on the two days you move. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and a storm or low cloud can hold them on the water.

Speedboats keep running in most showers but can be delayed in strong wind and swell. In the wetter months, choose transfers and flight times with a margin. Our page on whether bad weather affects seaplanes explains the trade-offs.

How to use this guide

Pick two or three candidate months from the table. Check which Malaysian holidays fall inside them, since those move airfares more than the weather does.

Then compare the same resort across those months. If the cheaper month is in the wet season, decide whether a longer stay or a closer transfer offsets the extra weather risk. Our page on dry season versus wet season expectations helps set realistic hopes.

Why monthly averages can mislead

Averages hide the spread between years. One October can be unusually dry and the next unusually wet, and a single storm can deliver much of a month's rain in a day or two.

The MMS monthly reports show this clearly: they compare each month with its long-term normal, and the gap in a single month can be large. Treat any month as a range of likely outcomes.

Influencer videos have the same problem in reverse. A sunny clip from August proves that August can be sunny, not that it usually is. Our page on judging weather claims explains how to read them.

Who should be strict about the month

Be strict if you have only four nights, a fixed photo plan, young children who need calm water, or an older traveller who finds rough boat rides hard. The drier months reduce the chance of a wasted day.

Be flexible if you are staying a week or more, diving, or travelling on a tight budget. A grey afternoon costs less when you have more days to spare.

Questions travellers ask

Why don't you list rainfall in millimetres for each month?
Published monthly rainfall figures for Male vary a lot between sources, stations and years, and we could not verify a long-term official table. A single wet year can double a month's total. We prefer a reliable pattern you can plan around over a precise number that may mislead. Check the Maldives Meteorological Service forecast in the week before you fly.
Is the weather the same in every atoll?
Broadly similar, but not identical. The southwest monsoon reaches the southern atolls first, usually in early May, and spreads north over the following weeks. The far south, around Addu, sits near the equator and can feel less seasonal. Ask your resort about local patterns if you are choosing between atolls.
Does the sea get too cold to swim in any month?
No. The Maldives is close to the equator and the sea stays warm all year, so a rash guard is for sun protection rather than warmth. What changes is surface conditions. Windier months can bring choppier water and currents on exposed reefs, so follow resort advice on where and when to snorkel.

How we research and check facts

Once you have narrowed the year to two or three possible months, the trade-off is usually price against weather odds. Send us your trip brief with those dates, and we reply with options for each.

Want options that fit your dates and budget?

Share a short trip brief: when you want to go, who is travelling and the budget you have in mind. We reply with suitable island and resort options and an itemised view of costs.
