Maldives in April, weather and holiday trade-offs

April sits between the dry and wet seasons, so it can give you dry-season weather at the start of shoulder-season prices.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 11 October 20263 min

Quick answer

April is usually hot, humid and still fairly dry in the Maldives, with calm seas for most of the month and more chance of afternoon showers towards the end. Many resorts switch from high-season to lower rates in mid-April. There is no Malaysian school break or federal holiday in April 2027, so couples and adults using annual leave get some of the best weather-for-money of the year.

Is April a good time to visit the Maldives?

Yes, for most adults. April is the transition at the end of the northeast monsoon. It is usually still fairly dry with calm seas, though showers become more likely towards the end of the month.

It is also the hottest-feeling month, with highs around 31 C, according to Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) reports, and high humidity. The upside is price: many resorts step down from their high-season rate in mid-April.

Worked example: early April versus late April

The clearest April decision is which side of the mid-month price change you travel. Here is one published package as an example.

Item1 to 14 April 202715 to 30 April 2027
AF Travel 4D3N Le Meridien Thilamaafushi, per adult twin shareRM8,956RM7,936
Couple (x 2)RM17,912RM15,872
Difference for a coupleRM2,040 less

Source: AF Travel package page, checked 11 Oct 2026. Flights are excluded, and rates may change before you book.

The weather difference between the two halves is small: a little more cloud and shower risk late in the month. For most couples, RM2,040 buys more than that extra risk costs. Check whether your chosen resort has a similar date break.

What the weather is like in April

Mornings are usually bright and still. The northeast breeze that cools January and February tends to drop, so afternoons can feel heavy.

Sea conditions are usually calm, which suits snorkelling and transfers. Towards late April, an afternoon thunderstorm becomes more common, often short and followed by clear skies.

The southwest monsoon normally arrives in May, not April. In 2026, MET placed the southern onset at about 8 May (Atoll Times).

April and the Malaysian calendar

April 2027 has no federal public holiday and no school break, based on the Human Resources Online federal list and the KPM calendar. That keeps Malaysian demand on KUL to Male flights lower than in March.

The flip side is that families with school-age children cannot travel without missing classes. Parents of preschool children, however, may find April one of the best months overall.

Handling the heat

Heat is the main April challenge, not rain. Choose a room with good air conditioning, shade on the deck and, if the budget allows, a private pool.

Plan snorkelling and beach time before 11am and after 4pm. Drink water steadily, use reef-safe sunscreen and wear a rash guard in the water. Older travellers should pace boat trips, since waiting on an exposed jetty in midday sun is tiring.

Transfers in April

Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset only. Land in Male by about 15:30 to reach a seaplane resort the same day, which the morning AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines flights from KUL allow.

Late-April afternoon storms can occasionally delay a seaplane by an hour or two. If you land at midday, ask the resort for the earliest transfer rather than a late-afternoon slot.

Local islands in April

April is a comfortable month for a guesthouse stay on an inhabited island such as Maafushi or Thoddoo. Ferry and speedboat crossings are usually calm, and excursions run on most days.

Remember the local-island dress code in the heat. Shoulders and knees should be covered in the village, and swimwear belongs on the designated bikini beach. Light, loose cotton or linen is the easiest choice.

Guesthouses charge a lower Green Tax than resorts: USD 6 per guest per night against USD 12, under MIRA rules. On a hot April trip, ask whether your room has reliable air conditioning, since smaller properties vary.

Who April suits best

April suits honeymooners, couples, adult friend groups and parents of babies or preschoolers. It is a strong first-trip month for travellers who want good odds at a softer price.

It suits less well families tied to the school calendar, and people who struggle in humid heat. If you want calmer, cooler-feeling days and can pay more, choose February. If budget leads, compare May and our shoulder season planning page.

Questions travellers ask

Is April the hottest month in the Maldives?
April often feels like the hottest month, because air temperatures are near their peak, humidity is high and the steady northeast breeze has faded. Daytime highs stay around 31 C. The heat is manageable with shade, water and air conditioning, but plan outdoor activities for mornings and late afternoons, especially with children or older relatives.
Will the monsoon have started by late April?
Usually not. The southwest monsoon is normally declared in May, starting with the southern atolls. In 2026 MET placed the southern onset at about 8 May. Late April can still bring more showers and cloud as the season changes, so it is a little less predictable than February or March.
Is April good for a honeymoon?
April is one of the strongest honeymoon months for Malaysian couples. You keep a good chance of calm, bright weather for photos, and many resorts move to lower rates from mid-month. There are no school holidays in April 2027, so resorts are less crowded with families. Book the second half of the month for the best balance.
