Airport transfers

Domestic flight plus speedboat Maldives transfers explained

Distant atolls are reached by a second, smaller flight and a boat, which suits some trips far better than a seaplane.

Quick answer

For resorts and islands in distant atolls, you check in again at Velana's domestic terminal, fly about 20 minutes to an hour to a regional airport, then take a speedboat to your island. Third-party guides put this at about USD 350 to 520 per adult return. Expect a 20 kg checked bag limit on domestic flights, and allow time between your international arrival and the domestic departure.

How the route works

A domestic flight plus speedboat transfer has three legs: a second check-in at Velana, a short scheduled flight to a regional airport, and a boat from that airport to your island.

The resort or guesthouse usually books all three legs and charges them as one transfer price. You only see the airline name on your tags and boarding pass.

This is one of three ways to reach your island. For the overview, see Maldives airport transfers explained or the transfers hub.

Who flies where

Two local airlines run most domestic routes. Maldivian, the state carrier, and Manta Air both fly turboprop aircraft to regional airports across the country.

Manta Air flies to airports such as Dharavandhoo in Baa atoll and Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu. Maamigili in South Ari is used by resorts and by travellers heading to Dhigurah.

The full network changes as airports open and routes are added. Your resort will name the airport and airline in its transfer details, which is the version to trust.

Arrival day timeline

This example uses the AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur landing about 09:50 Maldives time. Times after landing are planning estimates.

Time (Maldives)Step
About 09:50Land at Velana
About 09:50 to 10:50Immigration and baggage
About 11:00Meet resort host, walk to domestic terminal
About 11:15Domestic check-in, bags weighed
Allocated slotDomestic flight, about 20 minutes to 1 hour
On landingSpeedboat to the island, often 10 to 45 minutes

Some third-party guides suggest at least two hours between an international arrival and a domestic departure. Treat that as a sensible minimum, and longer with children.

The bag limit is the common surprise

Domestic flights in the Maldives commonly allow about 20 kg checked per person. That figure comes from third-party guides, so confirm it on your ticket.

Malaysian travellers often fly in on fares with 30 kg or more. Unpacking at the domestic counter is stressful, so pack to the domestic allowance from home, or ask the resort for the excess rate in advance.

A HolidayGoGoGo package to Canareef Resort in Addu, which includes the domestic flight, listed a 20 kg plus 5 kg allowance (checked 11 Oct 2026). That matches what most travellers should expect.

Cost: a worked example for a family

Third-party benchmarks put domestic flight plus boat at about USD 350 to 520 per adult return. Children aged 2 to 11 often pay around 30% to 40% less, though this varies by resort.

Why some travellers prefer it to a seaplane

Domestic flights use lit runways, so later departures can be possible. That can rescue a same-day arrival that would miss the seaplane cut-off, though the final boat may still have its own limits.

The aircraft are larger and feel more familiar to nervous flyers. Travellers who dislike small seaplanes often find this route easier.

Read whether seaplanes operate after dark if your flight lands in the afternoon or later.

Who it suits, and when to choose differently

The route suits divers and surfers heading to distant atolls, families who want a far-flung resort without seaplane bag limits, and travellers staying a week or more.

It suits short trips less well. Two check-ins and a boat can take most of a day, which matters on a three-night stay. A near-Male speedboat resort is usually a better fit there.

It also suits less well when someone is prone to seasickness and the final boat leg is long. Ask for the boat time from the regional airport before choosing.

What to confirm before you book

  • The airline, regional airport and boat time to the island.
  • The checked and hand baggage allowance on the domestic leg.
  • The latest international landing time that still connects.
  • Whether the resort arranges a Hulhumale night if you miss the last flight.
  • The departure-day flight time, so it connects to your flight home.

Questions travellers ask

Does my international baggage get checked through to the domestic flight?
Usually not. Most travellers collect bags after immigration and then check them in again at the domestic terminal, with the resort host helping. Ask your resort whether it uses a through-check arrangement, and pack to the domestic limit rather than the international one.
Is a domestic flight cheaper than a seaplane?
Often a little, but not always. Third-party benchmarks put domestic flight plus boat at about USD 350 to 520 per adult return and shared seaplanes at about USD 400 to 820. The bigger difference is that domestic flights can operate in darkness, which can save a night near the airport.
Can I fly to a domestic airport and stay on a local island?
Yes. Some guesthouse travellers fly to Maamigili for Dhigurah or to Dharavandhoo for Baa atoll, then take a local boat. Fares and timings for these flights change, so confirm them directly with the airline or your guesthouse before booking your international flight.
Is the second flight on a small aircraft?
Domestic routes are flown on turboprop aircraft such as the ATR and Dash 8, which seat dozens of passengers. They use runways rather than water, so the experience feels like a short regional flight rather than a seaplane.
