Eating on Thoddoo: food planning for independent travellers

You are travelling independently to Thoddoo and want to know how to eat well without many restaurants to choose from.

Last reviewed 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Thoddoo has a small number of local restaurants and guesthouse kitchens, plus shops for basics and plenty of island-grown fruit. Independent travellers usually take breakfast at their guesthouse, add a half board dinner or eat at one of the few cafes, and buy fruit from farms or stalls. Bring US dollars in small notes, since travel guides say many businesses prefer cash and only one ATM has been reported.

The short answer

Thoddoo is a quiet farming island with only a few places to eat. Plan on guesthouse breakfasts, a mix of guesthouse dinners and local cafes, and fresh fruit from the island's farms.

Food is halal by default and alcohol is not sold. This page sits in the food and everyday life hub, and the Thoddoo travel guide covers the island itself.

What food you will find

Guesthouses usually include breakfast, and many can cook dinner for guests on request. A handful of local restaurants serve Maldivian curries, grilled fish, fried rice and noodles.

Thoddoo is known for its farms. Papaya, watermelon and passion fruit are among the crops travel guides mention, and fruit often appears at breakfast.

Local shops sell drinks, bread, eggs, snacks and basics. Choice is narrower than on Maafushi or in Male.

Pre-arrival food checklist for independent travellers

Send these to your guesthouse before you pay, and keep the replies.

  1. Is breakfast included, and what time does it start?
  2. Can you cook dinner for guests, and what does a set dinner cost?
  3. Which restaurants on the island are open in my travel month?
  4. Can you prepare a packed breakfast for an early boat?
  5. Do you accept cards, or should I bring US dollars?
  6. Is there a fridge or kettle guests can use?

Cash and paying for food

Travel guides report one Bank of Maldives ATM near the harbour, and say many businesses prefer US dollars to cards. That information is several years old, so ask your guesthouse whether the ATM works.

Withdraw rufiyaa or carry US dollars in small notes before leaving Velana airport. Small notes make paying cafes and fruit sellers easier.

Half board or eat out? A decision rule

  1. Short stay, adventurous eater: breakfast only, try the cafes.
  2. Four nights or more: add half board, or book guesthouse dinners on alternate nights.
  3. Dietary needs or children: half board, agreed in writing.
  4. Early boat home: arrange a packed breakfast the night before.

Making simple food enjoyable

Try Maldivian dishes rather than waiting for Western ones. Mas huni with roshi, fish curry and garudhiya are what local kitchens do best, as explained in our guide to what to eat in the Maldives.

Ask your host about a beach dinner or a fruit tasting from a nearby farm. Pack a few sealed comfort foods from Malaysia, without pork, for nights when choice feels thin.

Water and drinks

Buy bottled water from local shops, or ask whether your guesthouse provides drinking water in rooms. Fresh juice from island fruit is common at cafes and guesthouses, and young coconut is easy to find. There is no alcohol on Thoddoo.

Fridays, prayer times and boat days

On Fridays, some cafes and shops close around midday for prayers. Plan lunch at your guesthouse that day.

The return speedboat to Male has been reported around 07:00. Buy bread, fruit and water the day before in case breakfast is not ready.

Families, older travellers and dietary needs

Families should choose a guesthouse that cooks for guests every day, since cafe choice is too thin to rely on with fussy children. Pack familiar snacks and any baby food from Malaysia.

Older travellers often prefer half board, so dinner is at the guesthouse and there is no evening walk to find food. Ask for meals with less chilli if needed.

Vegetarians and people with allergies need the most planning here. Send your needs in writing, and read where to find vegetarian food on Maldives islands.

Who this suits

Thoddoo suits independent travellers, couples and slow travellers who enjoy simple, fresh food and a village pace. Travellers who want lots of restaurants should consider eating on Maafushi instead.

Couples deciding between quiet islands can compare Dhigurah versus Thoddoo for a couple.

Questions travellers ask

Can I cook my own food on Thoddoo?
Most guesthouse rooms do not have kitchens, so self-catering is limited. Some hosts may let you use a kettle or fridge, and a few properties may offer more. Ask before you book. Shops sell basics such as bread, eggs, snacks and drinks, which help for simple breakfasts or boat-day lunches.
Can I buy fruit directly from farmers?
Travel guides describe Thoddoo as a farming island growing papaya, watermelon, passion fruit and other crops. Your guesthouse can usually point you to farms or stalls that sell to visitors. Only buy where something is clearly for sale, and do not pick fruit from fields without asking.
What should I eat on the early boat day home?
Return boats to Male have been reported around 07:00, which may be before breakfast starts. Ask your guesthouse the night before for a packed breakfast or early tea. Buy some bread, fruit and water the day before as a backup.
Is Thoddoo good for a budget traveller who eats out every meal?
It can be, but choice is narrow, so you may eat at the same few places. Many budget travellers find a half board guesthouse plan good value here. Compare the plan's price with what local cafes charge on arrival and keep cash ready.
