Eydhafushi island guide for Malaysians: Baa Atoll's capital as a base

You noticed Eydhafushi on the Baa Atoll map and wonder whether the atoll capital makes sense as a holiday base.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20263 min

Quick answer

Eydhafushi is the capital of Baa Atoll and home to Baa Atoll Hospital, so it is a busy town island with services rather than a beach island. Most visitors fly from Male to Dharavandhoo (about 30 to 40 minutes) and take a 20 to 30 minute speedboat. It suits travellers who want town comforts and a base for Baa excursions; beach-first travellers usually prefer Dharavandhoo, Kamadhoo or Fulhadhoo.

Eydhafushi is where Baa Atoll does its business. It is the atoll capital, with the atoll hospital, offices, banks and a busier street life than the small guesthouse islands around it.

That makes it a practical base, not a classic beach holiday. This page explains what the island is like, how to get there and who it suits. For local-island basics, read the beginner guide to Maldives local islands or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Eydhafushi?

Eydhafushi is an inhabited local island and the capital of Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve north-west of Male. It is a working town: government offices, schools, mosques, shops and cafes.

Baa Atoll Hospital is here and serves the whole atoll. The government broke ground on a new 50-bed hospital building in November 2025, according to PSM News, because the existing hospital is crowded.

How it compares with other Baa islands

The choice in Baa is usually about what you want from your days. This table sums up the trade-offs using our island profiles.

How do you get to Eydhafushi?

The common route is a domestic flight from Velana airport to Dharavandhoo, about 30 to 40 minutes, then a speedboat of about 20 to 30 minutes. A 2026 Dharavandhoo guide reported the flight at about USD 85 to 135 per person one way; a 2026 guesthouse listing estimated the shared boat at USD 20 to 40 per person.

Guesthouses arrange the boat leg on request, usually for an extra charge. Listings also mention a direct speedboat from Male of about 1.5 to 2 hours, but no fare or timetable was confirmed.

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals leave time for an afternoon flight north. A Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 means a night in Hulhumale first. See Maldives airport transfers explained.

Where to stay and what it costs

Few Eydhafushi guesthouses are listed online. One example is Ale Sara Guest, a four-room guesthouse with indicative rates from about USD 60 a night from May to October and USD 80 from November to April (April 2026 listing, before tax).

Add about 28.7% for service charge and GST, plus Green Tax of USD 6 per person per night (MIRA). On a USD 80 room for two, that is about USD 80 + 23 + 12 = USD 115 a night, roughly RM 470 at RM 4.09 per USD. Check your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.

What to do

Activities on Eydhafushi itself centre on town life: cafes, the mosques and walks around the harbour. Reef trips, sandbanks and seasonal Hanifaru snorkelling are arranged through dive centres and excursion operators in the atoll.

Ask your guesthouse which operators it uses and how long the boat to each site takes. Read when to visit Hanifaru Bay before picking dates.

Customs, money and health

Dress modestly in town: cover shoulders and knees. There is no alcohol on the island. Fridays are quieter around midday prayers.

A 2026 guesthouse listing mentions ATMs and pharmacies on the island; still bring some USD cash. The hospital makes Eydhafushi one of the better-served islands in Baa for medical care, though complex cases may still go to Male.

What to ask your guesthouse before you book

Because little about Eydhafushi is published online, a short checklist saves surprises.

  • Transfer: the boat price from Dharavandhoo per person or per boat, and who meets you at the airport.
  • Beach: where swimwear is allowed, and how far it is from the guesthouse.
  • Meals: whether breakfast is included and whether dinner is offered.
  • Trips: which licensed operator runs reef and Hanifaru trips, and the minimum group size.
  • Payment: cash or card, and any card fee.

Who Eydhafushi suits, and who should look elsewhere

Suits well: older travellers or families who value having a hospital close by, repeat Maldives visitors curious about everyday island life, and travellers using it as a stop on a Baa island-hop.

Look elsewhere if: you want a beach holiday or easy manta days. Dharavandhoo, Kamadhoo and Fulhadhoo fit those trips better.

Questions travellers ask

Does Eydhafushi have a bikini beach?
We could not confirm a designated bikini beach on Eydhafushi from a current source. A 2026 guesthouse listing mentions a Sunset Beach near the village but does not confirm swimwear rules. Ask your guesthouse in writing, or plan beach days on a resort or sandbank trip.
Is Eydhafushi a good base for Hanifaru Bay?
It can work, but Dharavandhoo and Kamadhoo are closer to the bay and better set up for manta trips. Eydhafushi makes more sense if you value town services such as the hospital, banks and cafes. Ask your guesthouse which operator runs the Hanifaru trips and how long the boat takes.
Is the food on Eydhafushi halal?
Eydhafushi is a Muslim community and alcohol and pork are not allowed on local islands, so cafe and guesthouse food generally follows local Muslim norms. As the atoll capital it has more cafes than most Baa islands. If you need formal certification, ask the venue directly.
Why stay on Eydhafushi rather than a smaller island?
The main reasons are services and convenience. The atoll hospital is here, there are more cafes and shops, and banking is easier. The trade-off is a busier, more urban feel and less beach.
