Kamadhoo is a good local-island choice for people who want to be in the water. The bikini beach runs straight onto the house reef, there is a PADI dive centre on the island, and Hanifaru Bay is a short boat ride away in season.
This page explains the island, transfers, a rough budget and who it suits. For local-island basics, read the beginner guide to Maldives local islands or browse the island directory.
What kind of island is Kamadhoo?
Kamadhoo is an inhabited local island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve north-west of Male. An April 2026 island guide puts the population at just over 550.
It is a small village island with a mosque, a health centre, a few cafes and about 11 guesthouses. It is quieter than a busy Kaafu island such as Maafushi, but large enough to have a dive centre and several excursion operators.
The beach and house reef
The bikini beach is on the southern side. The April 2026 guide describes wide white sand with palm shade, bathrooms, open showers and a yoga pavilion, and direct access to the house reef.
Reef sharks, turtles and eagle rays were mentioned on the reef. Swimwear is for the bikini beach only; in the village, cover shoulders and knees.
How do you get to Kamadhoo?
There are two practical routes, both reported in April 2026.
| Route | Time | Reported price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared speedboat from Male | 2 to 2.5 hrs | About USD 60 to 70 pp one way, taxes included | One departure about 12:30 to 13:00; return about 07:30; no Friday service |
| Flight to Dharavandhoo plus speedboat | 20 to 30 min flight, 15 to 20 min boat | About USD 180 to 185 pp one way in total | Several flights a day |
AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals usually make the midday boat. Batik Air (about 21:55) does not, so plan a night in Hulhumale. The early return boat usually leaves time for an afternoon flight home; confirm with your guesthouse.
See Maldives airport transfers explained for how the transfer modes compare.
What does a stay roughly cost?
For two adults, four nights, using RM 4.09 per USD. The room figure is the one advertised starting rate seen on Kamadhoo listings in April 2026 (USD 80), used as a planning number.
| Item | Basis | USD | RM (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room | USD 80 per night, 4 nights, before tax | 320 | 1,309 |
| Service charge and GST | About 28.7% on the room | 92 | 376 |
| Green Tax | USD 6 x 2 people x 4 nights | 48 | 196 |
| Shared speedboat return | USD 60 to 70 pp each way, x 2 x 2 | 240 to 280 | 982 to 1,145 |
| Total for two, before meals and flights | 700 to 740 | about 2,863 to 3,027 |
Flying to Dharavandhoo instead adds roughly USD 440 to 500 for two people return compared with the shared boat (USD 720 to 740 against USD 240 to 280). Add flights from KUL, meals and trips, and run your figures in the trip cost calculator.
Diving, snorkelling and mantas
Kamadhoo Dive and Water Sports, a PADI 5 Star centre, listed these prices in April 2026: Discover Scuba Diving USD 165, Open Water course USD 675, and snorkelling trips of about USD 100 for two hours. Check whether tax is included.
Hanifaru Bay is about 15 to 20 minutes away. It is snorkel only, with a licensed guide, roughly May to November, with peaks around July to October. Read when to visit Hanifaru Bay before choosing dates.
Other trips listed include sunset fishing, dolphin cruises and picnics on uninhabited islands.
Where to stay
About 11 guesthouses were listed in April 2026. Most are small (around 4 to 9 rooms), with a couple of larger ones: Cher Maldives with about 27 rooms and a pool, and Swarn By Hawks with about 19 rooms.
Ask how far the room is from the bikini beach, whether the guesthouse arranges Hanifaru trips, and whether meals are included.
Money, health and customs
A Bank of Maldives ATM opened in August 2025, according to the April 2026 guide; bring USD cash as back-up. The health centre handles basic needs, with serious cases sent to Eydhafushi or Male.
No alcohol on the island. Fridays are quieter around midday prayers. Green Tax at guesthouses of 50 rooms or fewer is USD 6 per person per night (MIRA).
Who Kamadhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
Suits well: snorkellers and divers, manta seekers in season, and couples who want reef time from the beach.
Families: good for swimming families; check life-jacket and age rules for boat trips.
Older travellers: the flight plus short boat is the gentler route if budget allows.
Look elsewhere if: you want the shortest possible transfer to Hanifaru (try Dharavandhoo), or a beach-only stay with long sandy walks (try Fulhadhoo).
