Dharavandhoo is the local island for people who come to the Maldives for manta rays. It sits in Baa Atoll, has its own airport, and Hanifaru Bay, one of the best-known manta feeding sites in the world, is a few minutes away by boat.
This page covers what the island is like, who it suits and how a stay works. For local islands in general, read the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, or browse other options in the island directory.
What kind of island is Dharavandhoo?
Dharavandhoo is an inhabited local island in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve north-west of Male. An April 2026 island guide puts the population at about 1,200.
It is a working village island, not a resort. There are sandy lanes, a mosque, small shops and cafes, a health centre and a pharmacy, and the domestic airport (DRV) sits on the island itself.
In late 2024 the island council launched "Visit Dharavandhoo Year 2025" with Visit Maldives, promoting guided marine tours, cooking classes and a planned Manta Centre. Local tourism here is growing but still small-scale.
Why do people choose Dharavandhoo?
The answer is Hanifaru Bay. During the southwest monsoon, currents push plankton into the bay and mantas gather to feed, sometimes in large numbers, with whale sharks seen at times.
From Dharavandhoo the boat ride is about five minutes. Resort guests in Baa often travel much further for the same snorkel, so a guesthouse here gives you more chances to be in the water when the mantas show.
| What you get | What you give up |
|---|---|
| Closest local base for Hanifaru | Resort pools, spas and bars |
| Guesthouse prices, not resort prices | A cheap boat transfer from Male |
| Several dive centres and manta cleaning stations | Variety of restaurants and nightlife |
| A real island community | Alcohol (not allowed on the island) |
For more on the bay itself, see manta ray watching at Hanifaru Bay.
When should you go?
Plan around the manta season. Sources put Hanifaru activity at roughly May to November, with the peak around July to October.
Manta numbers vary by day, tide and moon phase, so build in spare days. Four or five nights gives you several chances if one trip sees few mantas.
Outside the season, the island still offers diving and reef snorkelling, and visibility is usually better from December to April. The specific reason to choose Dharavandhoo over a Kaafu island, though, is the manta season. See when to visit Hanifaru Bay for timing detail.
How do you get there?
Most visitors fly. Maldivian and Manta Air run domestic flights from Velana airport to Dharavandhoo, about 35 to 50 minutes in the air, with several flights a day reported.
The last flight leaves Male around late afternoon, so a Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 means a night in Hulhumale first. AirAsia (about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals usually connect the same day.
Shared speedboats take about 2 to 4 hours and a cargo ferry about 8 hours, so they suit flexible travellers only. Full detail is on how to get to Dharavandhoo from Male airport.
Island customs for visitors
Dharavandhoo follows local island norms. In the village, cover shoulders and knees, and swimwear is for the bikini beach only.
The April 2026 guide describes the bikini beach as running along most of the north of the island, with sunbeds, hammocks and umbrellas. Confirm current rules with your guesthouse, since arrangements can change.
- No alcohol on the island; resort day trips are the only way to have a drink.
- Fridays are quieter around midday prayers, and some shops close.
- During Ramadan, cafes may keep shorter daytime hours.
- Muslim travellers will find the mosque within a short walk of any guesthouse.
Money, connectivity and health
Bring cash. The one ATM reported on the island is at the airport and dispenses rufiyaa, and US dollars are widely accepted. Card payments may carry a fee.
Mobile data coverage is reported as good; guesthouse Wi-Fi varies. The island has a health centre and pharmacy for minor issues, with serious cases sent to Male.
Where to stay
About 21 guesthouses were listed in April 2026, most with 5 to 7 rooms. Advertised starting rates seen on listing sites ran from about USD 60 to 150 per room per night before tax, and Green Tax of USD 6 per person per night is added at guesthouses this size.
Pick a guesthouse that runs its own Hanifaru trips or works closely with a dive centre. See Dharavandhoo guesthouses: how to choose and what a holiday on Dharavandhoo costs.
Who Dharavandhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
Suits well: snorkellers and divers timing a trip for mantas, couples who like quiet, and Muslim travellers comfortable with a simple village setting.
Families with children: fine for confident swimmers, but Hanifaru is open water with currents, so check minimum ages and life-jacket policy with the operator.
Older travellers: the flight is easier than a long speedboat, and the island is flat and walkable. Medical services are basic.
Look elsewhere if: you want a short, cheap first trip with no marine focus (try Maafushi), or you want resort comforts in Baa (compare a Baa resort with a Baa guesthouse).
Questions travellers ask
