Fehendhoo is about as small as a Maldivian local island gets. Around 198 people live here, the village takes minutes to cross on foot, and the main decisions of the day are which beach to sit on and when to snorkel.
This page explains what the island is like, how to get there, what a stay roughly costs and who it suits. For local-island basics, read the beginner guide to Maldives local islands or browse the island directory.
What kind of island is Fehendhoo?
Fehendhoo is an inhabited local island in the small Goidhoo atoll, also called Horsburgh Atoll, at the southern edge of Baa. Its neighbours are Goidhoo and Fulhadhoo.
An April 2026 island guide puts the population at about 198, with fishing, boat building and coconut growing still part of island life. A 2019 report in The Edition described the island as about 21 hectares, with landing by small boat at a traditional jetty.
There is a mosque, a health centre, a couple of small cafes and a handful of guesthouses. It is a village, not a resort.
The beaches
Fehendhoo has two designated bikini beaches, according to the April 2026 guide. One is a short walk from the village under palms; the larger one is at the far western end and good for sunsets, about a 30-minute walk.
Both were described with sunbeds, hammocks and umbrellas. Swimwear is for these beaches only. In the village, cover shoulders and knees.
How do you get to Fehendhoo?
The usual route is a shared speedboat from Male of about 2 to 2.5 hours. The April 2026 guide reported a daily departure at around 13:00 except Fridays, often stopping at Goidhoo, at about USD 65 to 75 per person one way.
AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals usually make that boat. Batik Air (about 21:55) does not, so plan a night in Hulhumale.
| Route | Time | Reported price (April 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Shared speedboat from Male | 2 to 2.5 hrs | About USD 65 to 75 pp one way |
| Flight to Dharavandhoo plus speedboat | 20 to 35 min flight, about 40 min boat | Flight about USD 95 to 100; boat about USD 70 pp shared or USD 150 to 200 private |
| Private speedboat | About 2 hrs | About USD 1,000 per trip |
| Public ferry via Goidhoo | About 8 hrs plus short boat | Not confirmed |
The same page quoted lower speedboat prices in another section, so confirm the fare with your guesthouse. See Maldives airport transfers explained for how the modes compare.
What does a stay roughly cost?
For two adults on four nights, a planning sum using the reported figures and RM 4.09 per USD looks like this.
| Item | Basis | USD | RM (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room | USD 80 per night, 4 nights, before tax | 320 | 1,309 |
| Service charge and GST | About 28.7% on the room | 92 | 376 |
| Green Tax | USD 6 x 2 people x 4 nights | 48 | 196 |
| Shared speedboat return | USD 65 to 75 pp each way, x 2 x 2 | 260 to 300 | 1,063 to 1,227 |
| Total for two, before meals and flights | 720 to 760 | about 2,945 to 3,108 |
USD 80 is the only advertised starting rate seen among Fehendhoo listings in April 2026, so treat it as a planning figure. Add flights, meals and trips, then check your own numbers in the trip cost calculator.
What is there to do?
The reef is the main activity. The April 2026 guide lists Atoll Aqua Blue for diving and water sports, plus a small dive centre and an excursion operator. Courses including Discover Scuba Diving were listed.
- House-reef snorkelling and kayaking to sandbanks.
- Dive sites such as Fehendhoo Caves and Madivaru Corner.
- Night fishing, with the catch often cooked at the guesthouse.
- Seasonal Hanifaru Bay trips for mantas. See when to visit Hanifaru Bay.
Small-island excursions often need a minimum number of guests, so confirm before you travel.
Where to stay
Nine guesthouses were listed in April 2026, from a single-room property to about nine rooms, including Isla Retreat, Sky Village and Atholhu Residence. With few cafes, choose a guesthouse that offers half or full board and can arrange the boat for you.
Money, health and customs
A Bank of Maldives ATM opened in August 2025, according to the April 2026 guide; still bring USD cash. The health centre covers basic needs, and serious cases go to Eydhafushi or Male.
There is no alcohol and no nightlife. Fridays are quiet around midday prayers. Green Tax at small guesthouses is USD 6 per person per night (MIRA).
Who Fehendhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
Suits well: couples who want privacy, divers, readers and anyone who finds busy islands tiring.
Families: fine for relaxed families with swimmers, but there is little for older children to do and medical help is basic.
Older travellers: flat and calm, but the long boat ride and small-boat landings can be tiring. Ask the guesthouse how luggage and landing are handled.
Look elsewhere if: you want more choice of beaches and cafes (try Fulhadhoo), or a short first trip near Male (try Maafushi).
Questions travellers ask
