Fuvahmulah guesthouses and accommodation: how to choose

You are choosing between dozens of Fuvahmulah guesthouses and want a clear way to pick one.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Fuvahmulah has about 25 guesthouses and no resort. Divers should pick the dive centre first and then a guesthouse it works with, since many properties are tied to an operator. Non-divers and families should prioritise location near the lakes or calm beaches, meals and transport. Small properties such as Holiday Home Fuvahmulah have just three rooms, so book early.

Fuvahmulah has no resort, so the guesthouse is your base for everything. With about 25 to choose from, a simple method saves hours.

The Fuvahmulah island guide explains the island. If you want resort nights as well, read the local island versus resort guide.

What are the options?

aMaldives lists about 25 guesthouses and shows details for twelve. We include only what the listing confirms.

"Listed only" means name only. Ask each property for room sizes, photos and the full price with taxes.

Divers: choose the dive centre first

Most diving days start early, and pickups depend on where you sleep. Pick your operator based on group size, safety briefings and tiger dive rules, then ask which guesthouses it works with.

Packages often bundle both. Liquid Shark Divers listed 5-night packages at USD 1,450 to 1,600 per person twin sharing for 2026, with the range depending on the hotel. The Fuvahmulah cost guide compares packages with booking separately.

Non-divers and families: choose location and meals

If no one dives, location matters more. Ask how far the guesthouse is from Thoondu beach, the Nature Park and the lakes, and whether bicycles or scooters are provided.

Families should ask about family rooms, meal times for children and a safe swimming spot. The sea around Fuvahmulah is open ocean, so the Nature Park and calm pools are the family-friendly options.

How to shortlist

Score each property on these points:

  • Partner dive centre and pickup time.
  • Airport pickup included or not.
  • Meals: breakfast, half board or full board.
  • Transport: free bicycles, scooter rental, taxi help.
  • Room size, family rooms and air-conditioning.
  • Total per night with 10% service, 17% GST and USD 6 Green Tax shown.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. Is the rate per room or per person, and are service charge, GST and Green Tax included?
  2. Do you meet the afternoon and late flights from Male?
  3. Which dive centre do you work with, and is there a package rate?
  4. Can you cook halal meals and adjust spice levels?
  5. What happens to my booking if the domestic flight changes?

The Green Tax explainer shows how the tax is charged.

Food and halal considerations

Fuvahmulah is a Muslim community, and pork and alcohol are not sold. Guesthouse kitchens cook Maldivian dishes, and many offer full board because restaurant choice is limited outside the main areas.

We did not find written halal certification from a Fuvahmulah guesthouse. If certification matters to you, ask the property directly.

Location and noise

The island is large, so ask where the guesthouse sits relative to the airport, your dive centre and the beaches you want. A short taxi ride is easy, but a long daily trip adds cost.

Rooms near a mosque hear the call to prayer, which many Malaysian guests find familiar. Ask about building work nearby if quiet matters.

Paying for your stay

Ask how the balance is paid before you arrive. aMaldives reports that US dollars are widely accepted, but small guesthouses may prefer cash or a bank transfer.

If you pay by card, ask whether a surcharge applies and which currency is charged. Keep the written confirmation, showing the total with taxes, for immigration and for check-out.

Which kind of guesthouse suits whom?

Solo divers and dive couples usually do best in a diver-focused guesthouse with early breakfasts and gear rinsing. Honeymooners may prefer a spa-branded guesthouse for a little more comfort. Families and older travellers should favour a ground-floor family room with full board and help with taxis.

When to book

Book early for the December to April season and Malaysian school holidays. Dive-focused guesthouses fill around peak shark and whale shark months.

Once your room is confirmed, check flights on the Fuvahmulah transfer guide.

Questions travellers ask

Are dive packages tied to one guesthouse?
Often. Operators such as Liquid Shark Divers price packages by hotel, with 5-night packages listed at USD 1,450 to 1,600 per person twin sharing in 2026. If you already know your dive centre, ask which guesthouses it partners with, as pickups and timing are easier.
Can I find a guesthouse with a pool or spa?
A few. aMaldives lists properties with spa in the name, such as Ataraxis Grand and Spa and Calyx Boutique and Spa. Ask for photos and confirm what the spa and any pool include, since facilities in guesthouses are smaller than at resorts.
Is it easy to change guesthouse mid-trip?
Yes, the island is large but taxis and scooters make moves simple. Some travellers spend a few dive nights near their operator, then move closer to Thoondu or the lakes. Check both properties' check-in and check-out times and Green Tax charges.
How do I check a guesthouse is registered?
Immigration asks for a confirmed booking at a registered tourist property. The Ministry of Tourism's registered facilities site blocked our check in October 2026. Ask the guesthouse for its registration number and keep the written confirmation with your passport on arrival.
