What is the fastest way from Male to Fuvahmulah?
Take the Maldivian domestic flight from Velana (MLE) to Fuvahmulah (FVM). Flight data sites give about 1 hour 20 to 25 minutes, and the island's dive centres say up to 2 hours when a stop is scheduled.
No other airline was listed on this route when we checked. There is no public ferry from Male, and a private speedboat over that distance is not a sensible option. For how this compares with seaplanes and speedboats elsewhere, see our Maldives airport transfers explained guide.
What times do flights run?
In March 2025, Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah listed two daily flights each way. Treat these as a guide only, since Maldivian changes its schedule:
| Direction | Departure times (Mar 2025) |
|---|---|
| Male to Fuvahmulah | 15:10 and 23:35 |
| Fuvahmulah to Male | 05:10 and 17:05 |
Check-in opens 2 hours before departure and closes 1 hour before, according to the same source. Ask your guesthouse or dive centre to confirm current times before you buy KLIA tickets.
Does it connect with flights from KLIA?
Usually yes for morning arrivals. The dive centre advises 3 to 4 hours between your international landing and the domestic departure.
| KLIA flight (approx. Male arrival) | Likely Fuvahmulah connection |
|---|---|
| AirAsia, lands about 09:50 | Afternoon flight the same day, with a long wait |
| Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25 | Afternoon flight the same day |
| Batik Air, lands about 21:55 | Only if a late flight runs that day; otherwise a night in Hulhumale |
On the way home, a morning flight from Fuvahmulah lands in Male in good time for the AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines afternoon departures. If only an evening flight suits, plan a night near the airport.
What does it cost?
Domestic fares are quoted in US dollars and change often. amaldives.com recorded about USD 193 one way on 12 April 2026, roughly RM789 at RM4.09 per USD (193 × 4.09).
Return travel is therefore about RM1,580 per person before any excess baggage, based on that single observation. Dive centres may book the ticket for you; one guide notes a booking fee for non-divers. Ask for a written quote that shows the fare, baggage and fees, then add it to the trip cost calculator.
Arrival day, step by step
Most Malaysians reach Fuvahmulah on the same day as the KLIA flight. This is how the day usually runs:
- Land at Velana and clear immigration with your IMUGA declaration and guesthouse booking.
- Collect your bags, then walk to the domestic terminal and check in when the counter opens, 2 hours before departure.
- Wait in the domestic area or a paid lounge; Pelagic Divers listed lounges at about USD 30 and USD 75 for 3 hours in March 2025.
- Fly about 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes to Fuvahmulah.
- Meet your guesthouse or dive centre at the airport for the short drive.
With a 15:10 flight, you arrive in the late afternoon and dive the next morning. On the way home, reverse the steps and keep the domestic and KLIA bookings at least three hours apart.
Baggage for divers
The domestic allowance reported in March 2025 was 25 kg checked and 5 kg cabin, with excess at about USD 5 per kg paid at check-in. Extra weight could not be prepaid.
Pack to the lower of your international and domestic allowances. Fins, a mask and a computer travel easily; weights and tanks are supplied locally.
The backup route via Addu
If Fuvahmulah flights are full or do not fit, fly Male to Gan in Addu, about 70 to 90 minutes, then cross by sea. Pelagic Divers listed RTL public ferries in March 2025:
| Ferry | Times (Mar 2025) | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Addu to Fuvahmulah | 10:00 and 16:00 | About 1h15 to 1h20 |
| Fuvahmulah to Addu | 07:00 and 14:00 | About 1h15 to 1h20 |
| Vaadhoo (Huvadhu) to Fuvahmulah | 16:00 | About 2h |
Public ferries do not run on Fridays, and rough seas cancel crossings. Private speedboats from Addu run on request. Our getting to Addu page covers the Gan flights.
Limitations to plan around
- Two flights a day: missing one can cost half a day or a night.
- Separate tickets: a delay on your KLIA flight is not protected on a separate domestic booking.
- Diving and flying: keep the last day free of dives before the flight back.
- Weather: southwest monsoon seas (about May to November) can cancel the Addu ferry.
- Fridays: fewer services, and no public ferry.
Who this route suits
The direct flight suits divers with five or more nights who arrive on a morning KLIA flight. The Addu combination suits travellers who want a few resort nights in Addu and a few dive days on Fuvahmulah.
For a short trip, families with toddlers, or anyone who dislikes long transit, an atoll near Male is a better fit. Domestic fares and times change, so confirm every leg when you book.
