Fuvahmulah: guesthouse stay or a resort nearby?

You want Fuvahmulah's sharks but are unsure whether a guesthouse-only trip suits your group.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Fuvahmulah has no resort, so a stay there means a guesthouse on a local island. If you want resort comforts as well, the practical answer is a split trip, a few nights in a Fuvahmulah guesthouse and a few at a resort in Addu, linked by ferry or flight. Divers on a budget usually stay on Fuvahmulah only; honeymooners usually start in Addu.

  • Thoondu pebble beach and surf break
  • No resort: guesthouse stays only

Is there a resort on Fuvahmulah?

No. Fuvahmulah is a single inhabited island, and travel guides list guesthouses and small hotels only. Every stay there follows local island rules: no alcohol, modest dress in villages and Maldivian halal food.

That makes the question different from other atolls. The real choice is guesthouse only, or a guesthouse plus a resort in neighbouring Addu. Our Fuvahmulah atoll guide covers the island itself.

Staying in a Fuvahmulah guesthouse

A guesthouse stay suits travellers who want to dive, explore and eat local food. One guide counts about 25 places, many linked to dive centres, with rooms from about USD 80 a night at some properties (undated listing).

Many include airport pickup, bicycles and full board. Days follow a simple rhythm: morning dives, lunch, then the lakes, Thoondu beach or the heritage sites listed by Visit Maldives.

What you give up: a calm lagoon, a pool, a spa and a water villa. Evenings are quiet and alcohol-free. Our local island travel hub explains how guesthouse stays work in general.

Questions to ask a Fuvahmulah guesthouse

Guesthouses vary more than resorts, so a few written answers save trouble later:

  • Is airport pickup included, and do you meet the late flight?
  • Are meals included, and is full board available for the whole stay?
  • Which dive centre do you work with, and what certification and logged dives does it ask for at Tiger Harbour?
  • Do you have family rooms, and where is a safe spot to swim?
  • Are bicycles or motorbikes available, and is a helmet provided?
  • What is the total per room per night with Green Tax and Tourism GST shown?

A clear reply to each question also tells you how well the place is run. Small guesthouses often answer quickly on WhatsApp.

Adding resort nights in Addu

Addu, to the south, has resorts including Canareef, South Palm, Equator Village and a partly reopened Shangri-La Villingili. Gan airport links them by short drive or speedboat, and the RTL public ferry links Addu with Fuvahmulah.

In March 2025, a dive centre listed ferries from Addu at 10:00 and 16:00, taking about 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes, with no Friday service. Details are in our getting to Fuvahmulah page, and resort options are in our Addu local island versus resort comparison.

A sample split trip (7 nights)

NightsWhereWhy
1 to 4Fuvahmulah guesthouseFly from Male, dive three or four days
5 to 7Addu resortFerry across, rest, no-dive days before flying
Day 8Fly Gan to Male, then KLIAMorning domestic flight for an afternoon departure

Check the ferry day first, then build flights around it. If the sea is rough, budget for a private speedboat or a flight.

What about non-divers in the group?

Non-divers can enjoy Fuvahmulah for three or four days. Visit Maldives lists the Nature Park lakes with canoe and pedal boats, Bissaaveli's natural pools, the Kodakilhi mud bath, a heritage walk and sunset fishing with locals.

After that, the island has fewer options than a resort, and snorkelling from the beach is limited because the reef drops into open ocean. That is why a split stay often suits a mixed group: the diver gets shark days, and the non-diver gets a lagoon and a pool in Addu.

What changes the cost

The cost turns on the domestic flight, the number of dives and the resort nights. Guesthouse rooms are far cheaper than resort villas, and Green Tax is half the resort rate.

A split stay adds a ferry or speedboat leg and a few resort nights, so it costs more than a guesthouse-only trip. Run your numbers in the trip cost calculator, using written quotes with tax.

Who should choose what

Choose a Fuvahmulah guesthouse if diving is the point and you are comfortable with local island life. Choose a split stay for a couple who wants both sharks and a pool, or a group with one diver and one non-diver.

Choose an Addu resort, or another atoll altogether, for young children, a classic honeymoon or a short trip. Schedules and prices change, so confirm each leg when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Can I drink alcohol anywhere on Fuvahmulah?
No. Fuvahmulah is an inhabited local island, and alcohol is sold only at resorts, liveaboards and licensed tourist facilities. If that matters to your group, spend part of the trip at an Addu resort. For many Malaysian travellers the alcohol-free setting is a plus rather than a limit.
Are Fuvahmulah guesthouses suitable for families?
Many are, especially ones with family rooms, full board and airport pickup. The trade-off is the beach, since Fuvahmulah faces open ocean, with pebbles and currents at Thoondu, so it lacks the calm, shallow lagoon young children enjoy. Ask about a safe swimming spot and family room sizes before you book.
Which order is better for a split stay?
Many divers do Fuvahmulah first, while energy is high, and finish at an Addu resort, which also gives a no-dive day before flying. Others start at the resort to rest after the long journey. Check the ferry days, since public ferries do not run on Fridays.
