Getting to Kaafu (Male Atoll) from Male airport: options and limitations

You are heading to a Male Atoll guesthouse or resort and want the simplest, cheapest way across from the airport.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Everything in Kaafu is reached by boat. Resort speedboats take about 15 to 50 minutes, the shared speedboat to Maafushi is listed at USD 25 per person one way, and public ferries are cheapest but slow and usually do not run on Fridays. Speedboats are not tied to daylight like seaplanes, but shared boats keep set departure times, so match them to your flight.

Sources and dates are in the list below. For how transfers work across the country, read Maldives airport transfers explained.

Resort speedboats

Kaafu resorts collect you at Velana and run you across by speedboat. Bandos is commonly listed at about 15 minutes, while resorts farther out in North or South Male take longer.

A transfer cost guide puts shared resort speedboats near Male at about USD 100 to 370 per person return (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026). For two adults at USD 200 each, that is USD 400, about RM1,636 at RM4.09. Private boats cost more. Your resort quotes the exact figure.

Shared speedboats to guesthouse islands

This is how most guesthouse guests travel. Maafushi.com lists the shared airport speedboat at USD 25 per person one way and asks for advance booking (checked 11 Oct 2026). Two adults return is 2 x 2 x USD 25 = USD 100, about RM409.

Thulusdhoo is about 25 to 30 minutes by speedboat, per island guides, and other North Male islands such as Dhiffushi and Huraa have their own shared boats. Times and fares vary by operator, so ask your guesthouse to book and confirm.

Public ferries

Public ferries link Male with the inhabited islands of Kaafu. Ferry guides put Male to Maafushi at about 90 minutes to 2 hours, with no service on Fridays.

We could not reach an official MTCC timetable, so times and fares are left out here. The ferry suits travellers with time and light bags. With a morning flight and a 3- or 4-night trip, the speedboat usually earns its cost back in beach time.

Which option fits your Malaysian flight?

  • AirAsia, lands about 09:50: any boat works. Book a shared speedboat that leaves after about 11:00 to allow for immigration and bags.
  • Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25: shared boats and resort speedboats both work; check the early-afternoon departure.
  • Batik Air, lands about 21:55: ask your resort or guesthouse for a late boat in writing. Resorts often run late speedboats; guesthouse shared boats may not.

This flexibility is Kaafu's big advantage. Seaplane atolls need you in Male by about 15:30, while a Kaafu speedboat can often still get you to your island the same night.

Friday and holiday gaps

Fridays are the quiet day in the Maldives. Public ferries usually do not run, and some shared speedboats follow a reduced timetable.

If you arrive on a Friday, book a speedboat in advance rather than relying on the ferry. During Ramadan, ask about changed boat times too.

Step by step on arrival day

The arrival routine is the same for most Kaafu stays. Knowing it helps you plan the buffer between landing and the boat.

  1. Fill in the IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  2. Clear immigration and collect your bags, which usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
  3. Walk out to arrivals, where resort and transfer desks wait with name boards.
  4. Hand over your booking name, and keep the guesthouse's WhatsApp number ready in case the boat is not where you expect.
  5. Board the speedboat with life jackets on for children.

Leave at least 60 to 90 minutes between your scheduled landing and a shared boat departure. If the flight is late, message your guesthouse at once so it can hold a seat or move you to the next boat.

Going home

Departure is simpler, but the same rule applies: arrive at the airport about three hours before your flight. For AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines midday departures, that means a morning boat.

Batik Air leaves late in the evening, which gives you most of a last day on the island. Check the boat time the night before, and ask whether the guesthouse can hold your bags after check-out.

Who each option suits

Resort speedboats suit families, honeymooners and older travellers who want to be met at arrivals and taken straight to the island. Shared speedboats suit guesthouse travellers who want speed at a modest cost.

The public ferry suits long-stay, slow travellers. For the atoll overview, go back to the Kaafu atoll guide, or weigh your stay type in Kaafu local island versus resort.

Questions travellers ask

Where do Kaafu speedboats leave from?
Resort and shared guesthouse speedboats usually meet you at Velana airport itself, steps from arrivals, where operators and resorts have desks. Public ferries leave from terminals in Male City, which needs a short crossing from the airport first. Ask your property exactly where to meet and what sign to look for.
Can I just turn up and buy a speedboat seat?
It is risky. Shared boats fill up and keep set times, and maafushi.com asks guests to book in advance. Pre-book through your guesthouse with your flight number, so the operator knows to wait if you are delayed.
Is the Kaafu speedboat ride rough?
Short rides inside the atoll are usually manageable, but open stretches can be choppy in the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November. Sit near the back of the boat, where the motion is gentler, and keep medication handy if you get seasick. Young children should wear the life jackets provided.
What if my flight is delayed past the last shared boat?
You have two choices, a private speedboat at a higher price, or a night in Hulhumale and the first boat next morning. Ask your guesthouse in advance what a private boat would cost, so the decision on the night is quick.
