Kaafu (Male Atoll) travel guide for Malaysians

You want a Maldives trip without seaplanes or long transfers, and Kaafu keeps coming up.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Kaafu (Male Atoll) surrounds the capital and Velana airport, so almost everything is a speedboat ride away, from about 15 minutes to Bandos to about 45 minutes to Maafushi. It has the country's biggest choice of guesthouse islands and many resorts, and speedboats are not tied to daylight like seaplanes. It suits first-timers, short trips, budget travellers, families and Batik Air evening arrivals.

Where is Kaafu, and why does it matter?

Kaafu is the atoll around Male. The government atoll portal lists it as Male Atholhu and notes that it takes in Kaashidhoo island and Gaafaru atoll as well as Male Atoll itself, which travellers split into North Male and South Male.

Velana International Airport sits here, so Kaafu is the one atoll where your holiday can start within minutes of landing. For how it compares with farther regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

The guesthouse islands

Kaafu has the biggest cluster of local islands open to tourists. Each has a different feel.

Hotelier Maldives describes Thulusdhoo as having over thirty guesthouses with more than 430 beds. Start with the Maafushi island guide or the Thulusdhoo island guide.

The resorts

Kaafu's resorts are mostly speedboat resorts, which cuts the transfer cost and removes the daylight limit. Bandos, for example, is commonly listed at about 15 minutes by speedboat from the airport.

The range runs from mid-range family resorts to top-end private islands. A transfer cost guide puts shared speedboats to resorts near Male at about USD 100 to 370 per person return (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026), against much higher seaplane prices elsewhere. See the Bandos profile as one example.

Surfing, snorkelling and excursions

Kaafu is the Maldives' most accessible surf region. Cokes, off the northern tip of Thulusdhoo, is a fast, hollow right-hander for experienced surfers, and the surf season runs roughly April to November.

Away from the surf, guesthouse islands sell sandbank trips, snorkelling, dolphin cruises and resort day passes. Malaysian Muslim packages to Maafushi often bundle these, such as HolidayGoGoGo's Arena Beach 4D3N at RM2,319 per adult twin share, flights excluded, valid to 31 Oct 2026 (checked 11 Oct 2026).

How do you get there from KLIA?

Fly KLIA to Male, then take a speedboat or public ferry. No domestic flight is needed.

All three Malaysian nonstop flights work, including Batik Air's arrival at about 21:55, as long as your property confirms a late speedboat. Shared boats run to set schedules, so check the last departure. Full details are in getting to Kaafu from Male airport.

How long to stay, and how to combine islands

Three nights is enough for a first taste of Kaafu, because you lose so little time to transfers. Four or five nights lets you add a resort day pass, a surf session or a full-day snorkel trip without rushing.

Kaafu also works as the first half of a split trip. Many travellers spend two or three nights on Maafushi or Thulusdhoo, then move to a resort for the last nights. Because both are close to the airport, the move costs a short speedboat ride rather than a seaplane.

If you are flying Batik Air, Kaafu is also the easiest place to spend your first night. A late speedboat to a resort or guesthouse saves you a Hulhumale hotel and gives you a full first morning on the beach. Confirm the late boat in writing before you book.

Families, older travellers and honeymooners

Families with young children gain most from Kaafu's short transfers. A 15 to 45 minute boat ride is far easier with a toddler than a connection plus a seaplane, and you can choose a resort with a kids' club or a calm lagoon.

Older travellers benefit from being met at arrivals and avoiding small aircraft steps and luggage limits. Honeymooners can still find private villas here, though the most secluded overwater settings are often in farther atolls.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Dress on local islands: cover shoulders and knees; swimwear only on the bikini beach.
  • Fridays: public ferries usually do not run, and island life is quieter.
  • Taxes: Green Tax is USD 6 per guest per night at small registered guesthouses and USD 12 at resorts.
  • Weather: the northeast monsoon, about December to April, is usually drier; surfers prefer the southwest months.
  • Prayer: every local island has a mosque; at resorts, ask for a prayer mat and Qibla direction.

Who Kaafu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Kaafu suits first-timers, 3- or 4-night trips, budget travellers, families with small children and anyone landing in the evening. It is also the easy choice for older travellers who would rather skip a seaplane.

Choose differently if you want mantas, whale sharks or a remote island feel. North Ari is the next step out; see the Alifu Alifu (North Ari) atoll guide. Package prices and boat schedules change, so confirm them when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Male City part of Kaafu?
Male City is administered separately from Kaafu Atoll, though it sits geographically within Male Atoll alongside Velana airport and Hulhumale. For travellers the distinction rarely matters. You land at Velana and take a speedboat or ferry to your island, often without passing through Male City at all.
Is Kaafu less beautiful because it is close to Male?
The water and reefs are still Maldivian, and many Kaafu resorts have good house reefs. You may see more boat traffic, other islands and sometimes the airport's planes on the horizon. If an empty horizon matters most, consider a seaplane atoll. For most first-timers the shorter transfer is worth more.
Can Muslim families find halal food in Kaafu?
Local islands such as Maafushi have no pork or alcohol, and some Malaysian agencies sell Muslim tour packages there with halal meals, such as HolidayGoGoGo's Arena Beach package. At resorts, ask in writing which outlets are halal before you pay.
Do I need a seaplane for any Kaafu resort?
Rarely. Most Kaafu resorts use speedboats, which is a big reason they suit late arrivals and families. A few farther resorts may offer seaplanes as an option. Check the transfer mode in your quotation before comparing prices.
