Thulusdhoo is the local island closest in feel to a small town: a capital island with a factory, a harbour, surfers in the water and guesthouses along the beach. It is also one of the quickest islands to reach from the airport.
This page covers what Thulusdhoo is like and who it suits. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, or browse the island directory.
What kind of island is Thulusdhoo?
Thulusdhoo is an inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll and serves as the atoll's administrative capital. It sits in North Male Atoll, about half an hour by speedboat from Velana airport.
It is home to the Coca-Cola bottling plant of Male' Aerated Water Company, Coca-Cola's bottling partner in the Maldives. Travel guides call it the only Coca-Cola plant using desalinated seawater, a claim we could not confirm independently.
Tourism grew around surfing. The Cokes break sits right off the island, and aMaldives listed 34 guesthouses in early 2026.
Who Thulusdhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere
| Traveller | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Surfers | Strong | Cokes on the doorstep, Chickens a short boat ride away |
| Short trips of 3 nights | Strong | About 30 minutes from the airport, boats into the night |
| Friends on a budget | Strong | Many small guesthouses, cheap public ferry option |
| Muslim travellers | Strong | Halal food by default, mosque in the village |
| Families with young children | Good | Short transfer; choose a guesthouse near the calmer beach |
| Couples wanting seclusion | Fair | Livelier than Dhiffushi or Thoddoo in surf season |
| Travellers wanting wide sandy beaches | Fair | Beaches are smaller than on some other islands |
Surfers comparing bases should read Thulusdhoo versus Himmafushi for Malaysian surfers.
Island customs and the bikini beaches
Thulusdhoo is a Muslim community. Cover shoulders and knees in the village and keep swimwear for the designated tourist beaches.
aMaldives names two: an eastern beach and a northwest beach, both used as bikini beaches. Surfers wear boardshorts and rash vests on boats to the breaks.
Guides also report a taxi boat from the bikini beach to an offshore bar boat, outside the island. It is optional, and the island itself is alcohol-free. General rules are in what a bikini beach is.
How a stay on Thulusdhoo works
Because the boat is so short, even a Malaysia Airlines arrival leaves most of the afternoon on the island. River Speed boats reportedly leave from outside the airport arrivals area at about 11:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 22:00.
Surfers spend mornings and late afternoons in the water. Others mix beach time, a snorkel or sandbank trip and an evening at one of the island's cafes.
Activities, surf seasons and day trips are on what to do on Thulusdhoo.
Getting there in brief
The shared speedboat takes about 25 to 30 minutes and costs about USD 30 per person one way. The public ferry from Male costs a few dollars and takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, but does not run on Fridays.
Times and options for each KUL flight are on how to get to Thulusdhoo from Male airport.
Money, health and services
- ATMs: Maldives Islamic Bank opened ATM services on Thulusdhoo in December 2024, and Bank of Maldives reported ATM coverage on every inhabited Kaafu island from May 2025. Bring US dollars too.
- Island size: Thulusdhoo is small enough to walk; one listing puts it at about 700 by 400 metres.
- Health: as the atoll capital it is likely to have a health centre, but we could not confirm details. Bring regular medicines and take travel insurance with evacuation cover.
- Taxes: small guesthouses add USD 6 Green Tax per guest per night, plus 10% service and 17% Tourism GST on the room.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers
Honeymooners can enjoy Thulusdhoo on a short trip, then move to a North Male resort, which is close. Those who want quiet for the whole stay may prefer Dhiffushi.
Families and older travellers benefit from the 30-minute transfer. Ask for a ground-floor room near a tourist beach, and avoid the surf breaks for swimming.
When a different choice works better
Choose Dhiffushi for longer, calmer beaches; see the Dhiffushi island guide. Choose Maafushi for the widest menu of excursions.
Choose Thulusdhoo when surf, a very short transfer or a lively small-town feel matter most.
