Getting to Noonu from Male airport: options and limitations

The short answer: two practical routes

Noonu has two realistic routes from Velana International Airport in Male: a seaplane or a domestic flight to Maafaru with a short boat. Everything else is a compromise.

Which route works with your Malaysian flight?

Match the transfer to your arrival time first. Malaysia is 3 hours ahead of the Maldives.

• AirAsia, lands about 09:50: Any route works. Allow time for immigration, baggage and the resort's lounge check-in.
• Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25: Any route works, with a comfortable margin for the 15:30 seaplane cut-off.
• Batik Air, lands about 21:55: No seaplane. Soneva's listed last Male to Maafaru flight window ends at 23:00, so a same-night flight may be possible but tight. Many travellers plan a night near the airport instead.

Seaplane to Noonu: what to expect

Seaplanes leave from the seaplane terminal on the airport island, operated by Manta Air or Trans Maldivian depending on the resort. Soneva Jani uses Manta Air. For other resorts, ask which operator flies you, since luggage rules follow the operator.

The limitations are practical ones:

• Flights operate only between sunrise and sunset.
• Luggage is usually 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand per person on Trans Maldivian; Soneva lists 25 kg in total.
• Surfboards and oversized items may not fit and can need a charter.
• Shared flights may stop at other resorts on the way.
• There are no toilets on board.

Domestic flight to Maafaru: what to expect

Maafaru Airport (NMF) opened in December 2019 and sits on the local island of Maafaru. Wheeled aircraft fly from Male's domestic terminal, then the resort's speedboat meets you at the jetty.

Soneva lists domestic baggage at 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand, with a 32 kg maximum per bag. Excess luggage may follow on a later flight. This route usually costs less and runs later in the evening than a seaplane.

What the transfer costs, worked in ringgit

Soneva Jani is one of the few Noonu resorts that publishes its rates. These are 2026 figures per person, return, checked 12 Oct 2026.

For a couple, the domestic flight saves about USD 1,400 return (2 x 700), roughly RM5,726. Siyam World and other resorts set their own rates, so ask for both routes in writing. Read more on domestic flight plus speedboat transfers.

When an extra night is the better plan

Add a night near Male if you land after about 15:30 and want a seaplane, or if a late domestic flight is sold out. Soneva lists its first next-day seaplane at 09:00.

Plan the return the same way. Seaplane departures generally suit international flights leaving from about 09:00 to 16:00, so a morning flight home may also mean a last night near the airport.

Guesthouse guests: getting to a Noonu local island

Maafaru, where the airport sits, has a few guesthouses listed on booking sites, so guests there can land and reach their room quickly. Other islands such as Manadhoo need an onward boat that the guesthouse arranges.

We could not confirm public ferry timings or fares to Noonu from an official source. Ask the guesthouse for the flight time it has booked, who meets you and the cost of any boat.

Who each route suits

The seaplane suits honeymooners and first-timers who land in the morning and value the aerial view. The domestic flight suits families watching the budget, late arrivals and anyone carrying more luggage.
