You have seen a Noonu resort you like and want to know what the atoll means for your flights, transfers and budget.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Noonu is a northern atoll best known for high-end resorts such as Soneva Jani and Siyam World. You reach it from Male by a seaplane of about 40 to 45 minutes or a domestic flight of about 30 minutes to Maafaru plus a short speedboat. It suits couples and families with a resort budget; budget travellers usually get more from the islands near Male.

Where is Noonu, and what is it known for?

Noonu is an atoll in the north of the Maldives, north of Raa and Baa. Its official name is Miladhunmadulu Dhekunuburi, the southern half of Miladhunmadulu Atoll.

For Malaysian travellers it is mainly a resort atoll. The best-known names are Soneva Jani, Siyam World and Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, and they shape how most people experience Noonu. For the bigger picture across all regions, see our atolls and regions hub.

How do you get to Noonu from KLIA?

You fly KLIA to Male nonstop, then take a second transfer. Noonu is too far for a sensible speedboat ride from Male.

  • Seaplane: Soneva Jani gives about 40 minutes on a Manta Air seaplane. Siyam World gives about 40 minutes direct from Velana airport.
  • Domestic flight plus boat: Soneva lists a flight of about 30 minutes to Maafaru, then about 10 minutes by speedboat. Siyam World lists 30 minutes plus 15 minutes.
  • Speedboat from Male: Soneva advises against it: about 3.5 to 4 hours and often rough.

The full comparison, with timings by flight, is on getting to Noonu from Male airport.

What a Noonu arrival day looks like from Malaysia

Your Malaysian flight decides the day. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and resorts ask you to land in Male by about 15:30.

Flight from KULLands in Male (local)Noonu the same day?
AirAsiaAbout 09:50Yes, seaplane or domestic flight
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25Yes, seaplane or domestic flight
Batik AirAbout 21:55Seaplane no; ask whether a late domestic flight connects, or stay near Male

Soneva lists Male to Maafaru flights running from 08:00 to 23:00, so an evening arrival is not always a lost night. Confirm the actual flight with your resort, since seats and times change.

What does a transfer to Noonu cost?

Expect transfers to be a large share of the bill. Soneva Jani publishes its 2026 rates, checked on 12 Oct 2026, and they show the range clearly.

Soneva Jani transfer, 2026Per adult, returnAt RM4.09 per USD
Shared seaplaneUSD 1,300About RM5,317
Domestic flight to Maafaru (speedboat free if booked via Soneva)USD 600About RM2,454

Arithmetic: 1,300 x 4.09 = 5,317; 600 x 4.09 = 2,454. Children pay half these rates and infants under 2 travel free without a seat. Other Noonu resorts price differently, so treat these as one resort's figures, not an atoll average.

Resorts and local islands in Noonu

Most visitors stay at a resort, and the choice spans several styles. Soneva Jani is an ultra-luxury overwater resort. Siyam World is a large resort that sells itself on activities, which can suit families.

Noonu also has inhabited islands with small guesthouses, including Maafaru, home of the airport, and Manadhoo. We found mostly booking-site listings for these, not council or tourism-board pages. Read our Noonu local island versus resort comparison before planning a guesthouse stay here.

Practical notes for Malaysian travellers

  • Halal food and prayer: Resorts differ. Ask each resort in writing whether its kitchens and any specific restaurants are halal, and whether a qibla direction or prayer mat is provided.
  • Alcohol: Served at resorts, not on local islands.
  • Luggage: Seaplane allowances are usually 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand per person. Soneva lists 25 kg in total.
  • Taxes: Room rates usually add a 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST, plus Green Tax of USD 12 per guest per night at resorts.
  • Booking lead time: Soneva asks for transfer bookings at least 72 hours before arrival.

Who Noonu suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Noonu suits couples and families with a resort budget who want a quieter, far-from-Male feel and are happy to pay for the transfer. It also suits travellers who already have a specific Noonu resort in mind.

A different choice often works better if you are on a tight budget, have only three nights, or land late on Batik Air and want no overnight in Male. In those cases, compare speedboat resorts in North or South Male Atoll, or a local island such as Maafushi. For a nearby atoll with more wildlife focus, read the Raa atoll guide and the Baa atoll guide.

Prices and transfer rules change often, so confirm every figure with the resort when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Is Noonu too far for a short 3-night trip from Malaysia?
It can work, but the maths is tough. A return transfer to a Noonu resort costs several hundred to over a thousand US dollars per adult, which hurts more over three nights than over five. If your AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines flight lands in the morning, you can be in Noonu by lunch. Batik Air evening arrivals usually mean a first night near Male.
Can I visit a local island in Noonu?
Yes. Islands such as Maafaru and Manadhoo have small guesthouses listed on booking sites, but we found few independent sources on transfers and services there. Treat a Noonu local-island stay as an adventure for flexible travellers and confirm everything with the guesthouse first. Our Noonu local island versus resort page covers this in more detail.
Is the domestic flight cheaper than the seaplane?
Often, but not always. Soneva lists its Maafaru domestic flight at USD 600 per adult return against USD 1,300 for its shared seaplane in 2026. Other resorts price both routes closer together. Ask for both options in writing, per adult and per child, return, before you compare packages.
What is the weather like in Noonu?
Noonu follows the national pattern. The drier northeast monsoon runs about December to April and the wetter southwest monsoon about May to November. Rough seas can delay speedboats and seaplanes in the wet season, so leave slack in your plans for the transfer days.
