Three ways to reach Raa

Raa has three routes from Male: seaplane, domestic flight plus speedboat, and public ferry for local islands. Which one fits depends on your landing time and where in Raa you are going.

Which route works with your Malaysian flight?

• AirAsia, about 09:50: All resort routes work the same day.
• Malaysia Airlines, about 11:25: All resort routes work, though a long seaplane wait could push you into the afternoon.
• Batik Air, about 21:55: No seaplane. Plan a night near the airport unless your resort confirms a late flight and night boat.

Some Raa resorts set a seaplane cut-off earlier than the usual 15:30. Listings for Adaaran Select Meedhupparu say international flights must land by 15:15 and depart at 09:25 or later. Furaveri listings mention seaplanes from 09:00 to 15:00.

Resort-by-resort transfer times

These are the times quoted in listings for three Raa resorts. They show how much the boat leg varies.

These come from third-party listings, so confirm the current figures with the resort. Add check-in, waiting and luggage time on top.

The public ferry for local islands

Guesthouse pages in Raa describe public ferries leaving from Male City, not the airport, and taking from about 4 to 10 hours depending on the route. They say ferries do not run on Fridays.

We could not confirm a current timetable or fare from an official source. Ungoofaaru, the atoll capital, is described as the main hub, with onward boats to other islands. Treat the ferry as a choice for flexible travellers with time to spare.

Costs: what to ask for

We found no dated official transfer rate for a Raa resort. Use the national ranges as a planning guide only: shared seaplanes about USD 400 to 820 per adult return, and domestic flight plus speedboat about USD 350 to 520 (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026).

At RM4.09 per USD, that is roughly RM1,636 to RM3,354 per adult return for a seaplane and RM1,432 to RM2,127 for flight plus boat. Ask each resort for its exact price per adult and per child, return. Some Raa resorts run free-transfer promotions for longer stays, so check the minimum nights.

Seaplane or domestic flight: how to decide

Choose the seaplane if you land in the morning, your resort has a long boat leg from the airport, or the view matters to you. A 45-minute seaplane straight to the resort jetty can beat a 35-minute flight followed by a 65-minute boat.

Choose the domestic flight if you land later, travel with lots of luggage, or the resort's boat leg is short. JOALI Maldives, with about 15 minutes by boat from Ifuru, is an example where the flight route stays quick.

When an extra night near Male makes sense

Plan a night near the airport if you land after about 15:00 and want a seaplane, or if your resort cannot confirm a late flight and night boat. The same applies on the way home if your flight to Malaysia leaves early in the morning.

That extra night adds a hotel bill and Green Tax, so include it when you compare a Raa resort with one closer to Male. Some travellers on Batik Air choose a Male-area resort for the first night and fly north the next morning.

Seasonal limits on the boat leg

The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, brings rougher seas, which affect the longer speedboat legs most. Resorts may delay or reroute boats in bad weather.

Seaplanes also wait for safe conditions, which is one reason listings warn of waits at the terminal. Build a spare hour into any same-day plan, and avoid booking a tight onward connection on your departure day.

• What is the seaplane cut-off for arrival and departure?
• Is the transfer shared, and could there be a wait of up to 3 hours?
• What is the luggage limit per person?
