Where is Raa, and what is it like?

Raa sits in the north of the Maldives, between Noonu to the north and Baa to the south. Its official name is Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi, the northern part of Maalhosmadulu, and its capital is Ungoofaaru.

Matching your Malaysian flight to a Raa transfer

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrive in time for a same-day seaplane. Listings for Adaaran Select Meedhupparu set an earlier cut-off of 15:15, and Furaveri listings mention seaplanes from 09:00 to 15:00, so morning arrivals have the most room.

Batik Air lands about 21:55, after the last seaplane. Plan a night near the airport, or ask whether a late domestic flight and boat can be arranged, which depends on the resort.

Local islands in Raa

Raa has many inhabited islands, and a few, such as Vaadhoo and Alifushi, have guesthouses that advertise on booking sites. Those pages describe a domestic flight to Ifuru and a guesthouse speedboat, or a long public ferry from Male City.

What a Raa transfer may cost

We found no dated official transfer price list for a Raa resort, so use national planning ranges until your resort quotes. One transfer guide gives shared seaplanes at about USD 400 to 820 per adult return, and domestic flight plus speedboat at about USD 350 to 520 (immaldives.com, checked 11 Oct 2026).

At RM4.09 per USD, that is roughly RM1,636 to RM3,354 per adult for a seaplane, and RM1,432 to RM2,127 for flight plus boat. For a couple over four nights, the transfer can cost as much as one or two nights in the room.

That is why trip length matters in Raa. Spreading a fixed transfer over five or six nights makes the per-night cost of the holiday easier to justify than a three-night stay.

When to go to Raa

Raa follows the national seasons. The drier northeast monsoon runs about December to April, and the wetter southwest monsoon about May to November.

Malaysian school holidays in late May, June and December fall on either side of that change. In the wetter months, expect some rain and choppier boat legs, and allow slack around transfer days. Raa's neighbour Baa has the Hanifaru manta season from about June to November, which some Raa resorts can reach by boat; ask before assuming a day trip is possible.

Planning checklist for a Raa trip

• Ask which airport: Ifuru or Dharavandhoo, and how long the boat is.
• Ask about weather waits: some listings warn of waits of up to 3 hours for a seaplane.
• Confirm luggage: usually 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand on seaplanes.
• Ask about halal food: resorts differ, so get the answer in writing.
• Count taxes: service charge 10% and Tourism GST 17% on most room rates, plus Green Tax of USD 12 per guest per night at resorts.
• Send flight details early: listings ask for them at least 72 hours before arrival.

Who Raa suits, and when to choose elsewhere

Raa suits couples, wellness travellers and families who want a resort away from the busier atolls near Male, and who are happy with a seaplane or flight transfer. It works best with four nights or more.
