Gulhi Maldives island travel guide for Malaysians

You want a local-island trip near Male that feels calmer than Maafushi.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 5 min

Quick answer

Gulhi is a small inhabited island in South Male Atoll, about 25 to 30 minutes from Male by shared speedboat or about an hour by the MVR 22 public ferry. It suits couples and small groups who want a bikini beach, cheap snorkel trips and quiet evenings, with busier Maafushi five minutes away by boat. Four nights for two typically land around RM 1,500 to RM 4,700 on the ground before meals, trips and flights.

Gulhi is a small, quiet local island in South Male Atoll, a short boat ride from Male and right beside busier Maafushi. It works well for Malaysians who want a bikini beach, easy snorkel trips and calm evenings on a short budget trip.

This guide covers the whole Gulhi decision on one page: getting there, what it costs, what to do and where to stay. For other islands, start with the island directory.

What is Gulhi like?

Gulhi is a working fishing and boat-building island of roughly 670 by 230 metres, so you can walk end to end in a few minutes. It has about 14 guesthouses, a designated bikini beach and a handful of local cafes.

Evenings are quiet. There is no nightlife and no alcohol, which many Malaysian travellers will see as a plus. Shops keep irregular hours and close briefly for prayer times.

Do not confuse it with Gulhifalhu, a reclaimed industrial island beside Male. Your booking should say K. Gulhi.

How do you get to Gulhi from Male airport?

Take a shared speedboat for speed, or the public ferry if you land early and want to spend almost nothing.

OptionTimeReported fareReported schedule
Shared speedboatAbout 25 to 30 minAbout USD 25 to 30 pp one wayFrom Male 12:30 and 16:45; from Gulhi 07:45 and 13:30
Public ferryAbout 1 hourMVR 22 ppFrom Male (Villingili terminal) about 15:00; from Gulhi about 08:00; no Friday service
Private speedboatAbout 20 to 30 minAbout USD 170 per boat one wayOn request

Figures come from aMaldives and Beyond the Bucket List, checked 12 October 2026. One source also says the ferry skips Mondays, so confirm the timetable with your guesthouse.

In practice, AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals make the 12:30 speedboat or the afternoon ferry comfortably. A Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 means a private boat or a night in Hulhumale. Our guide to choosing speedboat or public ferry explains the trade-off.

Where is the bikini beach and what can you do?

The designated bikini beach sits on the north and east side, with white sand, palm shade, sunbeds and calm, shallow water. Swimwear is fine there. Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees.

There are no lifeguards, so keep children within arm's reach. Showers and changing rooms are reported nearby.

Things to do, with prices reported by travellers (treat as planning guides):

  • Snorkel day trip: about USD 70 pp for a full day with nurse sharks, rays and a sandbank lunch.
  • Manta and whale shark trip: about USD 100 pp, a long day out of South Male.
  • Diving: single dives reported at about USD 90 and PADI Open Water at about USD 490. Nearby sites include Kandooma Thila and Guraidhoo Corner.
  • Free: watch nurse sharks and rays near the harbour around sunset.
  • Surf: breaks such as Quarters and Tiger Stripes, best roughly April to October.

Book trips through your guesthouse or a registered operator on the island. Group trips cost far less than private charters.

Where do you stay on Gulhi?

About 14 guesthouses operate, most with under 12 rooms. Named examples include Arrival Beach and Spa, Arrival Seaview (with a pool), Beach Walk Villa (8 rooms, pool), Coquillage Inn (11 rooms), Aqua Gulhi (6 rooms) and Sandy Heaven.

Shortlist with this decision rule:

  1. Families: pick a property with a pool and ground-floor rooms, close to the bikini beach.
  2. Couples: a sea-view room near the beach is worth a small premium.
  3. Budget: a back-street room with breakfast, paid in US dollars cash.

Some guesthouses add about 5% for card payment. Ask whether the quote includes service charge, Tourism GST and Green Tax.

What does a 4-night Gulhi trip cost?

For two adults sharing a room for 4 nights, the ground cost is about RM 1,500 to RM 4,700 before meals, trips and flights. Here is the arithmetic at RM 4.09 per USD, checked 12 October 2026.

ItemBudget caseComfort case
Room, 4 nightsUSD 60 x 4 = USD 240USD 180 x 4 = USD 720
Service 10% + GST 17% on roomUSD 69USD 207
Green Tax USD 6 x 2 people x 4 nightsUSD 48USD 48
Return transfer, 2 peopleFerry MVR 22 x 4 = MVR 88 (about USD 6)Speedboat USD 30 x 4 = USD 120
Total for the coupleAbout USD 363, or RM 1,485About USD 1,095, or RM 4,479

The room band (USD 60 to 180 per room per night before tax) is a 2026 market benchmark from holiday.com.mv, not a Gulhi quote. Prices vary by season, so treat this as a planning range. Add flights from KUL, meals of roughly USD 5 at local cafes, and trips.

Run your own numbers in the trip cost calculator, and see how Green Tax is charged at guesthouses.

Practical services

  • Cash: bring US dollars in small notes. Bank of Maldives reported ATM coverage on every inhabited Kaafu island from May 2025, though older guides say Gulhi had none, so do not rely on it.
  • Health: a small clinic and pharmacy. Serious cases go to Male.
  • Connectivity: 4G is generally good. Buy a SIM at the airport.
  • Prayer: ask your guesthouse for directions to the nearest mosque and the local Friday prayer time.

Who suits Gulhi, and when is another island better?

Gulhi suits couples, friend groups and first-timers who want quiet with Maafushi's tour choice close by. Older travellers manage well on a flat, small island if they take the speedboat.

Choose Maafushi if you want more cafes, more tours and a livelier evening. Choose Guraidhoo for surf and a slightly larger village. Honeymooners wanting a private pool or alcohol should look at a resort instead.

Questions travellers ask

Is Gulhi the same as Gulhifalhu?
No. Gulhifalhu is a reclaimed industrial island beside Male. Gulhi is a separate inhabited island in South Male Atoll, near Maafushi and Guraidhoo. When you book a boat or a guesthouse, check that the listing says K. Gulhi in South Male Atoll so there is no mix-up with the transfer.
Can I find halal food on Gulhi?
Gulhi is a Muslim local island, so the food served in guesthouses and local cafes follows local Muslim practice and pork and alcohol are not sold. Breakfast is usually included in the room rate. If you have specific requirements, ask your guesthouse directly before you book, as each kitchen is run separately.
Can I visit Maafushi from Gulhi?
Yes. The two islands sit close together and guides describe the hop as about five minutes by boat. Many snorkel day trips from Maafushi stop at Gulhi too. Ask your guesthouse to arrange a short transfer, since the public ferry only runs once a day and not on Fridays.
Is Gulhi suitable for older travellers?
It can be, because the island is flat and small enough to walk end to end in minutes. The main effort is the boat. A shared speedboat is quicker and easier than the public ferry with luggage. There is only a small clinic, so travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is sensible.
