Guraidhoo is a local island for people who want to be close to the airport without the busier feel of Maafushi. It is small, walkable and sits beside one of South Male Atoll's best-known channels for diving.

This page covers what the island is like, who it suits and how a stay works. For local islands in general, start with the beginner guide to Maldives local islands, or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Guraidhoo?

Guraidhoo is an inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll, in the part usually called South Male Atoll. It lies about 31 km south of Male and is under 1 km long, roughly 675 m by 500 m.

The 2022 census counted 1,743 residents. It is a working village with a mosque, school, small shops, cafes and a health facility, and guesthouse tourism has grown alongside fishing and other local work.

Note there is a second Guraidhoo in Thaa Atoll, far to the south. Some websites mix the two, so check the atoll on any listing or transfer quote.

Why choose Guraidhoo?

People pick Guraidhoo for a calmer stay that is still easy to reach. The speedboat is about as quick as Maafushi's, but the island is smaller and quieter.

How do you get there?

A shared speedboat from Male takes about 35 to 45 minutes, with about three departures a day each way reported. A public ferry takes about 2 hours, runs Saturday to Thursday and does not run on Fridays.

AirAsia (lands about 09:50) and Malaysia Airlines (about 11:25) arrivals connect easily. A Batik Air arrival at about 21:55 is late; ask whether an evening boat is running, or stay a night in Hulhumale. Details are on how to get to Guraidhoo from Male airport.

What about the beach?

This is the main question to settle before booking. Sources describe the beach set-up differently.

A 2019 guide said the tourist beach was on a connected neighbouring islet, with shallow water and dead coral making swimming difficult, and a less formal spot facing a nearby resort. Newer listings describe a designated bikini beach and a sandbank reachable on foot at low tide.

Ask your guesthouse where swimwear is allowed now, how far it is, and whether the water is good for swimming at your travel dates. If an easy swimming beach matters most, compare with Maafushi.

Island customs for visitors

Guraidhoo follows local island norms. Cover shoulders and knees in the village, and keep swimwear for the designated beach area.

  • No alcohol on the island.
  • Fridays are quieter around midday prayers, and there is no public ferry.
  • During Ramadan, cafes may keep shorter daytime hours.
  • Muslim travellers will find the mosque a short walk from any guesthouse.

Money, connectivity and health

Bring cash. The most detailed guide found (2019) reported no ATM on the island, and we could not confirm a newer one. Bring US dollars or rufiyaa from Male.

The island has a health facility and a pharmacy, according to older guides. Serious cases go to Male, which is close by speedboat. Pack regular medicines and carry travel insurance.

Who Guraidhoo suits, and who should look elsewhere

Suits well: budget travellers and couples who want quiet evenings, divers using the South Male channels, and travellers splitting a trip between a local island and a resort.

Families: the short transfer helps, but confirm the beach and shallow-water conditions first.

Older travellers: the speedboat is short and Male's hospitals are close. Ask about a ground-floor room.

Look elsewhere if: you want lots of restaurants and excursion choice (Maafushi), or mantas (Baa, such as Dharavandhoo).

Questions travellers ask

Is Guraidhoo better than Maafushi?
It depends on what you want. Maafushi has more guesthouses, restaurants and excursion choice, and a well-known bikini beach. Guraidhoo is smaller and calmer, with a similar transfer time. If you want quiet evenings and plan to spend days on boat trips anyway, Guraidhoo can suit you better.
Is the food on Guraidhoo halal?
Guraidhoo is a Muslim community and alcohol and pork are not allowed on local islands, so guesthouse and cafe food generally follows local Muslim norms. If you need formal halal certification, ask your guesthouse what it can confirm in writing before you pay a deposit.
Is there an ATM on Guraidhoo?
The most detailed guide we found said there was no ATM, but it dates from 2019. Treat cash as essential. Withdraw rufiyaa or bring US dollars before you leave Male, and ask your guesthouse whether it accepts cards for the room and excursions.
Can I visit a resort from Guraidhoo?
Several resorts sit nearby in South Male Atoll, and guesthouses often arrange day passes. A resort visit is the only way to have a drink, since alcohol is not allowed on the island. Ask what the pass includes and how the boat transfer is charged.
