Quick answer

Huraa is a small inhabited island in North Male Atoll, about 20 to 30 minutes from Male by shared speedboat or about 1 hour 10 minutes by the public ferry. Its draw is a protected mangrove area you can kayak through, a designated bikini beach and boat access to surf breaks and dive sites. It suits couples and first-timers on a short, budget-friendly trip who prefer quiet evenings.

Huraa is a small local island in North Male Atoll, close enough to Male that you can land in the morning and be on the beach by lunch. Its point of difference is a protected mangrove area, rare on a Maldivian island, plus a designated bikini beach.

It suits Malaysians who want a calm, affordable first taste of local-island life. Browse other islands in the island directory.

What is Huraa like?

Huraa is a quiet residential island with about 16 guesthouses, small cafes and a harbour where boats leave for surf, dive and snorkel trips. Guesthouse owners describe it as popular with Maldivian weekenders as well as foreign guests.

Evenings are slow. There is no alcohol, and Friday is the rest day when most shops close and the public ferry does not run.

The island sits in the same lagoon area as several resorts, which is why resort day passes are a common add-on.

How does a stay on Huraa work?

Most stays follow the same pattern: your guesthouse arranges the boat, breakfast is included, and trips are booked through the guesthouse or an operator near the harbour.

A typical 4-night shape:

DayWhat usually happens
1Land at Velana, shared speedboat to Huraa, afternoon on the bikini beach
2Morning snorkel or dolphin trip, evening walk to the harbour
3Mangrove kayak, optional resort day pass
4Free day, or surf or dive in season
5Morning boat to the airport

The Huraa transfer guide covers boat times against Malaysian flight arrivals. The Huraa activities guide prices each trip.

Island customs to know

Huraa is a Muslim community, and local rules are straightforward.

  • Swimwear only on the designated bikini beach on the northern side.
  • Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees, men and women.
  • Shops may close for 15 to 20 minutes at prayer times.
  • Alcohol and pork are not available and cannot be brought in.
  • Ask before photographing locals, especially women and children.

Practical services

  • Cash: Bank of Maldives opened an ATM on Huraa in May 2025, completing ATM coverage of Kaafu Atoll. Small shops still prefer cash, so carry US dollars in small notes.
  • Health: a small health centre handles minor issues. Serious cases are referred to Male.
  • Connectivity: 4G is generally good, and most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi.
  • Water: guesthouses usually provide filtered water; bottled water is sold in shops.

Where to stay

Most properties are small, with under 15 rooms. Named examples include Pearl Sands at Huraa (beside the bikini beach), Golden Turtle, Green Villa and Sea Breeze View, which has a pool.

Our Huraa guesthouse guide compares them and gives a shortlist rule. For a costed four-night budget, see what a holiday on Huraa costs.

What to check before you book Huraa

A few questions to send your guesthouse will settle most of the uncertainty about a Huraa stay.

  • Which transfer they arrange, at what time, and the price per person or per boat.
  • How far the room is from the bikini beach, and whether the beach is public or attached to a property.
  • Whether the room rate includes service charge, Tourism GST and Green Tax.
  • Whether breakfast is included and what other meals the kitchen can prepare.
  • Which trips they run themselves and which go through outside operators.
  • How they handle Friday, when the public ferry does not run and shops close for prayers.

Malaysian travellers who send these questions early usually get clearer quotes and fewer surprises on arrival. The answers also help you compare Huraa fairly against neighbouring islands on the same ferry route.

Weather and timing

The northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, brings drier, calmer weather and the best snorkelling visibility. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, is wetter and windier but is also the main surf season on the North Male breaks near Huraa.

Malaysian school holidays and the December peak fill small guesthouses early. If you are travelling then, confirm your room and transfer together before booking flights.

Questions travellers ask

Is Huraa good for a Muslim family from Malaysia?
Huraa is a Muslim local island, so pork and alcohol are not sold and daily life follows prayer times. Families usually find it comfortable. Food is served by small guesthouse kitchens and local cafes, so ask your guesthouse about any specific requirements before you book. Plan for most shops closing on Friday around midday prayers.
Is there a resort near Huraa?
Yes. Several resorts sit in the same part of North Male Atoll, and guesthouses on Huraa arrange paid resort day trips. Travellers have reported about USD 90 to 150 per person for resorts such as Club Med Kani. This is how many local-island guests enjoy a resort pool or beach for a day.
How many nights should I spend on Huraa?
Three to four nights is enough for most people. That gives one snorkel or dolphin trip, one mangrove kayak session, a lazy beach day and a resort day pass if you want one. Surfers in season and divers working through a course often stay longer.
Can I walk around Huraa?
Yes. Huraa is small and flat, and everything from the harbour to the bikini beach is within walking distance. Guesthouses usually meet you at the jetty and carry luggage. Wear sandals that can get wet, since paths are sandy.
