How to choose a resort needing a seaplane transfer

A seaplane resort is worth it when you have enough nights, an arrival that lands in daylight and the budget for the transfer. If any one of those is missing, a speedboat resort is usually the better choice.

Step 1: does your flight land in time?

Seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset. To reach a seaplane resort the same day, plan to land in Male by about 15:30.

Travellers from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu or Kuching normally connect in KUL. Leave enough connection time, because a missed morning flight can mean a missed seaplane.

Step 2: is the transfer worth it for your stay length?

Shared seaplanes typically cost about USD 400 to 820 per adult return. That cost is fixed whether you stay 3 nights or 7, so longer stays spread it better.

Worked example at USD 610 per adult return (mid-point), two adults, at RM4.09:

On 3 nights, the seaplane can cost more per night than a beach villa at a mid-range resort. On 5 nights or more, it becomes a smaller share. Some packages bundle the seaplane, such as HolidayGoGoGo's Brennia Kottefaru honeymoon from RM4,799 per person including return seaplane, flights excluded (checked 11 October 2026).

Step 3: can you pack within the baggage limit?

Trans Maldivian allows 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand luggage per passenger. Excess costs USD 5 per kg plus taxes, and no bag may exceed 32 kg.

Infants under two fly free but have no baggage allowance. Families should pack nappies and baby gear within the adults' allowance, or budget for excess.

Surfboards and other oversized items cannot go on scheduled seaplanes and need a charter. Divers bringing their own gear should weigh it before leaving home.

Step 4: which operator and which atoll?

Trans Maldivian is the main seaplane operator. Manta Air is a second operator that also flies domestic routes, for example to Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll.

Some resorts in distant atolls use a domestic flight plus speedboat instead, typically about USD 350 to 520 per adult return. Domestic flights do not share the seaplane's daylight cut-off in the same way, so ask the resort which option it uses.

Choose a speedboat resort if you arrive on Batik Air, stay 3 nights or fewer, travel with a baby or have a tight budget. The money saved on the transfer often pays for a better room or an excursion.
