How to get to Male City from Male airport

You have landed at Velana and need to reach Male City, with luggage, possibly late at night.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

Take a taxi across the bridge for a regulated MVR 70 per car (Ministry of Transport, from May 2024), about 15 to 20 minutes, or the public ferry from the jetty opposite arrivals for a reported MVR 15 per person, cash only, about 15 minutes. The taxi is easier with luggage, children or a late Batik Air arrival. The ferry is the cheap choice for light travellers by day.

Getting there from Male airport

Male City is the closest island to the airport, and getting there is simple. You choose between a taxi across the bridge and the public ferry from the jetty outside arrivals.

This page compares both. For what Male is like and whether to visit, see the Male City guide, and for transfers across the country see the transfers hub.

Which option should you take?

Take the taxi if you have luggage, children or arrive after dark. Take the ferry if you are travelling light in daylight and want the cheapest ride.

Taking a taxi

Walk out of arrivals to the taxi rank. The regulated fare to Male is MVR 70 for a standard car, with about MVR 10 extra if you start at the domestic terminal.

At RM4.09 per USD and roughly USD 0.065 per rufiyaa, MVR 70 is about RM19 per car. Split between two, that is under RM10 each. Confirm the fare with the driver before loading bags.

Taking the public ferry

The ferry jetty is directly across from the arrivals hall. Look for the counter marked for Male ferries and buy a ticket in cash.

Reported fares are MVR 15 from 06:00 to midnight and MVR 20 in the early morning. Ferries are reported to leave about every 15 minutes. Commuter peaks can be crowded, and steps make heavy bags hard work.

Arriving on each KUL flight

  • AirAsia, about 09:50: either option works. The ferry is fine if you are light; a taxi saves effort.
  • Malaysia Airlines, about 11:25: the same, though midday heat makes the taxi more comfortable.
  • Batik Air, about 21:55: take a taxi or a hotel pickup. The ferry may still be running, but a taxi avoids waiting with luggage late at night.

Going back to the airport

Allow extra time in the morning rush and around Friday midday prayers. Ask your hotel to book a taxi the night before an early flight, and aim to reach the airport at least three hours before an international departure.

When to skip Male altogether

If your onward island or resort transfer leaves from the airport, you do not need to go into Male at all. Speedboats and seaplanes depart from the airport island. A first night in Hulhumale is closer and often calmer with family.

A simple cost check

Here is the arithmetic for two adults, one way, using the sources above and RM4.09 per USD with about USD 0.065 per rufiyaa.

TaxiMVR 70 per carMVR 70RM19
Ferry, daytimeMVR 15 per personMVR 30RM8
Ferry, early morningMVR 20 per personMVR 40RM11

The saving from the ferry is small for a couple and shrinks further for a family of four sharing a taxi. For most Malaysians, comfort decides, not cost.

Checklist before you leave arrivals

  • Withdraw a small amount of rufiyaa at an airport ATM if you plan to take the ferry.
  • Buy a local SIM at the airport, so you can message your hotel.
  • Note your hotel's address and phone number, since Male streets are narrow and similar.
  • Confirm whether your hotel offers a pickup, especially for a night arrival.
  • File the free IMUGA declaration before you fly, within 96 hours of arrival.

Travelling with family or older parents

For families, the taxi is the calmer choice. You load bags once at the kerb, the children stay seated and the ride is short. Ask for a larger car if you have more than four people or several big suitcases, and confirm the fare for that vehicle before you set off.

Older travellers may find the ferry steps and the busy Male jetty tiring, especially in the midday heat. A hotel pickup removes the need to find the taxi rank at all, which helps after a long flight from Malaysia.

If you are only going to Male for a few hours of sightseeing, consider leaving large bags at your hotel in Hulhumale or arranging storage before you go. Walking Male's narrow streets with suitcases is hard work, and most sights are close to the jetties.

Notes on prices and sources

The taxi fare comes from the Ministry of Transport schedule reported in May 2024. The ferry fare and hours come from travel guides checked on 12 October 2026, not from an official timetable. Fares can change, so treat the ferry figures as a guide and carry a little extra cash.

Questions travellers ask

Can I pay the ferry in ringgit or by card?
No. The ferry is reported as cash only, in rufiyaa or US dollars. Paying about USD 1 is usually accepted, but rufiyaa is cheaper. Withdraw a small amount at an airport ATM before walking to the jetty, and keep small notes for the fare.
Is the ferry suitable with big suitcases?
It is possible but awkward. The boats are busy commuter ferries with steps on and off, and space for luggage is limited at peak times. Families with large cases, older parents or toddlers will find a taxi much easier for the small price difference.
Do taxis in Male use meters?
Airport-to-Male fares are set by the Ministry of Transport rather than metered. The May 2024 fare is MVR 70 for a standard car. Confirm the fare with the driver before loading bags, and ask your hotel what to expect if you arrive very late.
Can my hotel arrange the transfer?
Many Male hotels offer an airport pickup, sometimes for a fee. It is worth asking when you book, especially for a night arrival, since a driver waiting with your name saves time at a busy arrivals hall.
