How to get to Hulhumale from Male airport

You land at Velana with luggage and want the simplest way to your Hulhumale hotel.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Take a taxi from the rank outside arrivals. It takes about 10 minutes and the official fare is MVR 80 to Hulhumale Phase 1 or MVR 85 to Phase 2 for a normal car (Ministry of Transport, from 20 May 2024), roughly USD 5.20 to 5.50. RTL buses are cheaper at a reported MVR 10 to 15 but suit light luggage, and many hotels offer pickup, sometimes free.

The short answer: walk out of arrivals, take a taxi and pay the official fare. Hulhumale is joined to the airport by road and the ride takes about 10 minutes.

This page covers each option, the fares that apply, and what to plan for night and Friday arrivals. For what the island is like, see the Hulhumale island guide. For transfers to resorts and other islands, read the airport transfers guide.

Taxi fares are the Ministry of Transport rates that took effect on 20 May 2024, as reported by Edition.mv. Bus fares come from travel guides; check the current fare on the RTL app or website. All figures checked 12 October 2026.

In ringgit, MVR 80 is about USD 5.20, roughly RM21 at RM4.09 per USD. Split between two people, the taxi costs little more than the bus.

Taking a taxi

Taxis queue outside the arrivals hall. Tell the driver which phase your hotel is in, since the fare differs by MVR 5.

Agree the fare before you load your bags. Local reports have described drivers asking for far more than the official rate, so quoting the figure up front helps. If you are picked up at the domestic terminal, an extra charge of up to MVR 10 may apply.

Carry some rufiyaa. Drivers may accept US dollars, but change can be awkward.

Taking the bus

RTL runs public buses between the airport and Hulhumale. Travel guides report:

  • a route to southern Hulhumale at about MVR 10, every 30 minutes
  • a route to northern Hulhumale at about MVR 15, every 30 minutes, reported to run around the clock
  • payment by cash, contactless card or the RTL app

Buses stop at the main terminal area, not the seaplane terminal, and pause around Friday midday prayers. Big suitcases can be awkward on a standard city bus.

Hotel pickup

Many Hulhumale hotels and guesthouses meet guests at arrivals. It costs more than the bus but removes all guesswork, which matters after a long day.

Before you fly, confirm in writing:

  1. Whether pickup is free or charged, and the price.
  2. Where the driver waits and what the name sign says.
  3. What happens if your flight is delayed.
  4. A WhatsApp number to message after landing.

Arriving at night

The Batik Air flight from KUL lands at about 21:55. At that hour, seaplanes have stopped and most shared speedboats have gone, so Hulhumale is the natural first stop.

Pre-book your hotel pickup or use the taxi rank. Immigration and baggage can take a while, so tell your hotel the scheduled landing time and let them track the flight.

Getting back to the airport

Allow about 10 minutes for the drive plus a buffer for check-in. For a morning flight home, ask your hotel to book a taxi the night before, or use its shuttle.

Friday and holiday notes

Buses and public ferries pause around Friday midday prayers. Taxis keep running, so a taxi or hotel pickup is the safer plan on a Friday around midday.

During Ramadan, daytime services can be quieter, though airport transport continues.

Moving on from Hulhumale to your island

The next morning, most onward transfers start back at the airport. Seaplanes leave from their own terminal beside the main airport, domestic flights from the domestic terminal, and many shared speedboats from the airport jetty or from Male.

Ask your resort or guesthouse where to meet and at what time, then book the taxi to match. Allow extra time with children and luggage, since the airport roads can be busy in the morning.

If your boat leaves from Male rather than the airport, the taxi fare to Male is MVR 70 for a normal car on the same Ministry of Transport schedule.

Next steps

Once you know how you will get there, choose where to sleep with the Hulhumale accommodation guide, and work out the full cost of a night or two with what a Hulhumale stay costs.

Questions travellers ask

Can I pay the taxi in US dollars or by card?
Many drivers accept US dollars, but the fixed fare is set in rufiyaa, so you may get change in MVR at a poor rate. Withdraw a little rufiyaa at the airport ATM or exchange counter. Taxi apps used in the Maldives offer fixed pricing, though you may need a local number to use them.
What if a driver asks for more than the official fare?
Local press has reported drivers asking far more than the set fare. Say the official figure, MVR 80 to Phase 1 or MVR 85 to Phase 2, before you get in. If you arranged a hotel pickup, look for your name sign so you avoid the discussion altogether.
Are buses running after midnight?
One route between the airport and northern Hulhumale is reported to run around the clock, but schedules change. After a Batik Air arrival at about 21:55, a pre-booked hotel pickup or a taxi is more reliable, especially with children and luggage.
Is there a ferry from the airport to Hulhumale?
No ferry is needed. Hulhumale is connected to the airport island by road. Ferries are used between Hulhumale and Male, or from the airport jetty to other islands, not for this short hop.
