How to get to Rasdhoo from Male airport

You are planning a dive or reef trip on Rasdhoo and need to fit the boat around your flight from Malaysia.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

The usual route is a shared speedboat from Male, about 1 to 1.5 hours and reported at USD 30 to 50 per person each way in 2025 to 2026 listings. A 2026 island guide reports departures around 10:30 and 16:00 and asks for 48 hours' notice. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines morning arrivals connect the same day; the Batik Air evening arrival does not.

Getting there from Male airport

  • public ferry: about 3 to 3.5 hoursA few US dollars per person; exact fare not confirmed from an official source

Rasdhoo is close enough to Male to reach on the day you land, if your flight arrives in the morning. The shared speedboat is the route almost everyone uses.

This page sets out the options, the reported times and fares, and which flights from Malaysia connect. For the island itself, see the Rasdhoo island guide. For North Ari transfers in general, read getting to Alifu Alifu from Male airport.

Your options compared

Most travellers should book the shared speedboat. The ferry only makes sense with flexible dates, and a charter only for groups or late arrivals.

These figures come from booking sites and island guides dated 2025 to 2026, not an official timetable. Confirm with your guesthouse before you book flights.

The shared speedboat in detail

A 2026 island guide reports departures from Male around 10:30 and 16:00, with slightly different times on Fridays. It names Nevi, Coral Speed and Atoll Transfer among the operators.

Ferryscanner, updated in January 2026, lists the first boat from Rasdhoo at about 07:30 and the last at about 13:30. 12Go listings show journey times of a little over an hour.

Fares differ by source, from about USD 30 to 50 per person one way, with some booking sites higher. Book at least 48 hours ahead through your guesthouse, which usually meets you at the Rasdhoo harbour.

Which flights from Malaysia connect?

Morning arrivals reach Rasdhoo the same day. The late evening arrival needs a night near the airport.

Flight from KULLands Male (local time)Same-day boat?
AirAsiaAbout 09:50Yes, possibly the late-morning boat, otherwise 16:00
Malaysia AirlinesAbout 11:25Yes, the 16:00 boat
Batik AirAbout 21:55No, stay in Hulhumale and take the next morning's boat

Check your arrival day against the boat days your guesthouse gives you. The flight arrival and transfer buffer planner helps you test your own times.

The public ferry

A public ferry runs between Male and Rasdhoo a few days a week and takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. Sources disagree on which days it runs, so no timetable is given here.

It is cheap, a few US dollars per person, but you buy tickets on the day and fares are usually paid in cash. Use it only if your dates are flexible and you are comfortable with a long, slow crossing.

Leaving Rasdhoo for your flight home

Return boats are reported from about 07:30, with the last at about 13:30. Allow at least three hours between landing at the airport and your flight.

  • AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines flights home leave around midday to early afternoon, so take the first boat.
  • The Batik Air flight leaves late at night, so a later boat works.
  • Divers must also keep 24 hours dive-free before flying, so plan the last dive two days before departure if the boat is early.

A worked example for two divers

Two certified divers fly AirAsia, landing at about 09:50. They take the 16:00 boat, check in before sunset and dive the next three mornings.

Their final full day is a beach and snorkel day. On departure morning they take the 07:30 boat for a midday flight. The return speedboat costs USD 40 x 2 people x 2 ways = USD 160, or about RM 654 at RM 4.09, using the middle of the reported range.

Questions to send your guesthouse

Copy and adapt this before you pay a deposit:

  • Which shared speedboat times run on our arrival and departure dates, including any Friday?
  • Which operator do you use, and what is the fare per person one way?
  • Where at the airport do we meet the boat, and who meets us at Rasdhoo harbour?
  • If our flight is delayed past the last boat, what do you suggest, and what would a charter cost per boat?
  • How much dive gear can we bring on the boat without an extra charge?

Keep the written answers, because schedules change and you may need them on the day.

Who this route suits, and when to rethink

The route suits divers and snorkellers with morning flights and 4 nights or more. Families with young children and older travellers should choose calm-season dates, about December to April.

If your flight lands late or you have only 2 nights, an island closer to Male gives you more beach time. For splitting the trip with a second island, see moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas or moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo.

Questions travellers ask

Why do Rasdhoo speedboat prices vary so much?
Several operators run the route and booking sites add their own margin, so listings in 2025 and 2026 range from about USD 30 to 60 per person. Guesthouses often book at the operator's price and add it to your bill. Ask for the fare per person, one way, and whether luggage is included.
Can I fly to Rasdhoo?
Rasdhoo has no airport. Seaplanes serve nearby resorts, and one guesthouse page quotes seaplane seats, but these are expensive and depend on resort flights. For most guesthouse visitors the shared speedboat is the realistic choice. Ask your guesthouse if a seaplane seat is possible and what it costs.
What if the speedboat is cancelled because of weather?
Boats can be cancelled in rough seas, especially between about May and November. Keep at least one spare night before your flight home, and ask your guesthouse what happens if the boat does not run. Our guide to cancelled island boats explains the usual options.
Can I go from Rasdhoo to another island instead of back to Male?
Yes. Boats link Rasdhoo with Ukulhas and Thoddoo, both popular second islands. Public boats run only on certain days, so check with both guesthouses before fixing your nights. Our pages on moving between these islands cover the options.
