Getting to Alifu Alifu (North Ari) from Male airport: options and limitations

You are heading to a North Ari guesthouse or resort and want the transfer that matches your flight and budget.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026Prices researched 12 October 20264 min

Quick answer

North Ari is reached by speedboat, seaplane or public ferry. Shared speedboats take under an hour to Rasdhoo and about 50 to 90 minutes to Ukulhas, at about USD 50 one way per older guides, while Kuramathi is about 20 to 25 minutes by seaplane or 75 to 90 minutes by speedboat. Public ferries are cheap but slow and run only on some days.

North Ari has no airport, so it is a boat or seaplane trip. Here are the options side by side.

Shared speedboats to the guesthouse islands

Most guesthouse guests use shared speedboats from Male or the airport. Wikivoyage lists Male to Ukulhas at USD 50 one way (March 2024), about RM205 at RM4.09, and fast boats to Rasdhoo taking under an hour at a similar fare.

For two adults return to Ukulhas, that is 2 x 2 x USD 50 = USD 200, about RM818. Schedules are irregular and change by season, so treat these as planning figures and get a confirmed price from your guesthouse.

Seaplane and speedboat to Kuramathi

Kuramathi sits on Rasdhoo Atoll beside the local island of Rasdhoo. Listings give about 20 to 25 minutes by seaplane or 75 to 90 minutes by speedboat, with speedboats leaving the airport at set times.

The property information we checked says seaplanes operate between about 06:00 and 15:30, and that the resort books seaplanes by default unless you send flight details at least 72 hours ahead. Only one transfer mode can be booked per round trip. Excess baggage over 20 kg per person may be charged on the seaplane.

Public ferries

Public ferries from Male serve Rasdhoo, Ukulhas and Thoddoo on set days. Wikivoyage describes a Male to Rasdhoo ferry of about 3 hours on a few days a week.

We could not reach an official MTCC timetable, so days, times and fares here are planning guides only. The ferry suits long-stay travellers with time to spare, not a 4-night holiday.

Moving between North Ari islands

Rasdhoo, Ukulhas and Thoddoo are close together, so many travellers split their stay. Older guides put Rasdhoo to Ukulhas at about 20 minutes by speedboat, and describe a public boat from Rasdhoo to Thoddoo on some days.

For details, read moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas and moving between Thoddoo and Rasdhoo.

Which option fits your Malaysian flight?

  • AirAsia, lands about 09:50: shared speedboats and seaplanes both work the same day.
  • Malaysia Airlines, lands about 11:25: seaplane is fine; check that a shared speedboat still runs in the afternoon.
  • Batik Air, lands about 21:55: plan a night in Hulhumale. Shared boats and seaplanes will have finished, and a private night crossing of the channel is costly and less comfortable.

On departure, allow a generous buffer. Book a boat that reaches the airport at least three hours before your flight.

When a night near Male is the safer plan

North Ari's shared boats and seaplanes finish in the afternoon, so a late landing usually means a night in Hulhumale. That is not wasted time: Hulhumale has hotels of every level and is minutes from the airport.

Plan a Hulhumale night if your flight lands after about 15:00, if you travel on a Friday when fewer boats run, or if you have young children and want to rest before the crossing. Book a morning boat for the next day and ask your guesthouse to confirm it the evening before.

On the way home, the same logic works in reverse. If your flight leaves early in the morning, move to Hulhumale the afternoon before rather than risking an early crossing in bad weather.

Who each option suits

Shared speedboats suit guesthouse guests on morning flights. The seaplane suits Kuramathi guests who want the shortest, most scenic transfer, and the resort speedboat suits those with heavy luggage or a later landing.

If any open-water crossing worries you, Kaafu islands are closer; compare in the Kaafu transfer guide. To weigh a guesthouse against a resort in North Ari, read North Ari local island versus resort.

Questions travellers ask

Which shared speedboat operator should I use?
Your guesthouse is the best guide. Wikivoyage notes that Ukulhas speedboats are run by a third party with tickets sold by Atoll Transfer, and that schedules are somewhat irregular. Ask your guesthouse to book, give your flight number, and get the departure time and meeting point in writing.
Why do sources give different times to Ukulhas?
Shared boats sometimes stop at other islands, and sea conditions change the speed. Wikivoyage lists about 50 minutes, while a travel blog gives about 90 minutes. Plan on the longer figure, especially in the southwest monsoon, and keep a buffer before any onward connection.
Can I take a seaplane to Ukulhas?
Older guides say there is no seaplane platform at Ukulhas, and suggest flying to nearby Rasdhoo instead. For most guesthouse guests, the shared speedboat is simpler and much cheaper. Resort guests at Kuramathi usually fly by seaplane unless they book the speedboat.
Is the North Ari crossing rough?
The open channel between Male Atoll and Ari can be choppy, especially from May to November. Take seasickness medication if you need it and sit near the back. Book with a reputable operator; in 2022 a Male to Ukulhas speedboat overturned, which is a reminder to check boat and weather conditions.
