Rasdhoo is the local island that divers talk about. It sits on the rim of its own small atoll at the edge of North Ari, with deep channels close by and enough dive centres to choose from.

This page covers what the island is like, who it suits and how a stay works. For a wider view of the atoll, see the Alifu Alifu (North Ari) atoll guide, or browse the island directory.

What kind of island is Rasdhoo?

Rasdhoo is an inhabited local island and the administrative capital of Alifu Alifu Atoll. Wikivoyage puts the population at about 850, and the island is small enough to cross on foot in minutes.

Geographically it lies on Rasdhoo Atoll, a small ring of reef just northeast of the main Ari atoll. That position puts open-ocean channels right on the doorstep, which is why the diving is so well known.

The village has a harbour, a mosque, a Bank of Maldives branch, a health centre, souvenir and grocery shops and a handful of cafes. Two resort islands sit nearby on the same reef system.

The Maafushi versus Rasdhoo comparison helps if you are torn between an easy first trip and a dive-led one.

Island customs and the bikini beach

Rasdhoo is a Muslim community, so cover shoulders and knees in the village and keep swimwear for the designated bikini beach. Some businesses close or slow down around Friday prayers, from late morning to early afternoon.

The bikini beach is small, with soft sand, calm water and free sun loungers, and a 2026 island guide reports toilets and showers nearby. Wikivoyage adds that the reef near it has suffered from heavy use, so snorkel gently. See what a bikini beach is for the general rules.

How a stay on Rasdhoo works

Most visitors fly in on a morning flight from KUL and take an afternoon shared speedboat, arriving before dark. Mornings are for diving or a snorkel trip, often leaving early to catch the best conditions.

Afternoons are slower: the beach, a cafe, or a second trip to a sandbank or Madivaru, the uninhabited islet across the lagoon. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at your guesthouse or a cafe near the harbour.

Plan your diving so the last 24 hours before your flight are dive-free. That usually means your final day is a beach or village day. See what to do on Rasdhoo for the dive sites and trips.

Getting there in brief

Shared speedboats take about 1 to 1.5 hours and are reported at about USD 30 to 50 per person each way. A 2026 island guide reports Male departures around 10:30 and 16:00, and asks guests to book at least 48 hours ahead.

A slow public ferry runs a few days a week, and boats link Rasdhoo with Ukulhas and Thoddoo. The details are on how to get to Rasdhoo from Male airport.

Money, health and services

Rasdhoo is easier for cash than many small islands. A 2026 guide reports a 24-hour Bank of Maldives ATM that accepts international cards, with a reported limit of MVR 10,000 and a fee of about MVR 100 per withdrawal.

The same guide reports a health centre with a resident doctor and a small pharmacy, with serious cases sent to Male. There is no decompression chamber on Rasdhoo; the nearest confirmed chamber is at ADK Hospital in Male.

Guesthouses charge Green Tax of USD 6 per guest per night, plus 10% service and 17% Tourism GST on the room. The Rasdhoo cost guide shows the arithmetic.

Practical checklist before you go

  • Entry: Malaysians get a free visa on arrival with a passport valid at least 1 month beyond the stay, a return ticket and a confirmed booking at a registered property.
  • IMUGA: file the free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival, for every traveller including infants.
  • Dive papers: bring your certification card and logbook, and check your insurance covers diving.
  • Cash: some US dollars in small notes as a backup to the ATM.
  • Connectivity: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo both offer 4G, according to guides; buy a SIM at the airport.
  • Season: about December to April is usually drier, with calmer crossings.

Honeymooners, families and older travellers

Honeymooners who dive often love Rasdhoo. Couples who want long empty beaches may prefer to split the stay with Ukulhas; see moving between Rasdhoo and Ukulhas.

Families find the village easy to manage, with an ATM and health centre on hand. Older travellers should pick calm-season dates for the crossing and ask for a ground-floor room.

When a different choice works better

Choose Maafushi for a short first trip with many non-diving excursions. Choose Ukulhas or Thoddoo if a long beach matters more than diving, and a resort if you want privacy and full service.

Choose Rasdhoo when the reef is the reason for your trip and you have at least 4 nights. For where to stay, see Rasdhoo guesthouses and how to choose.

Questions travellers ask

Are hammerheads guaranteed at Rasdhoo?
No. Scalloped hammerheads are seen on early-morning dives at Rasdhoo Madivaru, often called Hammerhead Point, but sightings depend on conditions and the sharks are usually deep. The dive suits experienced, certified divers. Ask the dive centre how often it has seen them recently and how deep the dive goes.
Is Rasdhoo good if I do not dive?
Yes, for a few nights. Snorkel trips visit reefs, sandbanks and a manta area in season, and the bikini beach has calm water. The beach is small, though, so travellers who mainly want sand and sea often prefer Ukulhas or Thoddoo, both reachable from Rasdhoo.
Is food on Rasdhoo halal?
Rasdhoo is a Muslim island with no alcohol or pork on sale, so cafe and guesthouse food generally follows local Muslim norms. Sandbank trips sometimes become informal drinking spots for other tourists. If you need certified halal food, ask your guesthouse what it can confirm in writing.
Can I use my Malaysian card at the Rasdhoo ATM?
A 2026 island guide reports one Bank of Maldives ATM that accepts international cards and dispenses rufiyaa, with a fee of about MVR 100 per withdrawal. Tell your bank you are travelling, carry some US dollars as a backup and expect many cafes to be cash only.
