Hulhumale guesthouses and hotels: how to choose one

There are dozens of Hulhumale properties on booking sites and you need one that fits your flight times.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 3 min

Quick answer

Choose by flight time first, then location. For a single transit night, a registered guesthouse in Phase 1 near the beach with free or cheap airport pickup and early breakfast suits most Malaysians. Rooms are reported at about USD 40 to 200 per night before tax (2026), and properties with 50 rooms or fewer charge USD 6 Green Tax per person per night. Confirm pickup, taxes and breakfast hours in writing.

Good for

  • transit nights
  • families
  • late arrivals

Worth knowing

  • Urban island, not a typical island holiday
  • Swimwear only in the designated tourist beach area; cover up elsewhere
  • ATMs (Bank of Maldives, SBI) and supermarkets available

Getting there from Male airport

  • taxi: about 10 minutesRegulated fare MVR 80 to Phase 1 and MVR 85 to Phase 2 for cars under 6 seats; MVR 125 and 130 for 7 to 10 seats (Ministry of Transport, from 20 May 2024)
  • public bus: about 10 to 25 minutesReported MVR 10 to 15 per person; confirm on rtl.mv
  • guesthouse or hotel pickup: about 10 minutesOften free or a small fee; confirm with the property

The right Hulhumale property depends on when you land or fly out, not on how many stars it has. Get the timing right and almost any clean, registered guesthouse will do for a night.

This page gives a decision rule, a comparison of property types and a checklist to send before you pay. For the island overview, read the Hulhumale island guide.

Types of places to stay

Hulhumale has three broad types.

  • Small guesthouses: a few to a few dozen rooms, often with breakfast, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and airport pickup included. Most charge the lower USD 6 Green Tax.
  • Mid-size city hotels: more rooms, a restaurant and sometimes a rooftop pool. Some charge USD 12 Green Tax if they have more than 50 rooms.
  • Upscale hotels: business-style properties such as Hotel Jen, with more facilities and higher rates.

Named properties travel guides mention include Hotel Jen, Beach Arena Inn, Ocean Grand, Hulhumale Inn and Planktons Beach. We list them as examples to look up, not recommendations, since we have not reviewed them.

Phase 1 or Phase 2?

Phase 1 is the original part of Hulhumale, along the beach, with most cafes and guesthouses. It suits most travellers.

Phase 2 is newer and closer to the bridge. The taxi fare from the airport is MVR 85 compared with MVR 80 for Phase 1 (Ministry of Transport, from 20 May 2024). Choose it if a particular property or price suits you.

What does a night cost?

Rooms are reported at about USD 40 to 200 per room per night before tax in a 2026 guide. On top, add 10% service charge and 17% Tourism GST, about 28.7% together, and Green Tax.

Example for a couple, one night, room USD 70 before tax: 70 × 1.287 = USD 90, plus Green Tax 6 × 2 = USD 12, total USD 102, about RM417 at RM4.09. The USD 70 room is an assumption within the reported range.

Checklist to send before you book

Copy these questions into an email or WhatsApp to the property:

  1. Is the property a registered tourist facility?
  2. Is the quoted price per room, and does it include service charge, TGST and Green Tax?
  3. Is airport pickup included, and where will the driver wait?
  4. What time is breakfast, and can you prepare a packed breakfast for an early flight?
  5. Is reception open 24 hours for late arrivals?
  6. How far is the property from the designated swimwear beach?
  7. Can you store luggage after check-out, or offer late check-out?
  8. For families: do you have family rooms, cots or connecting rooms?

Keep the replies with your booking confirmation for immigration.

Who should choose what

  • Budget solo travellers and backpackers: a simple guesthouse with breakfast and bus access.
  • Couples: a beach-side Phase 1 guesthouse for an evening walk.
  • Families: a family room with pickup; avoid tight walk-up stairs with prams.
  • Older travellers: a property with a lift and pickup, and a quiet room away from the main road.
  • Honeymooners on the last night: an upscale hotel is a reasonable treat before the flight home.

Getting to your property

Most travellers take a 10-minute taxi or a hotel pickup. The full guide to fares and night arrivals is how to get to Hulhumale from Male airport.

Rates vary by date and property, so confirm the total price when you book.

Questions travellers ask

Phase 1 or Phase 2, which is better?
Phase 1 is the older side with the beach, promenade and most guesthouses and cafes, which suits most short stays. Phase 2 is newer and closer to the bridge, with a slightly higher taxi fare of MVR 85 against MVR 80. Choose Phase 1 for atmosphere and Phase 2 only if a specific property suits you better.
Why does the price at check-in differ from the booking site?
Some listings show the room rate without the 10% service charge, 17% Tourism GST or Green Tax, which are then added at the property. Green Tax in particular is often collected on arrival. Ask for a total price including all taxes before you pay a deposit.
Do I need a registered property for immigration?
Yes. Maldives Immigration requires a confirmed booking at a registered tourist facility. Well-known booking sites list registered properties, but private apartments and informal rentals may not qualify. If unsure, ask the property for its tourism registration and keep the confirmation on your phone.
Can I book a guesthouse just for a few hours before a flight?
Some properties offer day rooms or late check-out, which is useful before an evening flight such as Batik Air's departure. It is not universal, so ask directly. Otherwise, many hotels store luggage after check-out so you can spend the day on the beach.
