What to do on Hulhumale: beach, swimming and day trips

You have a free morning or afternoon near the airport and want to use it well.

Last reviewed 12 October 2026 · 4 min

Quick answer

Hulhumale's main draws are its long public beach and promenade, a designated swimwear area and easy trips out by boat. There is no notable house reef off the main beach, so snorkelling means a boat trip; travel guides report sandbank or island-hopping tours at about USD 75 to 165 per person and fun dives at about USD 55 to 65. A cheap bus or ferry into Male and the central park fill the rest.

Hulhumale is not a reef island, so the best use of a spare day is the beach for a swim and a boat trip for the snorkelling. Both are easy to arrange the same day.

Here is what you can do, where swimwear is allowed and what trips reportedly cost. For the island overview, see the Hulhumale island guide.

The beach: where can you swim?

Hulhumale has a long sandy beach facing the lagoon, with a promenade, trees and cafes behind it. It is busy with local families in the evening.

Swimwear is allowed only in the designated tourist area. Travel guides place the main swimwear beach on the east side near the airport bridge, though descriptions differ. Hotel guests may also wear swimwear on private hotel beach areas. Everywhere else, cover shoulders and knees.

The Ministry of Tourism signed an agreement with HDC to build a dedicated tourist beach in Phase 1 with changing rooms, lockers and a lifeguard hut. We could not confirm whether it is open, so ask your hotel which stretch to use.

Swimming tips:

  • Go in the morning when the sun is gentler and the water calmer.
  • Avoid about 11:00 to 15:00 for strong UV.
  • Expect rougher water during the southwest monsoon, about May to November.

Is there snorkelling off the beach?

Not really. Guides note there is no notable house reef off the main beach, so you will mostly see sand.

For coral and fish, book a half-day snorkel or island-hopping trip. Operators collect you from the Hulhumale jetty and supply masks and buoyancy aids.

Before you pay, ask for the operator's name, what is included (gear, drinks, lunch), the boat type and the cancellation policy if weather turns.

Easy things on the island itself

You do not need to book anything to enjoy Hulhumale for a few hours.

  • Promenade walk: the beachfront path is lively at sunset, when local families come out.
  • Central park: shaded green space with play areas, good for children after a long flight.
  • Cafes: local short eats (hedhikaa) and juices cost a few dollars, and there is no alcohol or pork.
  • Bicycle rental: reported in travel guides, useful for covering the flat, planned streets.

Day trip into Male

Male is a short bus or taxi ride over the bridge, or a public ferry from Hulhumale. It suits a half-day visit to the markets, the waterfront and local cafes, alone or on a guided walking tour.

Mosques expect modest dress, and some close to visitors around prayer times. Fridays are quietest around midday.

Ideas by traveller type

  • Families: a calm morning swim, the central park and a short snorkel trip with buoyancy aids.
  • Honeymooners: a sunset walk on the promenade and a sandbank trip with a picnic.
  • Older travellers: a Male walking tour and a slow lunch rather than a long boat day.
  • Divers: one or two dives with a local dive centre before or after a liveaboard or island trip. Do not dive within 24 hours of your flight home.
  • Budget travellers: the beach, a bus to Male and cafe meals cost very little.

Practical tips

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest; the sun is strong.
  • Carry some rufiyaa for buses and ferries.
  • No alcohol on Hulhumale outside licensed tourist facilities.
  • Keep valuables in the hotel and do not leave bags on the beach.

Is a spare day better spent elsewhere?

If you have a whole day, a nearby local island such as Maafushi offers a bikini beach, snorkelling trips and a village feel. Staying on Hulhumale makes most sense when you need to be close to the airport.

Questions travellers ask

Can I wear a bikini on Hulhumale beach?
Only in the designated swimwear area, which travel guides place on the east side near the bridge, and on private hotel beaches for guests. Elsewhere, cover shoulders and knees, including on the walk to and from the beach. A tourist beach in Phase 1 has been agreed by the Tourism Ministry and HDC, so ask your hotel for the current spot.
Is Hulhumale beach safe for children?
The beach is generally calm in the dry season, but there is no guarantee of lifeguards, and the monsoon can bring rougher seas. Swim in the mornings, stay close to young children and avoid the strong midday sun between about 11:00 and 15:00. Ask locals where people usually swim.
Can I visit a resort for the day from Hulhumale?
Yes. Some resorts near Male sell day passes, reported at about USD 100 to 200 per person including transfer and some meals. It suits travellers on a local-island or transit trip who want one taste of resort life. Confirm what the pass includes, the boat time and whether alcohol is extra.
Is there anything to do on a Friday?
The beach and promenade stay open, but public buses and ferries pause around midday prayers and many shops close for a few hours. Plan a morning swim, a long lunch at your hotel and a boat trip or Male visit in the late afternoon.
